First round - Pass Rush or possibly trade back.

What position would you like to see the Dolphins target in the first round - or Trade?

I wouldn't mind trading back for more picks in this draft; the '19 class is extraordinarily deep, so much so that I think immediate starters can be found as late as the fourth round.

That being said, we're also in a good position to land a real gem at No. 13. A.J. Brown (WR), Jonah Williams (OT), Clelin Ferrell (EDGE), Rashan Gary (5-Tech), Jeffery Simmons (3-Tech), Christian Wilkins (3-Tech), Greedy Williams (CB), and Byron Murphy (CB) all project to be available. Further, Montez Sweat (EDGE) could see a draft-day slide into the teens in the wake of his (minor) heart issues.

No matter what we do, I'd like to see the team build up the trenches or target an edge rusher early.

I agree- the trenches has been our major weakness for a very long time now...and we lost 4 key pieces this off-season. We need a monster draft and trading back might be the smartest move available unless there's another generational guy like Fitzpatrick sitting there you just can't pass on.

I know I am just a casual fan and probably don't know what the hell I am talking about, but I would like to see a draft were we trade back from all of our day 1 and day 2 picks. Since this draft is deep on defensive talent, CK, Alf, and Simon suggested, on their recent podcast, we might get a decent guy or two in the mid rounds. For round 1 and 2, I would like to see us go OL. I am leaning towards Bradbury (C) late in the 1st, and if we can snag him Lindstrom (G) in the 2nd. for starters.

I honestly wouldnt mind trading out of the first this year if we picked up a first next year + something this year to even it out. I dont think I'd want to go out of the 2nd or 3rd but that is just me personally.

Especially if it's with a team we expect to have a poor season.

I'm not entering the draft with a rigid plan. We've had too many drafts where other teams have lost their minds to go in with a plan of need this here and that there. #13 is an interesting position because it's just outside that top 10 but just because nobodies mock draft will be how things happen then we'll probably have at least one 'Top 10' player available for us. Depending on the position of that player, that could make teams below us very stupid.

Basically trust your board, but if someone else wants to be really really stupid then let them.

I am definitely for trading back if it's a decent offer. Need to bring as much talent as possible.

I agree with all you guys about trading out of the first. Like any draft, your "steals" will be rounds 3 to 5. In the second, a big guy in the trenches like keyfin suggested would be nice.

Trading back would be great, but please, please, please remember you can't just decide to trade back and it will happen.

There have be three things for a trade to happen:

    A) A desire to trade back
    B) A team wanting to trade up
    C) Adequate compensation

If any ONE of those three things are missing, no trade will happen.

Every year, after the draft, people lose their **** that we should have traded back, but those people have no idea how many of those 3 things were available. People seem to always assume that B) is always there and we never trade back because of a lack of A). But I've never seen evidence that B) is always available.

Well, those "just out of the top 10" picks the past few years got us Tunsil, the highest rated lineman in his class and Fitzpatrick, the highest rated overall defensive player in his class. It seems like there's always a lot of value to be had in the 11-15 overall pick range and someone will always end up sliding due to a panic over certain positions (CB, LB, QB, etc.). So as long as we do our homework, it's going to be hard for us not to get a bargain on our guy at 13.

With that said, it really depends on who slides this season- it would be awesome if it was one of the top 4 QB's since we're viewed as a team in need of one. That would make an easy trade-back....possibly giving us a 2nd rounder for free to trade for Rosen. I think we're in a very good position though because season expectations are low and there's really not a bad move to be had as long as we grab a long term starter. The only thing I don't want us to do is grab a WR in the 1st since we've had a lot of misses there (Parker, Ginn, etc.)....I'd be thrilled with any other position (including QB or RB). My gut tells me that we're grabbing a defensive lineman though or someone in that front seven to plug holes.

Unless it's Murray, Haskins, or a very late round guy, I hope we don't go QB. I think we should shore up the OL first before we get our guy. Why set him up for failure? If we went defense, then it would probably be BPA, so I guess I wouldn't complain there. Most likely it will be a stud, and it's not like we can't use the help.

I think that this is a year to not overcomplicate things.

I don't know if you guys have watched a lot of tape on the pass rushers this year, but the top guys are really, really talented. If you look at our current pass rushers, we literally have nobody. Just by the pure fact that we have no one, it is obvious that organizationally, we think that the rebuild is going to start at the pass rush position.

Furthermore, the in the current state of the league, it is obvious that pass rushers are an incredibly coveted position. Just look at what the Bears gave up to get him. Personally, I think the Bears got the better end of the deal.

I think it is dangerous when you start trying to get cute, and you have a player that you are very confident that will pan out, but you try to get three players that might pan out.

I agree, but judging by what they do in NE, I could see them taking an interior DLineman. NE doesn't value edge rushers as much, but they do like having big, stud interior type of players.

Low key, this is the part of the draft I am most excited to see. Flores said that we are gonna run hybrid fronts, but I think that is code for, "let's see what our roster looks like before I decide what type of defense we are going to run." My guess is that he wants to run a 3-4. I gotta believe that the Dolphins are seriously interested in Dexter Lawrence.

However, the Dolphins have shown a ton of interest in Montez Sweat. I really think that he is our top choice. I gotta believe that Flores views him as Julius Peppers 2.0.

I agree with several of the other posters that trading back in the first, if compensation is good and there is team willing, would be the best option.

Either way I think we take best OL/DL available in the 1st and probably 2nd round as well.

Yeah of course, it's entirely dependent on a team wanting to move up as well as give the compensation we desire.

I dont personally care if we stay at 13, I just think we should explore the option unless we are dead set on someone.

It's also possible Flores doesnt want to do exactly what they did in NE.

They came up huge in the SB but it was a pretty iffy defense all year. I can definitely see him building a different type of unit while adhering to some of the same principals.

Edit: Not to mention it's really Grier at the end of the day.

Ok then as people have talked about moving out of the first let me pose this. What would it take for you to move out of the first round completely?

It depends- are you talking trading back in the 1st, then trading that pick to jump to the 2nd? If so, I'd try to get a 1st/3rd for 13 and then a 2nd/3rd for whatever we receive in pick #14-32. That would be optimal since we could potentially land 3 starters off 1 pick.

If you're talking about just one trade, then I'd want a 2nd, 3rd, and a premium young starter. That honestly wouldn't be a bad trade for either side if we want to go for Rosen- we get him + an early pick (2nd or 3rd) + a mid-round pick (4th thru 6th) and they get our 1st. They save face, land a high caliber starter and we get a QB plus a few solid prospects...doesn't everyone win in that scenario?

No because then we have Rosen :chuckle:. Being serious though, I wasn't going to add a number of trades for getting out the first because I guessed a few people would have different scenarios.

Does anyone here look at Jeffrey Simmons if we move down to late first round? How much does the fact that he will probably miss the season concern you? Or would the off-field incident a couple of years ago remove him from your board?

I do think the one positive with Rosen is that you really only have to give him one year to show hes capable.

On the other I hand I wouldnt want to lose major resources.

Just think that Rosen hopefully will be given another shot if not traded from the Cardinals. As they are or maybe eyeing Murray like everybody else.

Out of all of those potential picks you mention at 13, I would only pull the trigger for Christian Wilkins. All of the other potential picks at 13 have question marks. If Wilkins is not there I think it's best to trade down for more picks. This is a deep draft I think there will be more value in getting more picks.

A few guys I really like in this draft in no particular order or round, but would love to see then get are:

    DT Ed Oliver
    DE Brian Burns
    QB Easton Stick

Oliver and burns probably won't be available at 13, and I don't believe we should trade up for anyone. Stick can be had with one of our 7th round picks.

I think Oliver or Burns could be there, more likely Burns. Never thought Minkah would be there when we picked last year and disagree about Stick.
