I looked into it, given that its free, and decided that its not for me. I did renew my PS+ subscription yesterday though, given that its 25% off. Mine was going to expire on Thanksgiving otherwise.

Middle Earth: Shadow of Mordor is still the most fun I had playing a game since it came out. I had nothing but pure joy. I have no idea why the game mechanic of having a character who defeated you level up and having revenge missions against that character isn't in more open-world games. I love that game.

Shadow of War doesn't have the same punch due to the fact that you start off practically like a God and dying is mostly done by being super careless.

I am surprised you do not like it due to you liking open world games.

Also, my favorite part of Open World games is attacking a base with a group of my fellow minions. So, this game was made for me. Just wish it wasn't built from the ground up with micro transactions, as I think the game would have been so much more fun if they made it with fun in mind rather than making money by annoying the player.

Micro transactions are the worst thing that has happened to gaming since releasing holding back parts of games in the form of Expansions/DLC, especially launch day expansions/DLC.

I'm playing The Last of Us P2, and I've really been enjoying it. This is as about as deep as I go into the horror genre.

I hope that you enjoy it. I know lots of people do. But thats way, way too far into the horror genre for me. I even hated it when Uncharted had a zombie section in the dark. Freaked me out and I never did that section again.

Haha. The mutants in the first one? Yeah that part is stressful. Last horror I played was P. T. if you want to count that. I enjoy watching other poor souls on YouTube play them however.

There are enemies called stalkers in the new TLoU which you can't listen to and they like to hide around corners and ambush you when you're not looking. Freaky. And there was a part that I played through yesterday that involved a workbench, without trying to spoil anything, that was literally hair-raising.

The acting in this is better than a lot of movies, even though the female characters are kind of mopey and overall story is pretty bleak.

Picked up Spiritfarer. If you like story driven games that have a hint of animal crossing then this game is for you. Basically you build up your boat, feed a bunch of people, learn about their lives, and then send them off to the next stop to the great beyond.

A nice casual game and very mature. These spirits are dealing with adult issues. A work of art as well. Just beautiful to look at. It is my opinion that this game is a work of art.

So, I set up the Switch that I bought my family, and everyone loved it. But, after about 5 days, we realized that the left Joycon was dead and wouldn't charge. After some time spent researching it online, it seems like its a fairly common problem. So I called Nintendo, and sent it off to be fixed or replaced. Yay. 6-8 weeks turnaround time. Thankfully, I also bought the adapter so we can use a PS4 controller with it, so that's what we're doing until we get it back.

My wife is playing Breath of the Wild, and it looks really cool. I'll play it through myself once she's finished. My daughters spent as much free time as we let them playing Pokemon and Animal Crossing, lol.

Yeah the JoyCon drift is a pain in the ***, as my buddy deals with it on his. I must have got lucky. I also mostly play with a pro controller.

You might not get to play BotW for awhile if you're waiting for your wife to finish it.. lol.

Really unique game from a direction standpoint.

I haven't even gotten to the point where I could encounter drift, though, lol. It looks like the battery inside mine was dead from the get go.

As far as BOTW, that's ok. She deserves a game she can enjoy too. Hopefully, I'll eventually get my PS5 and have those game. For now, I ordered Immortals: Fenyx Rising after it went on sale half off, so I'll play through that one for the rest of January, probably.

Two playthroughs of Trials of Mana and I'm all ready to try Expert mode, but I had to walk away for a bit. I've logged 60 hours in my two playthroughs, carrying through with the post-game each time. There's room for more Mana games, Squeenix! Had a blast figuring out my party and class combos, I'm such a sucker for that and the original Seiken Densestu 3 was one of my favorite games I played when I figured out emulators a dozen years ago. I do believe, however, that every action RPG should have some form of FF12's Gambit System to a degree. The AI in Trials is pretty lackluster.

Also flew through the third of the Tomb Raider reboots since it was free for PS Plus users. Easily the worst one in the series- it almost felt like the developers rushed knowing they had the Avengers IP waiting in the wings. A crazy amount of jank, boring Lara, and I'm beginning to find I really loathe jungle settings. Art design from this team is top notch but it can't seem to capture the scale or maturity of the Uncharted series it pulls so liberally from.

Eyeing up Fire Emblem: Three Houses but I'm also trying to wait for Bravely Default II since I know that will also scratch the class/party meta itch. I'm also about to try the Switch demo for Monster Hunter Rise, which looks like the Switch's version of the excellent Monster Hunter World (Sony's exclusive version). One of my favorite ARPG series, if not my favorite of all time. I look for any excuse to start over in a new installment.

I ended up getting Immortals: Fenyx Rising because it was on sale half off, and I'm really enjoying it. It keeps getting compared to BOTW, but really aside from some broad similarities like finding objects to add to the health bar, the games are really different. I would call this one AC: Odyssey, but animated by Pixar, and written by the team that made Ratchet & Clank.

Its an interesting combination of stuff. It's made by Ubisoft and plays exactly like the last few AC games. It even has some of the same legacy control issues that have been part of AC for 13 years now. But the look of the game is very much more of a exaggerated cartoon, and it doesn't pretend to take place in the real world or take itself seriously whatsoever, which was very much the right move IMO. The whole game is narrated by Zeus and Prometheus and is really funny, but does assume that you have a detailed knowledge of Greek mythology, or its all going to fly over your head.

I've put about 40 hours into it, and its very challenging. With a lot of the puzzles, you don't just need to figure out how to solve the puzzle, you need to find the puzzle in the first place, and then figure out what the solution is supposed to be. The controls are tight, but the game demands that you be really fast in order to be able to complete some of the things, so I end up doing them many times over.

Pokemon can be fun but man that series has rested on its laurels and gotten stale. There's definitely no point in buying every installment unless you're an obsessed superfan which, credit where it's due, they've cultivated.

There was an indie competitor last year that really made waves, but the name escapes me. As they grow their monster roster, so will they grow into Pokemon's more casual fan segment (me). It looked cleaner and more fun in every way and they're not strictly beholden to the Pokemon "formula". I think that competition is definitely needed. The environment in Sword and Shield looked like *** in the gameplay videos.

Its simplistic, but clean. I've watched my kids play it for a month now and just kind of casually jumped on board to try it out. And honestly, Persona 5 is absolutely a Pokemon clone in many ways with its battle systems, so having spent close to 200 hours on that one, getting into Pokemon itself was really easy. And heck, despite the fact that Persona is on the PS4, the graphics are pretty equal between the two.

I finished my first playthrough of Immortals. At about 90 hours, its a much more substantial game than the previews gave it credit for. Very challenging sections that I won't ever likely be able to get though, too, plus the DLC is a separate thing, so its not included in the main playthough. I'll get to that next.

I definately recommend it as a fun action RPG. I think I'll do the DLC and then shelve it until I can get a PS5 to play through again later on.

I have a PS4 Pro. Not a lot of frame drops but some hitches during a lot of explosions and big enemy spawns. Also, some issues with texture pop-in but usually with smaller and inconsequential environmental things. If you have a base PS4 and you're planning on getting a PS5, I would wait. At least add it to your library awhile though as its free for PS Plus users and they may switch it out soon.

Yes, you can. The "Add Library" button appears before/over-the-top of the "Download" option. Then you can download it any time you want through the Library option of the PS4 dash.

Went back to Slay the Spire for a # of runs this weekend. Got the Silent through Ascension 4 (though couldn't kill the heart), but still couldn't get the Defect through Ascension 4 (in the middle of attempt like 20 right now and it's going ok on floor 32 or so). Had Ironclad through Ascension 4 for a while now, so didn't try them more (he's the only one I have even killed the heart with, though I forget which Ascension).

I had bought Ni No Kuni 2 for my wife a while back, and she kind of gave up on it after a little bit and never went back to it. So with nothing new to play at the moment, I decided to give it a go, and it was OK. Its whole vibe is that you're basically playing a Studio Ghibli movie, so if you're into that, it can be cool.

The parts that frustrated me were that just like Legend of Mana, which I played last year, you can't really turn any of your party members into a white mage to heal the others, and I constantly found myself having to pause and heal myself, which drives me crazy. And on top of that, also like LoM, the game limits you to ten of any one item in battle. So even if I have 200 heal potions, I can only use ten of them, which is so very, very stupid.

In the end, while the game has a lot of content, the vast majority of it is all "surface", and the player has little to no control over it. You just unlock the various things that are there. And although the game for some reason has a teen rating, its written and acted in a very simple way, and I would have classified it as Y7.

For now, I'm just waiting until the summer, when Biomutant, the Mass Effect Remake, and Edge of Eternity come out. Unless of course a PS5 falls into my lap.

Yeah, the Pokémon aspect of the first one was cool.

Yes, I've thought about Bravery 2, but I have to wait in line for the Switch, lol. When my kids aren't in school or doing homework, one of them often has it. And my wife often plays Breath of the Wild after they go to bed. Its on the main level of the house where the bedrooms are, and the PS4 is in my man cave in the basement, so that's where I go when they're all asleep.

I was originally going to wait until I had a PS5 to give Final Fantasy XV a second go, but seeing as that will likely be months away, I decided to reinstall the game, download all of the updates and DLC (given that its half off right now) and jump back into it. I haven't played it in four years, so in some ways I'm sure it'll feel pretty fresh.

I just couldn't bring myself to finish it, but I should probably do the same thing eventually. I get so obsessed with the sidequests in most games (I'm a "collector" type of player), and I got to a point where I was trying to catch all the fish and lost interest.

I should probably just not do that. I'm also not looking forward to stepping back into that combat system after, what I feel, was a more refined and gratifying experience in Remake.

Taking a break from Bravely Default 2 (I'm into the endgame/post-game segment after 70 or so hours). I'm incredibly content that there is a lot more to do.

I'm playing through Devil May Cry 5 again to counter the slower, more methodical pace of Bravely. I'll use both to take up my days leading up to the release of Monster Hunter Rise.

It's been getting nice here in the Northeast so I've gotten a chance to shoot some basketball and I'm going on a hike today. Video games are a nice place to be throughout the pandemic but I do feel guilty after playing all day every day in between submitting applications for jobs.

Very frustrated that I had another Dualshock 4 controller break. This time, it's the R stick. And while it doesn't feel physically broken like the others in the past, when I try to play a game where I move the character around the screen using it (which is of course a lot of them), the character kind of stumbles and hesitates when I push in the up direction. The other directions seem fine, but obviously they're used a lot less frequently. 15 months. Boo.

I feel bad buying yet another one given that I'm hoping to buy a PS5 and extra controller ASAP, but I'm not going to keep using the broken one every day, so I ordered a half price knock off on Amazon. I guess I'll see what I get, but it it lasts more than a year and a half, that's better than the last couple of Sony ones.

I picked up PGA 2K21 on sale from the PSN and, man, am I glad I only paid $19.97 for this. The game is inferior in just about every way to the last Tiger Woods game I owned about ten years ago, including having graphics and a character creator worse than that PS3 game did. I think the only advantage it has is a larger number of courses, but this is a bare bones, sub par experience that I would not recommend. The cartoonish, over the top Hot Shots Everybody's Golf from four years ago is a much tighter golf sim than this one is.

I feel like I have far too little control over my character and swing (its weirdly loose and stiff at the same time), the items that you can buy with in game currency don't seem to improve your character's performance at all, you gain XP but it doesn't seem to mean anything other than occasionally giving you a piece of clothing, 95% of the clothes you can buy are horribly ugly anyways, and the lighting and shadows are just terrible, sometimes making it impossible to see what's going on. And the pre made character models for the real life golfers are just scary, and look like NPC's from an old RPG game. Again, this looks and feels like a game made around 2008 for the PS3, and not a great one. Its like a quickly slapped together mess they rushed to market.

But, I should have known better. I was always deeply disappointed with their football and baseball games, so this is just more of the same.

^I would likely bet money the graphics are better than the 2008 game you're bringing up. I am not saying the graphics are good (I haven't seen either), there's just so little chance they are all that comparable. There's been too much advancement.

With that out of the way, I've been playing No Man's Sky. I was really into the discovery at first, but now I am not sure. It's a lot of the same and I am finding it difficult to upgrade my ship and exosuit (less so on the latter). I'm still playing it, I am just not sure how long I will stick it out. I may take a break ad come back in a few months.

I am also playing Outriders. Questionable story (implementation at least) not withstanding, I find the gameplay to be a lot of fun. I do have a problem with how many crashes I am getting though. In a week, I have had the game crash (or disconnect) on me close to a dozen times, probably in about the same number of hours.

I've played No Man's Sky twice, once a little after launch, and once again last year. I enjoyed my second go around a lot more than the first, but the game is still too frustrating for me. To me, building places and exploring should be a lot more user friendly than they are. Its a frustrating and lonely experience a lot of the time. I'm planning on giving it another go later on with the PS5.

As far as the golf game, I might be using a bit of hyperbole, but truly, the graphics are pretty bad. Maybe not as bad as a mid-lifecycle PS3 game as I suggested. I was mainly using that because it was the last comperable game I've played. However, I would have expected a lot more improvement from that point to now, 13 years later, at the very end of the next console's lifecycle. If you look at videos from the first Tiger Woods game on the PS4 back in 2013 and this one, I would argue that the graphics on the 8-year old game were better. And those games offered a lot better experience overall than the 2K one does. Its pretty bare bones.
