Seahawks would be insane to let him go. Most of the league would be insane not to offer at least what Khalil Mack got the Raiders. I would absolutely give up that package, and maybe some more to boot. I don't think there is any shot of that actually happening though. You don't give away a prime aged, Super Bowl winning QB. Yeah, they money will be expensive to re-sign him. So will the next QB after him. And the next. And the next, etc. At some point, the NFL will figure something out. Either they make QB a unique, cap-free position, do something else dodgey, ignore it because league and team revenue allow for gargantuan caps, or the teams pull an MLB and collude to keep prices down.
One other amazing thing about Wilson has been his durability. For a supposed running QB he's been healthy for practically his entire career, on a team whose OL has been as bad or worse than Miami's. Russell Wilson is surely a wet dream but if it did happen it would instantly shift the balance of power in the AFCE.
I’ll give you three reasons why someone wouldn’t want to sign Wilson. 1) He’s black 2) he’s short 3) sorry I don’t have a third, oh yeah, because they didn’t have a hi regard for him predraft.
Seattle just needs to re-sign him. Maybe it's a little bit of East-coast bias but I can't pull for a QB that made his name somewhere else. I don't want Tom Brady. I don't want Peyton Manning. I don't want Aaron Rodgers or Drew Brees or anyone else either. Even if there's some success, it's always forgettable. And that's best case scenario like what happened in Denver with Peyton. Fast forward a few years and it's all over and nobody cares. But this is Miami so we already know what would happen. It'd be like the Suh deal. They'd bring in one piece that's "elite" and expect stuff to just happen around that guy. The Dolphins would screw that up. I know it. They've been doing that forever trying to buy one good piece and build around that guy. Just give me a HC and a GM that can draft and find the damn guy without signing record contracts. I don't want to root for Seattle's QB. Let Seattle keep that guy. EDIT: This would be different it we were talking about another position. If Luke Kuechly decides he doesn't want to stay in Carolina, then fine, that's different. I'll readily admit that. But QB is the face of your team. You either go get someone with elite potential who hasn't gotten over the hump so he can "prove it" and make history with your team (i.e. Favre going to Green Bay or even Lebron going to Miami) or you get someone in the draft and he's forever yours. That'd be my approach as a fan. As an owner wanting to turn it around and sell tickets? Yeah, I'd probably give up everything for him.
??? You think Broncos fans don't care that they won a SB because they won it with a QB that made his name elsewhere?? lol.. I guarantee you they're totally happy they won that SB and also happy they got Peyton, even if ironically they won the SB in a year Peyton didn't play well. You give up whatever you need to to get that elite QB if he becomes available. We should have done that with Drew Brees AFTER he made his name elsewhere and became highly sought after. I truly believe we'd have at least one SB win with Brees had we signed him instead of Culpepper, and no the Miami fanbase would not say "who cares about that SB.. Brees made his name elsewhere" lol.
That’s an awesome point, let him be a seahawk, we should be able to identify and develope our own..however when you were as high on the player from the beginning, all rules go out the window.
Do New Orleans fans care about Drew Brees’ prior success in San Diego? Did 49ers fans care that Steve Young was a Tampa Bay retread? Sure “home grown dude” is more saleable than “retread” or “mercenary”, but if you can build a Super Bowl winning dynasty then you do it however you can.
Take borderline out of the equation. Any team would pay their elite QB, and hopefully in return they would get creative with the contract to help the team.
I personally wouldn't. I'm not arguing he wouldnt be leaps and bounds better than what we have had since Marino, but I'm not looking for a guy who might drop off entirely in 4-5 years to pay absurd money. If he was 26 sure.
I like Wilson. Yes, I would trade 2 first rounders for him. The only part I would hesitate on is the 100% guaranteed. But what do I know? I don’t know Jack.
8-10 years? Lol. He's gonna be as effective as he is now scrambling around in circles when he's 38? Come on now.
If you look at his numbers he’s putting up great numbers inside the pocket. It just means whatever team he plays for when he’s 38 can’t neglect the OL the way the Seahawks have for the last 5 years.
Steve young played for 15 years waaaay back in the day.. The game is different more protected, Wilson shows innate ability to understand how to protect himself, has never missed a start, stays in phenomenal shape and condition, yes I believe in today’s game with today’s knowledge of strength training he most certainly can, laugh all you want. What makes Wilson great as he scrambles is his anticipation.. he’s always two steps ahead of defenders.
The notion that he can’t is silly, Tom Brady is going to be 42, they play a different style but Brady still has his foot quickness inside the pocket..
It's a totally different style. Brady does a quick step up into the pocket. Wilson alot of the time is already running backwards as soon as the ball is snapped.
I understand the different skill sets I’m just saying you don’t have to lose too much by 37, Wilson is a special athlete..if he works hard the drop off would not be significant.
That is your opinion and I respect that. I'm no professional scout nor is anyone here, we all have opinions on these guys. You may be right, then again maybe not.
Yes we all have opinions.. People have told me since predraft a lot of things that were wrong about Wilson, pro scouts included..so I don’t believe their opinion is any better.
Pro scouts get these wrong all the time. So do you, so do I. They also get a lot of things right they don't get credit for. I'm not sure what they have to do with anything since I didnt mention them, but I'd definitely trust their opinion more than yours or anyone elses on this board in general. That doesnt mean you cant be right where they are wrong. It just means they will be right more times out of ten than the normal person.
You're technically right after I just reread my post, I just meant it in terms of neither of our abilities have been recognized by the NFL. Not like...saying they are always right. Also I'm not saying I distrust posters here. The fact is every single one of us is missing relevant information about these players, is my only point.
What you say is true so when you have done much analysis on opinions without that relevant information you speak of, and they match up better than the ones that do, it’s where my trust is established.
Hard pass. The Dolphins are not an established football team, nor are they looking for one or a few more pieces to compete for a championship to justify bringing on board high priced veterans. Seattle was dominate during Wilson's tenure because of their elite defense, a solid running game for the most part, and being able to get high level, competent QB play from a QB on a rookie deal. They haven't been able to make nearly the impact in the postseason once they paid Wilson. You only pay hefty contracts to elite players.
Including the playoffs, the Seahawks lost 7 games by a total of 30 points. Roster spot for roster spot, last season, one could argue that Miami and Seahawks werent far off from one another. Elite level QBs dont win SBs by themselves. To say Wilson isn't elite is preposterous.
Didnt say we were the same team. said talent level was near the same. Offensive skill positions blow the seahawks out of the water.
Everyone but a couple thought Seattle with Wilson would be a bad team last year, I remember some saying if he got THAT team to the playoffs they would finally give up on the bias... If someone doesn't think this guy is great/elite on his own at this point, I think its clear their holding on to their previous agenda/bias..
Russell is great, but he was given the right team and coaching staff to allow his greatness to be honed. Not all QBs get that. Some get punished and punished hard.
Russell Wilson game and skillset explodes when it’s one on 1 against 11, he would of cane to this date no matter who drafted him..Independant skillset that is not dependent upon his surroundings.
This is true and I agree with you. However it is fair to wonder if he would've been "brought up" in a dysfunctional organization he may have been ruined before ever realizing that potential. I lean he would've found a way, but we have seen good QB's who can never recover from their upbringings.
With that sort of deal I think I'm glad the Dolphins didn't try to compete. Wilson is a talented guy but doing this from the ground up just feels like the right way to do things. I get the argument that if you can find your franchise QB - assuming for sake of argument that Wilson would prove to be that guy - then you build around him. However, having a QB 'hog' that much of the cap just doesn't seem to be any way to build sustained success, and I'd rather see a sustainable, successful Dolphins franchise, winning for over a decade, with good cap management, rather than a shorter spike and then down again.
Wilson was much too mature and responsible for him to fail on his own accord.. jmo, the franchise didn’t make the man.. Highest paid in the game D.. Seattle ain’t stupid. Deserved contract..and folks who can’t give him the respect he has earned are just bias..( not talking about you)
