Not as ST coach. Jets extended their current ST coach.

I was about to post the same. That will certainly slow down their rebuild over there. By the time we can build our own team back up, the Jets won't have a head start at least.

Only thing that scares me is the jets have a boatload if money for free agency. If they hit it right they can have a very potent team quickly

The Jets situation is kind of weird. I don't know how many other clubs won't let their head coach hire their own staff. It's the opposite of what we are doing here where Grier and I am assuming Flores seem to be hiring guys they have a rapport with. Personally, I like the approach we are taking. We have all had jobs where the boss hires someone we have to work with, but we really don't want to. It sucks after a while because we are not really a team, but just a group of individuals. Of course, if their philosophy keeps them a sorry *** team, then I am all for it. Time will tell who has the better approach.

Well, its not a bad idea to have a veteran coach as another set of eyes and ears for a young rookie. Caldwell has spent a grand total of one and a half years in the NFL as an OC, and it went really badly. I'd like someone else as the OC, but I'm cool with him being a veteran mentor.

Second Tweet there said it's possible Caldwell gets brought in as an assistant HC and not a coordinator.

They could. I fully expect them to be the #2 team in the division in 2019, and to be set up that way in 2020 also. From there, we'll see how it goes.

Anyone hearing any rumblings on who the coordinator candidates could be? My concern is that NE makes it to the SB and then Flores is months behind on trying to find a competent staff. First time HC looking for a staff to follow him in mid Feb. Hate to grab whats available and wind up realizing it didnt work then firing coordinators in the offseason and starting over again with a whole new system next year. Whoever the coach is, i just want them to have a good opportunity to be successful and not start off with one hand tied behind their back.

    Just my 2 cents

One mitigating factor might be (hope it is) that if Flores is as respected around the league as people say he is, if he reaches out, or has reached out previously (and he evidently had a list), then people might wait to hear from him/work with him.

Not any sort of guarantee, of course, but realistic I think.

Reports have Caldwell coming on board, could be as an OC, will have to wait to be sure, and Bret Bielema for DC.

IMO, both would be great hires .

My son is a Lions fan, so I have watched more Lions centric video than most NFL fans. I like Caldwell. He might have that 1000 yard, never blinking stare on the sidelines, but he connects with his players in a way that I would never have expected. He gets his guys to buy in.

I think he will do a great job helping Flores navigate being a first time head coach without trying to usurp authority. He will be an outstanding member of the staff.

It doesn't seem super uncommon. The Colts GM, for instance, hired their DC (Eberflus) and made him a condition of employment. It's worked out well for them. I think it's more when the GM wants to set a certain direction or scheme and tries to find someone who they think can implement that vision.

That said, it can be a bit of a dangerous thing to actually reject a HC's picks rather than pre-filling or back filling. It's what cost them Matt Rhule.

He was still taking HC interviews with multiple teams - I am sure he wants another crack at it. Serving on a high ranking role for a team probably will do more than sitting on the couch for him, so it's not surprising he wants to be active.

I am having a hard time keeping it all together. Is this what we think Grier and Flores have so far?

    Marvin Allen: Director of Scouting
Bret Bielema: Associative HC/ Advisor defense
Jim Caldwell: Associative HC/ Advisor offense
Patrick Graham: LB coach from Packers

After reading up a little bit on Caldwell, I am a little concerned that our offense will be too vanilla. Not that he is wrong, but he is big on execution rather than variety within the scheme. Remember when Gase dumbed down our offense? It didn't really give the defense much to prepare for. I could be wrong, but I would prefer a more modern approach were we change things up week to week depending on the defense we are facing. We could be negating the speed and YAC of Wilson and Grant if we are too predictable and don't use them correctly.

Note: Things could change. This was back when Caldwell was with the Lions. Flores might prefer a different approach (an offense like McDaniels, perhaps) and I am sure Caldwell could handle that if that is the direction we end up going. It's not like he doesn't know all the schemes and approaches out there. I think he was around when they formed the NFL. LOL!

Signing a DC is a joke the NFL is an offense driven league, what DC has had an impact? Patricia in det who was by far better than flores? whoever wants this guy should ask for Vance Joseph that worked out well for Denver he sucked in miami and sucked in denver. Miami continues to make the same mistakes and its honestly becoming unreal. i get that people think all these successful coaches will follow suit with their staff. Since Schotty, Parcels and andy reid had successful minions. My question is has belicheat? No its going to be the same thing. There is no reason why we have to go into tank mode there can be enough FA signing and fix OL and Defense needs in the draft to finally knock off the pats. The draft has not worked for us except maybe Minka we have repeatedly chosen horrible first picks for countless years. If i was Grier i would do everything i can do to sign foles, get antonio brown. Sign leveon bell or kareem hunt and i would get mccarthy its an easy fix. the defense is maybe just a good DC and maybe a few tweaks away from being really good the offense needs some "glue" McCarthy and foles and a legit #1 WR. who are all in relative to be available the hardest part will be trying to get anyone to want to come Miami just sad that people are more intrigued by the browns then they are by Miami. Here we go lets suck for draft picks then pick horrible people. spend a #1 on Tua and watch him get hurt like marriota and 10 years form now we are saying the same thing we have for 20.

Flores was a freakin LB coach 2 years ago, would you be willing to sign Joey porter to a Head coaching job? This guys has the cheater of all cheaters and tom brady the defense is micro managed by belicheat i dont see how this guy is even on the radar!!!!! oh he prolly wasnt just on MIAMI's.

Here is Rosses thinking, we will sign a patriots get all the patriots cheat codes they will teach us the patriot way and we will beat the pats once. How about make your own identity and use that identity to knock them off. you dont think belicheck will out coach this dude twice next yr. if belicheat and brady is stay coaching.

this is whole organization is literally the laughing stock of the NFL!!!!

Not that it holds any weight, but I've always felt you want a core of things you well and then you add in your weekly scheme for the opposition that week that will help open up your strengths.

Wish I could remember exactly who it was but I remember an interview with one of the Packers of old during Lombardi’s days in Green Bay. They used to run the sweep quite often. It was their bread and butter. Anyhow, during this interview he told the reporter he remembered one game he heard the defense calling out “they’re running the sweep” and he yelled right back to them, “that’s right, now try and stop us” which of course they didn’t.

Execution is everything!! You can have a vanilla offense but if you execute the play perfectly every time, it’s going to be successful.

Sometimes too much variety results in failed execution, confusion and plays backfiring on you. If our offense was so bland that we handed the ball off every time and it resulted in 5 to 6 yards per carry each and every time, I wouldn’t care one bit.

As I’ve gotten older, I love watching an offense grind and wear out a defense. Nothing like seeing them sucking wind and physically worn out.

Dolphins are adding Packers LB coach Patrick Graham--worked with Flores in New England previously.

Looks like we're definitely transitioning to a 3-4/hybrid defensive look with this hire. Could be better for Charles Harris, meanwhile McMillan + Baker would complement eachother well at ILB. And with reports that Wake, Quinn, and Branch are likely done, I wouldn't be surprised if Clay Matthews is brought in on a 1-year deal to help with the transition for the younger guys.

Love the 3-4, looking forward to it in Miami.

I'm not entirely convinced yet this is a full blown rebuild and not a simple retool.

There is actually a bit of young talent on the team. I mean, I agree we shouldn't be going after anyone top tier but I can see us bringing in a couple quality guys to round out the roster.

You need to relax dude...Give Flores and the people he's bringing in some time. And while we are in the off season I suggest you look into each one of these new hires. In depth and with some objectivity. I too am frustrated at this organization.
