Coulda stayed put at #48 and taken Erik McCoy who’s one of the most impressive rookies in the entire league.
Agreed, loved mccoy, I said when we drafted him that Deiter is very limited athletically. He is a decent run blocker, but his pass blocking is very lacking. There were several other better overall linemen available with that pick. Dolphins just completely suck at drafting linemen past the first round. Its been that way ever since Jimmy Johnson retired. We really need to overhaul our OL scouting.
Even with the rookie wall being a thing, not being able to crack the starting OL for this team.... wow, not a good sign for his career in Miami.
I believe that Grier needs to be hitting a moment of introspection. His ability to evaluate mid-round offensive linemen is horrendous. It is one miss after another, and there is seemingly never a hit. I do not think that this is the end of the world as a GM. Organizationally, there has to be something that we can do to fix this. Whether it be a consulting firm that has a proven track record on OL or hiring a consultant with expertise in OL, these all seem to be probable. Ross has been more than generous with the team, and I really think that he would be willing to spend on evaluators to help bring in better talent. Even if Dolphins were to hire someone with a proven track record on scouting offensive linemen to teach Grier their methodology for evaluating, it would seem to be money well spent. Many jobs have professional development opportunities. I don't think that this is much different.
It reports on how dieter has not been playing very well according to our Oline coach and was demoted from the starting lineup for the last game against the jets. It goes on to speculate wether this was done to send a message to the whole team or just because Deiter actually sucked that bad. It finishes with pointing out that if deiter does not pan out he would be another in a long line of failed dolphins mid round OL picks and that Miami has not drafted a good starting offensive lineman outside of the first round since Todd Wade back in the 2000 draft almost 20 years ago.
Once again the front office and scouting department has proven they have no idea how to evaluate offensive linemen past the 1st round. I don't have a lot of worry about other positions but if you can't get that O line right nothing else matters. And these are the guys that have a huge pile of draft picks and salary cap money available to them next year with a charge to rebuilding this team. Kinda scary
Ouch - contradicts what Coach Flo said as well, so interesting that the OLine coach has come out & panned him. That would have been an interesting conversation between the two at the facility Thanks Hitman
Here is a good quote from the article since you cant see it. “I don’t want to overextend what he’s done, or over-inflate his production or lack of production one way or another. I don’t know,” DeGuglielmo said when pressed to address Deiter’s growth. “It takes a while to truly get a good read of an offensive lineman. It’s a little different. You’ve got to weigh all of the pieces together.”
I think its is a way of tracking who’s in charge of your personnel Dept and holding them accountable, not only the misses, but the Players that were available when you did pick the inferior prospect.. I think it’s to early to judge this one but in general I don’t have a problem with people doing what drizzy did..jmo.
It is a bit annoying that the Sentinel have decided that no-one outside the US can read their articles, although it does mean that I miss most of Omar's pearls of wisdom (win win I say). So he's not really slated him then, just managing expectations - he's had a revolving door at LT throughout the season & Kilgore at C, so it's not unduly surprising that he's struggled a bit. With a good offseason and better play at LT & C, he may be better, although there have been some comments that he could play C, as he had done so at college. We could get one of the good FA guards, slide him to C, slide Davis back to RG and get two new tackles (combination of FA or draft)
I think there are a couple ways to interpret it. 1) Face Value: He really isnt sure about him yet and wants to see how different pieces perform. 2) He is down on him, because while his comments weren't negative they weren't exactly positive either. I honestly cant say myself which it is.
He played a season at center in college and he actually looked better there than at guard imo. Moving him to center and seeing how he does would be a good option. I like your plan. Makes a lot of sense considering what we have.
I think its option 2. Coaches usually like to put a positive spin on players for the public. If that was the best he could say about deiter's play publicly it means privately he most likely thinks he sucks.
I would think so too. I only say I cant know because, as much as I believe that is the case, I cant jump into his head to confirm it.
