Lawrence it is apparently

Discussion in 'NFL Draft Forum' started by BitcoinMillionaire, Sep 18, 2019.

  1. As I mentioned awhile back my brother-in-law is a scout for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He is pretty tied in with the scouting community, as they all are since networking is a big component of the business. He knows some Dolphins guys, not closely, but they all end up at the same hotels, bars, and games through much of the year.

Long story short, he said he did not think the Dolphins were targeting any of the big-3 QBs in 2020, but will use that draft to build foundation pieces on the OL, DL, and secondary. particularly he said they will look to get the best pass rusher in the draft, a top 2-3 OT, and possibly WR or CB depending on where value falls in the 1st round. He said the 2nds will be additional OL or DBs. He said that there will be a team or two that falls in love with Tua or Herbert and he would not be surprised if the Dolphins parlay that love affair into even more ammo in 2020 or 2021. He said most he have talked to don't think the Dolphins are targeting a QB in 2020 but will hold off until 2021. He said of course Lawrence is the crown jewel and would be the 1st player taken this year, next year, and every year after. He also said to watch Fields from Ohio state as he is climbing up a lot of evaluators boards. He did not think much of Jordan Love, but saw him as a great guy to develop for 3-4 years.

In his estimation Rosen will be given considerable leeway and opportunity to challenge for the position - he thinks the staff is well aware that the guy has nothing around him this year and it only makes sense to let Fitz take a bit of a beating. He believes the Dolphins staff rates Rosen much higher than some of the reports suggest - it did not fall on deaf ears btw when Rosen said that the plan was for this team to be his at some point during one of the press conferences. He said that idea wasnt organically Rosen but clearly had been said to him in some form. His evaluation was that Rosen would be above Fromm significantly, slightly above Tua, and around Herbert's level. People love Herbert's size btw (dont love his laid back demeanor) he said, and love Tua's "program-ability" but dont love his size or body. His parents, read DAD, also is a cause for some concern.

In total, he though the Dolphins will be really bad for 2-3 years anyway and if any systematic tanking is being discussed they will likely press to get the best QB in college for that effort, which he stated was Lawrence. He also said Fields may be a surprise, as his size, body, and skill set presents a much higher ceiling than Tua or Fromm, although less certain about Herbert.

In general, he is a straight shooter and not prone to hyperbole and answered most of my questions with a very honest "I don't know." These were his opinions but also ones at least somewhat formed from the rampant gossip among pro scouts, he said the rumor mill is like a soap opera in his business. I wont give his name but you can find his name on the Tampa Bay website, and if you ever stayed in Vegas you may have stayed at a hotel similarly named....that should make it easy for you unless you are a digital luddite.

No comment on the gamble involved in being a the top of the 2021 draft? Trading for position only works if the team holding the #1 spot isn't interested in Lawrence too. If the Dolphins aren't bad enough to be at #1 (the only guaranteed way to get your pick), then they could end up without a QB of their choice (unless some other guy shows up big).

    No mention of Jalen Hurts?

To be fair, it IS essentially what the Browns did. They had 3 firsts in 2017 (taking Garrett/Peppers/Njoku) and then grabbing Baker first overall the next year.

That's a super risky strategy though, as there is no guarantee you can have a top 2-3 pick in two consecutive years, especially if we are adding significantly to the core via FA as well as draft. I also think it means that Flores is a failure at HC.

That said, getting Chase Young, Jerry Jeudy and, say, Johnathan Taylor or Jeff Okudah this draft followed by Trevor or Fields and an OT in the next?

I dunno, I think if you are sold on Tua, then you gotta pull the trigger. If not, then punting on QB is an easier decision.

I appreciate you passing along the info. Time will tell. Obviously, I am a nobody and don't have any inside sources, but I have a hard time believing that we won't take a QB this year. I like Lawerance, but there are good QBs in this class too that could help us turn the corner.

I appreciate the insight, and this is absolutely what I want the team to do. Roll with Rosen this year and next as the starter, and give him every chance to show what he can do. Use the bounty of picks in the 2020 draft to build up the team around him, and selectively sign free agents to bolster the club. Then, in the Spring of 2021, we'll still have a ton of picks coming, and a ton of cap room, and can make the long term call between Rosen, Lawrence or someone else at that point.
