It came out today that: So now lots of fans and media pundits are asking the question, "What if we could land Wilson?" That includes for the Dolphins: Some numbers: So what say you Dolphins fans - would you take Wilson if we could get him - and how far would you go?
Nope not part of the process. We got two many holes to spend all our money on Wilson. Yes hes great but we would need to fill many other holes and depth before addressing that need IMHO. 130+ for a QB nope.. Ill pass at this time.
No way. He is on the down side of his career. He loses speed. He becomes useless. He is already a little slower. Jim mcmann had better numbers than r. Wilson in the superbowls they won. Defenses won for both of them. I want young talent.
I've been sick of Russell Wilson for years now, lol. Some of our posters have an obsession with him only recently eclipsed by Kyler Murray. He's never been a Dolphin and is very likely never going to be one. As such, the amount of time people here spend on him is really weird.
I live in shehack land. I can assure you Wilson would not play for Miami. Ever. LA or NY LA Chargers after Rivers retires next year, if Wilson doesn't get a new contract from Seattle. Giants same deal or he finishes his career in Seattle after signing a huge deal here. Which is going to happen. Nothing to see here, move along...
He's a very good QB but I agree it is weird. It's just because a couple people here really love him I guess.
I think it has a lot to do with QB play as being a hot topic. People gave Tannehill a pass for years because the line wasnt very good and other posters always brought up that Wilson, among others, didnt have great lines and was just fine. Then you would have the crowd that would jump in and defend their tannyhill by saying Wilson was overrated. Then that started a **** storm of arguments because that is ridiculous.
I'd trade the farm for this guy. He's an elite talent. I don't buy one bit that he's declined. more like the talent around him at Oline, WR and RB has fallen off a cliff. having said that, he's got no leverage in this situation unless he's planning on holding out. Seattle can franchise tag him for a couple more years after this season, would save them money doing so.
It's not really ridiculous IMO. Overrated doesnt mean bad. It means you fall short of the pedestal people put you on. Wilson is a very good QB but I would say compared to the hype he gets yes, he is overrated.
That’s because there are posts like above that don’t bother to give him the credit he deserves, I don’t engage anymore in debates about his game, not worth my time at this point.
We can debate this all day long, but ultimately his enshrinement in the NFL Hall of Fame will settle this ridiculous debate. Russell Wilson is a beast and has the track record as a QB that we've only dreamed of since 13 retired.
How exactly is someone who was 3rd in the NFL with 35 TD's and 2nd in the NFL in TD% on the down side of his career?
I mean we've had to spend this off season sorting out our cap situation because of overpaying players and now people are immediately down for paying 30 million a year for Wilson? I mean we give Russ 30 mill and we're probably not keeping Howard and Tunsil unless you want a good chunk of your cap space gone on 3 players. That's not me saying that I dislike Wilson or anything, it's just me wondering how trying to build a team from scratch is going to go if you're going to be paying huge amounts in both cap space and draft capital on one player.
That's the price of an above average QB in the NFL man. Jimmy G and Kirk Cousins are getting paid $28 million per year and they're nowhere near the level of Wilson. If we draft and above average or elite QB we're going to end up paying him $30million+. That's just the nature of the NFL.
He is 30. The age you start to lose speed. As i said. Without his speed he isnt going to be good as he was with speed. So you want to pay people according to the best year they ever had? No thanks. So after 30 you are on the downside of a pro football career normally.
You said he already is a little bit slower, given the fact that he is already a little bit slower and just threw a career high in TD's maybe his speed is not as vital as you suggest? No after 30 you are not on the downside of your career not at QB at least. Side note I picked an even amount of years in the 30s as in the 20s. Outside of Eli Mannings TD% and Big Bens y/a every single one of the QB's had better numbers across the board in their 30s. Manning Ages 22-29- 63.9% completion, 33189 yards, 244 TDs, 5.6 TD%, 130 INTs, 3.0 int%, 93.5 QB rating, 7.7 y/a Manning Ages 30-38-67% completion, 36502 yards, 286 TDs, 6.1 TD%, 104 INTs, 2.2 int%, 101.2 QB rating, 7.7 y/a Brady Ages 24-29-61.9% completion, 21558 yards, 147 TDs, 4.8 TD%, 78 INTs, 2.5 int%, 88.4 QB rating, 7.0 y/a Brady Ages 30-36-64.8% completion, 27585 yards, 212 TDs, 6.0 TD%, 56 INTs, 1.6 int%, 102.2 QB rating, 7.8 y/a Brees Ages 23-29-64.0% completion, 26037 yards, 167 TDs, 4.6 TD%, 99 INTs, 2.7 int%, 89.3 QB rating, 7.2 y/a Brees Ages 30-36-68.3% completion, 34645 yards, 260 TDs, 5.9 TD%, 106 INTs, 2.4 int%, 101.2 QB rating, 7.8 y/a Eli Manning Ages 24-29-58.6% completion, 21603 yards, 150 TDs, 4.8 TD%, 104 INTs, 3.3 int%, 81.8 QB rating, 6.9 y/a Eli Manning Ages 30-35-61.3% completion, 25568 yards, 164 TDs, 4.7 TD%, 102 INTs, 2.9 int%, 87.1 QB rating, 7.3 y/a Big Ben Ages 22-29-63.1% completion, 26579 yards, 165 TDs, 5.0 TD%, 100 INTs, 3.0 int%, 92.1 QB rating, 8.0 y/a Big Ben Ages 30-36-65.5% completion, 29615 yards, 198 Tds, 5.1 TD%, 90 INTs, 2.3 int%, 96.1 QB rating, 7.7 y/a
The Dolphins are expected to have $120mil in cap space come 2020. If I ran the Dolphins I'd do anything I could to get Wilson to sign with us.
While I agree over 30 isnt the end of a QB I'd like to point out those numbers are heavily weighted down by the first couple years of the QBs career where he is still developing and obviously most dont putnup their best numbers in that period. I'd be more interested in from say.... 26 to 33 and from 34 on maybe.
Does anyone know the rule on how much of that money we HAVE TO spend on 2019/2020? I mean, if we're going to be forced to throw an extra $60-70+ million at free agents and re-signings anyway, then there's no valid argument not to offer Wilson a life-changing contract and let him be the stop-gap for a few years.
I mean- some are saying that he's past his prime at 30. I don't think so, but in a worst-case scenario he'd start until Tua was ready to compete for the spotlight. Or in a best-case scenario, we'd have a 10 year starter. I don't see the downside if we have to spend double to triple Wilson's salary in the next few months either way....we could have 4 Suh's for that kind of cash.
Have to adjust stats for era even for 5-10 year differences otherwise you'll just see inflation due to changes in the league and not the QB. I did this a few years ago with adjusted passer rating for post-1978 QB's (pre-1978 and post-1978 have different standard deviations so I'd have to use z-scores to compare across all eras, but that's not as intuitive so this should suffice): So with adjusted rating you can expect similar performance in the 25-30 age range as in the 30-35+ age range, at least on average.
If Wilson is on the team next year there is a higher likelihood we make the playoffs than drafting Tua or any of the top tier prospects coming out. The team finished 7-9 last year with patchwork at the QB position, shed overpaid veterans and has a new defensive minded coaching staff that alone should help the defense develop. Russell Wilson makes this a 10 win team. There is no backup plan to develop Tua. The only downside and risk with Wilson is that he gets injured and you have to start over again.
I believe you are comparing apples to oranges. Wilson is a running quarterback. Without the threat of running he gets smothered. He is not like any qb you compared him too. Easier to stand in pocket and throw darts when your tall not 5’10”
Not for a Quarterback, and certainly not for what many consider to be one of the better ones in the game. If we have an opportunity to land a Russell Wilson we should definitely do it. I understand that you want to tank and lose as many games as possible in the most horrific fashion imagined, but that doesn't necessarily need to happen. We could acquire Russell Wilson and STILL build this football team the right way with him leading. I don't think that is such a bad idea.
He is good cause he can run. When i played it was well known 30 was the beginning of the end for your speed. He is not a normal qb. I appreciate all the different opinions. Will just have to agree to disagree. Thx
Wilson isn't a running QB, he just has an awful OL so he has to run for his life which he does well. Look at his running numbers the last 3 years compared to Steve Young's last 3 years. Wilson has 1221 yards and 4 TDs in 48 games while Young had 963 and 13 TDs in 42 games (using per game averages Young would have had 1101 yards if he played 48 games). Nobody would say Steve Young is a running QB just because he uses his legs and note that Young was 35,36, and 37 his final 3 years. Wilson just had the fewest rush attempts of his career and just threw for the most TD's of his career somehow I think he'll be ok if he's not rushing a whole lot. No reason to believe Wilson can't keep on his current pace rushing wise well into his 30's. People still believe short QB's can't succeed? Somebody should tell Drew Brees.
Was the op - are we getting Wilson? No. It was - if we could get him would you want us to do so, and if so for how much. If there are those who don't like Wilson then just say no. Or if those who don't like talking about him, just ignore the thread. Personally, I think it's an interesting consideration. We're looking for a franchise QB and that's most likely via the draft, but what if a top tier QB became available and we could lock him up for several years? Would that be better than trying to draft, and would Wilson fit the bill? Or how about Carr? Let's say the Raiders take a QB high in the first. Would anyone want us to take Derek Carr? How much would you give for him?
You've been proven wrong. Wilson is not a running QB. He is evasive in the pocket which is something we should all be wishing for after 7 years of Robo-Henneyhill 2.0
Bah, Tannehill was a great running QB whenever he sensed the pressure coming. It just so happened that he only figured that stuff out like 1 play in 20.
To answer the question if we could get him I would 100% be on board. We've been without a real franchise QB since 1999, there's no guarantee that we'll draft one that's the same caliber of player as Wilson. You sign Wilson and simply build around him. Tannehill's yearly salary was $19 million, what's $11 more million to sign an elite talent like Wilson? That's a loss of a Hayes and Amendola or some other nobody's.
