Source: The #Dolphins are getting #Cowboys FA CB Byron Jones. A massive deal for the now highest-paid corner.
Big money, but we have it to spend. Him and Lawson are big upgrades defensively, and if X can contribute next year that will be a big boost to the secondary. Also means we can skip mid 1st round CB types.
This has been exciting so far. Flores showed what he can do with nothing. Upgrade OL and all 3 levels of your defense then add a ton of talent through the draft. #finup
Howard may still get suspended for his arrest. So im not sure what kind of value they would get, and that contract is starting to look regretful.
Looks to me like they're trying to address the defense in free agency so they can concentrate on offense in the draft.
That could be true, but I don't think that most of the moves that the team has made will mean all that much long term. I think that Flowers and Lawson are moves to fill holes that were a huge weakness with a decent starter for a couple of years. That's smart, but its not something that's going to make the Fins into a big winner. I'm hoping that Flowers and Davis are our 4th and 5th best offensive linemen by Week One. Jones and Howard should obviously be a premier corner duo, which is wonderful, and helps the overall defense. And Van Noy is a good, versitile, veteran player who will help in all phases of the defense. These moves should make it easier for the Fins not to be awful in the coming season, certainly. Where I think we absolutely overachieved to get to five wins a year ago, that should be the baseline now. However, I still don't think that we're comfortably an 8-8 quality team yet. The fact that this will not be a regular offseason and who knows when the players will be able to work with the coaches will make bringing all of these new faces onto the same page more difficult as well.
I honestly wonder if Howard might be on his way out when its realistic contract and cap hit wise. That is a hell of a lot of money to spend on corners, one with a bad injury none the less.
You might be right, and its plausible as soon as a year from now, when his dead money hit would be 4m vs a cap savings of about 9m. The year after that, there would be less than 3m in dead money and a net savings of 11m. We'll see how it all works out on the field this coming season, and then go from there. If things are awesome all around, I have to think that they'll keep him.
Why do people view Howard as a big trade chip? Injury and salary make him a liability imo. We are better served by holding onto him.
I dont necessarily think he will net much in a trade, but if he cant play a full season this year at a high level, I'd cut him and run away from his contract like it had coronavirus.
Yeah he could be a casualty next year if he doesn't resume his high level of play. I just don't think it's reasonable to expect the Redskins or Lions to see him as hugely valuable in a trade-up. He has some elite potential, but between his contract, injuries and off-field issue I don't see anyone clamoring for him in anything but a salary dump. I think it is far more likely Flores is going to experiment and hope he has two shut-down corners to play with for at least one year while we build our lines.
Per a league source, the contracts that Jones will sign with the Dolphins has a value of $82.5 million over five years. That’s an average from signing of $16.5 million per year. Here are the details: 1. Signing bonus: $15 million. 2. 2020 salary: $11 million, fully guaranteed. 3. 2021 salary: $14 million, fully guaranteed. 4. 2022 salary: $14.375 million, guaranteed for injury only at signing; $6 million is also guaranteed for skill/cap, and that remaining $8.375 million is guaranteed for skill and cap on the fifth day of the 2022 league year. 5. 2023 salary $13.5 million. 6. 2024 roster bonus: $1 million, due on the fifth day of the league year. 7. 2024 salary: $12.425 million. 8. Workout bonuses: $100,000 in 2023 and 2024. 9. Per-game roster bonuses: Up to $500,000 per year in 2023 and 2024. So the deal has $46 million fully guaranteed at signing, with another $8.375 million guaranteed for injury through the first two seasons. And it’s definitely the best deal ever signed by a cornerback.
That's the way sport is, I understand but how do you need and spend that much money? I'm not moaning or begrudging and I get all what folk say about short career, potential career ending injuries etc etc but that's a lot of dough to get through for anyone. I bought a set of Makita power tools out of a recent windfall and I thought all my christmases had come at once. I guess if you've got that much cash and the fascia board comes away in a gale, you just buy a new crib...
It's because that's the kind of money the league pulls in. It's going somewhere, might as well be the players who are the actual "product". Reports are that the Raiders actually offered more money overall, but Miami beat them out by frontloading the deal, which the Raiders couldn't/wouldn't match.
Front loading a contract is always the best thing to do if possible. If fact as a team, if I couldnt front load the contract to the first or second (or both) years, of a contract longer than 3 years I would never sign the player unless it was a Franchise type QB. Incentives are the other best option, but less appealing to a FA.
