I'm intrigued, is there anything to stop them from say doing the 4 hours and then all leaving the premises, crossing the street and getting some actual football stuff sorted? Like lets say all the linebackers met up for lunch with their coach and he went over the stuff he wanted them to get to grips with before the footballs came out in the team practices, and then the linebackers went off as a group and worked on it? Can the NFL smack you down for that as it's an obvious skirting of the rules?

In the CBA, the owners really, really need to just let the players do drugs in order to win back better practice time with the coaches.

I say let them do whatever they want. They are getting paid 100s of thousands or millions of $$$.
They want to roid up and rip each others heads off for my entertainment ...I'm in.
As long as they are making informed decisions and it's consensual.

As far as anything else goes, as long as no laws are broken it's nun ya biz.

And Marijuana is medicine so they should stop testing for that immediately. It's like Tylenol for reals.

I bolded the only "illegal" part of your idea- coaches cannot directly talk to players about anything football related. But if the coach went to lunch with the equipment manager, who happened to talk to the linebackers afterwards, then you're technically not breaking any rules if those linebackers went and practiced on their own.

Once upon a time, the Head Coach was God and players were subservient to them. There was no doubt who was in charge and as a player, you felt fortunate to be playing in the NFL. Granted, players salaries were garbage and many players had to take jobs in the offseason but once football season started, you did as the coach said, bottom line.

Then the players went on strike, wanting better pay, less stringent off season camps and the roles in teams are now reversed. Coach is no longer God and he can’t make me do this, that or the other because the union negotiated it.

I think the compromise is simple...you want these multimillion dollar contracts? Then whatever the coach says goes, bottom line. If you want to pout about it there are other players out there that are willing to put up with it for half of what you’re making.

If camps went back to being tough like they used to be, I guarantee you there wouldn’t be near as many injuries as we see today because these players would be toughened up during camp

Just my opinion, of course I could be wrong

Camps are easier because the NFL wanted to keep control of being judge juror and executioner of the players. They threw earlier practices do that they could put in their draconian justice system

I don't think that's true. If any coach was a god, it was Shula, and numerous players were out of control during his heyday.

Shula was actually scared of Jake Scott. Butch and Sundance were literal hellions in and out of the locker room.

I think our notion of NFL head coaches are shaped by our romanticized experiences with high school and maybe college coaches and Hollywood. In the NFL, it is and always has been different.

give them an extremely detailed list/presentation of the detriments they could have with performance enhancing and say it's up to you to take that risk. Make recreational depend on state law.

Do you watch games to see nearly inhuman people displaying talent? Or to see a bunch of college level scrubs that - unlike college - you have 0 attachment to?

I think the AAF is example enough of the emptiness of the threat.

Further, the money is paid to the players because of the obscene money the league brings in. If you aren't paying players, then owners just pocket the money and why the **** should we care for or encourage that?

...I was doing something. I just can't remember what it was. Oh that's right.

Lol, hey I've never done it myself. No appeal. But it seems to be hugely popular with the players, so giving up the ban seems worthwhile to me to get real football time back with coaches.

Was there anything in my post that said players SHOULDN'T get paid the salaries they receive? Anywhere in my post that said that? Anywhere at all? No, I said no such thing nor did I even hint that. If all you got out of my post was player salaries, then you missed the point completely.

The bottom line point is that Coach [Insert Name Here] is expected to field a championship contender team. Any team who doesn't have their eye on the Lombardi Trophy as the ultimate goal for their season doesn't deserve to play, but that in itself is another argument. The point however is you want your head coach to train and lead his team to that championship game. It's his job that's ultimately on the line, so the league in general holds the head coach responsible and yet at the same time, ties his hands behind his back. You can't do this, you can't do that and if you even try to, you're going to be severely disciplined.

With the rules that are in place today, not even Don Shula would be successful in his heyday of the early 70's because he wouldn't be able to do any of the things in today's offseason that he was able to do then.

Personally I think there is a compromise between the way it used to be and the way it is now.

Some developing players would probably love to get in extra time with the coaches. I'm not saying run them through walls, but like I said there has to be some middle ground.

Do you think that players dont go through enough currently? Or they dont listen to the coaches enough?

No, not necessarily on the not listening. I think that depends on the individual players. They may go through a bit less honestly but there were also times in the past they went through too much.

I'm talking more about the inability to communicate directly at times due to league off-season rules. It is there to pryotect the players in a sense but I feel like there might be a better way for players who actually want that communication without coaches abusing it.

Probably why they get paid a bit more than ol' Vince did my friend. They take the job voluntarily.

Good coaches adapt. Either Shula would have adapted (the way BB has) or he would have gotten fired. Regardless, it's not really relevant since he retired a good time ago.

Demanding more practice, player subservience, "toughness", griping about player pay (and you were) etc ... this is all very much "old man yells at cloud" type of stuff that just isn't going to happen. For many, (especially youth/advertising targets) the game is as interesting and exciting as it has ever been. Is my viewership changed positively by having some 1960's Steelers routine go down in the offseason? No. Things change. Sometimes it's good, sometimes not, but they change, they move forward. Railing against it can be cathartic, but ultimately it won't accomplish much other than make some whippersnapper like me roll their eyes for a few years until it's my turn to tell those damn kids to turn down their music.
