I don’t ever want it to die. We had our franchise quarterback and we lost him, lost him due to poor decisions made at the top in choosing some Wunderkind to be our head coach.

When folks gripe and bellyache about our quarterback situation I want this thread to be a constant reminder.

Are you going to come back for some humble pie when Tua leads us to the Super Bowl? Or will this continue until after Tannehill's Hall of Fame enshrinement?

You act like Tannehill wasn't given a shot. He was here for 7 years under a multitude of mostly incompetent coaching. He also had flaws that led the team to move on. I know you feel great pleasure in the utopian idea of Tannehill's perfection but that wasn't the case for long stretches of his tenure here.

He's exceeded his predicted output elsewhere and has proven to be a very good QB under ideal conditions, and for that we should admonish the previous incompetent coaching staffs. But to go on like we let Dan Marino slip through our fingers is a bit ridiculous.

I wouldn't call Tennessee "ideal conditions." I mean, Mariota wasn't successful in the same "ideal conditions." Henry wasn't playing like a man possessed prior to Tannehill taking the reigns. I mean, I agree with with much of what you wrote, Bum, but I strongly disagree with the idea that Tannehill needs an ideal situation.

    Ideal for Tannehill.
    Good to great running game.
    Above average blocking.
Time in the pocket to move around.
A coaching staff that understands what a balanced offense means,

That's ideal for Tannehill. The accuracy and ball velocity can shine under those conditions. Mariota is just a bad QB who is very inaccurate. Defenders could just stack the box because they knew Mariota couldn't get it done. Tannehill, on the other hand, could throw 60 yard bombs to perfection against 1 on 1 coverage.

Every QB has their own set if ideal conditions and all of their teams strive to come as close to those conditions as possible.

I'm not debating the fact that some guys won't succeed in any situation. I believe that is true. That said, very few will succeed in all conditions.

Only if you too are just as willing to have a piece of humble pie with your bold prediction.

You speak of Tannehill having a shot here in Miami and blew it. That’s such a shortsighted uneducated statement. Football players are nothing more than pieces on a chess board, executing the plays sent in by the coaching staff. Some players execute plays better than others but the bottom line is that’s all they are.

Tannehill executed what he was told to execute and did so well. What was poor wasn’t Tannehill’s play with the Dolphins, it was the plays that and overall offensive scheme that was poor. His performance this past season in Tennessee puts this debate to bed once and for all. He played on a much better coached team, bottom line.

I guess some people can't let go of the fact that they've got a lot of RT17 Dolphins gear in their closet which will never ever see the light of day again.

While I'm on, does anyone want to buy a Fitzpatrick 29 home jersey?

I pretty much 100% agree with this.

If your offense is predictable, lacks talent at key spots and is constantly struggling to run plays the way they are drawn up, most QB are going to look bad at least a portion of the time.

I've often wondered that if Ryan had had more of an alpha personality, would he have rebelled against the coaching that didn't allow him to audible or move out of the pocket?
Terrible coaching and making him do what wasn't nature to him ruined him, as his rookie year promised much. He had his chance and I doubt whether this would have helped with his pocket presence but could he have been more than he was - we will never know.

That’s hard to say, Tannehill rebelling as you put it. Had he rebelled and it worked, he could have gotten away with it but if the other players weren’t on the same page and his rebellion failed miserably, he would have been benched.

Saw a documentary on Marino once and this particular segment focused on JJ’s days here and how Marino was being throttled back. In this interview, I believe it was Fryar...May have been someone else; anyhow he was supposed to run the hitch and Marino said eff it, run the go. Now Johnson being the man he was, the receiver KNEW he had better run the hitch but...Marino was throwing the ball so he ran the go. Bottom line, TD, Dolphins won and Marino was given the game ball.

Marino was established and could rebel. Tannehill wasn’t so it would have been a serious gamble

Totally agree DK re the other players having to be on the same page, as it could have backfired - the other players must have frustrated though, as they could probably see that some plays were not going to work but had to stick to the called play. If they could see that it was for the good of the team, they hopefully would have followed him as long as they were getting results (particularly if they were not convinced about the coaches either).

Re Marino, I think it was the Colts game and Oronde Gadsden was the receiver - Oronde mentioned it in his episode of The Fish Tank. I did think about adding Marino as an example when I mentioned rebelling (I couldn't think of a better way to describe it - it's not really the right one though) but I know that Johnson had him on a tight leash later on.

Yea I think you’re right that it was Gadsden in that particular game. At that point in Marino’s career he was very well established that he could’ve say eff a certain play, THIS is what we’re going to do and Marino garnered such respect that the other players were going to do what Marino said.

Sadly, the Dolphins had been so dysfunctional and didn’t allow Tannehill to become that respected, established leader with a proven track record of wins for him to be able to pull a Marino Rebel...even if he had been inclined to do so.

It just makes me so happy for him that he was on a well coached team with the confidence in him that they and Tannehill were able to march up and down the field against opposing defenses...running or throwing

In my opinion, offensively the Tennessee Titans were the epitome of what every team should strive to have their teams be...a balanced offensive attack that kept defenses off balanced and bludgeon them into submission

Think Marino was helped by the fact that Shula basically tailored the offense to his strengths, whereas multiple coaching staffs didn't do that with RT. Instead, they handcuffed him somewhat & made him play in a way that was alien to him. After the 2nd year, Dan could probably get away with anything (particularly changing a running to a passing play, which he did often I reckon).
Marino was/is a totally different personality to RT - fiery as opposed to submissive (that's how RT seemed to me anyhow). Would love to have seen him just say eff it and change the play just to see the look on Philbin's face.
Like you, I'm happy that he got away and got a chance to play on an offense that suits his style and a coaching staff that played to his strengths.
You are right re the offense - would love to see teams deal with that in Miami, whilst it would still work in December in Foxboro.

Keep reading reports that the Titans are pursuing Brady. Doesn't make much sense to me given how they played down the stretch with Ryan... If they let him walk, where do you guys think he lands? I doubt he'd want to be a backup to Brady nor would it make any financial sense for him assuming he can get a few bids to bid on him as a full time starter.

I would love to see Tannehill wearing AQUA AND ORANGE again...

I would sign him in a heartbeat if the Titans are foolish enough to let him walk.

Ditch Fitzmagic Draft a QB to develop... ( Hurts or Gordon ) Roll with Tannehill

We have 5 picks in the first two rounds... So trade for a guard like Trai Turner... Sign Thuney.... Draft Biadasz and Prince Wonegho in the second round and rebuild the line.

With the three picks in the first round... Okudah, Weaver, and Baun... Sign Eckler if the Chargers are foolish enough to not pay him.

Draft a big back like Dillon in the third... And maybe Duvarney to round out the offense.

Go win 12 games and the division next year.

I’ve been reading similar stories and it makes zero sense to me. Why would you (as an owner) pull the trigger on a huge free agent contract on an aged quarterback that may or may not play well in your particular system when you already have a quarterback that’s proven himself by leading your team just shy of the Super Bowl. It just makes zero sense.

Off the top of my head, I can’t think of any quarterback that was traded from one team to another and then right back to his original team, but if the Titans were to do something as foolish as to sign Brady, I think I would seriously consider trading one of our first picks to Tennessee to bring Tannehill back to Miami.

Along with jersey sales and other related things. Would automatically get a bunch of scheduled primetime games, I'd imagine. Money is a massive motivator for owners.

I really don’t see why not. There’s an old adage, “one man’s trash is another man’s treasure”.

We dumped Tannehill as “trash” and yet another team picked him up and was just one game away from the Super Bowl.

The Titans proved to the Dolphins that Tannehill wasn’t trash at all. They proved we had been using him wrong. Is it Tannehill’s fault our coaches weren’t playing the game to his strengths?

The Titans proved one thing...the Miami Dolphins need to take a hard look in the mirror before casting off such talent.

We can't go that far though. He had a great season, but he needs to display consistency before I'd feel good about committing a huge chunk of cap space toward him. Until then, he's Nick Foles.

Foles and Tannehill are textbook cases in what's wrong with teams in the NFL. How is it you can have players that are "trash" with other teams and have immeasurable success with others?

I truly believe too many times, teams in the league, particularly at the quarterback position draft players and instead of tailoring their offense around their particular skills set, try to have them change their style of play. Well its no wonder most quarterbacks either fail or have only mediocre success

It's not exclusive to the NFL. It happens all the time over here in soccerball.

Take my team - Sheffield United. After getting relegated from the second tier, we spent 6 years in the third before we appointed Chris Wilder as coach. He supported the club from being a boy, was a ball boy, junior player, senior pro and now, after cutting his managerial teeth with several teams in the lower leagues, was managing his boyhood club. He came with a plan though. He bought cast offs, square pegs in round holes, players that fitted his plan. He took us from the third tier to the second in his first season, and from the second to the Premier League last year after 2 seasons in the second. We're now sitting in 7th with a game in hand, on the verge of qualifying for a European Cup and pundits everywhere are marveling over Sheffield United's unique 'overlapping centre halves style of play'.

We've still got the nucleus of the journeymen and misfits of the side that came up out of the third tier but we're giving the big boys a run for their money. Guess it's all about systems and coaching and finding the players that fit that style.

If you were paying attention to Tannehill you knew that he was far from Trash.

Before Adam Gase came to Miami Tannehill had put up back to back seasons on ****ty football teams that were very respectable. He was completing more than 60% of his passes.. ( 64% I think ) He was throwing more touchdowns than picks... He averaged over 4000 yards and 24 touchdowns a season over those two years... And then he got hurt... and we got Adam ****ing Gase.

Tannehill since he was drafted improved his accuracy...He improved his touch on deep routes...He showed a lot of growth and maturity... He was tough as nails and mobile.

So it came as no surprise when he Beat out Mariota for the starting job in Tennessee and it came as no surprise that when placed in a half-decent situation where there was a slightly above average O line, a dependable running back and a good head coach...That Tannehill suddenly looked like he was a pro bowler out there.

Lead the league in yards per pass... Lead the league in QB rating and was second in completion percentage Next-gen stats ranked him 8th overall for QB play last year... and The Titans under Tannehill were the number two scoring offense in football next to the Ravens.

Tannehill is not Russel Wilson or Aaron Rodgers... Let's not get carried away... But he is more than capable of leading a team to the Superbowl. He led the Titans to two playoff wins on the road against The defending Superbowl Champs and the #1 team in football last season... ( Ravens )

The Titans did not have a #1 receiver... Henry is a very good running back... But the receivers were young... I think Brown could be really good as he matures. Davis is good but not great...

Back to the Dolphins and Tannehill... On a well-run team that has an actual defense, an O line, and a running game... You can win on the road in the playoffs in New England and Baltimore with Ryan Tannehill... We just saw it happen. The titans were not stacked on Defense or at wide receiver either... They just did not suck.

When Tannehill was in Miami we had arguably the least amount of talent in the league on our roster... Outside of the Browns maybe.

Everything out there says he's expected to resign with Tennessee and it's their #1 priority this off-season. If they did pursue Brady though, I could easily see Tannehill in New England for the next decade. I've thought that for several years now and if it happens, then so be it. He deserves a team that will appreciate him and actually try to protect him.

Actually, I think Tannehill can do better other places.

He made a success out of a mess last year.

I hope he is rewarded monetarily or by moving to a better team.

I don't see a future for him here in Miami.
