Barry over at the Herald has posted some info about the roster. I thought it would be worth posting some threads to discuss the Dolphins roster at the various positions.

    This is the DL thread.

Here's what Barry shared (THIS LINK for the full article):

"▪ The Dolphins face a tough call about whether to offer a new deal to impending unrestricted free agent Davon Godchaux or seek a new backup defensive tackle in free agency or the draft.

Godchaux started 42 games in four seasons for Miami, including the first five this past season, before a biceps injury ended his season. Raekwon Davis took over the starting job and is unlikely to relinquish it in 2021, even if Godchaux returns.

A source close to Godchaux said he expects the Dolphins to approach him about a new contract, but that the sense is that he might get more money elsewhere."

This is a move that the Dolphins of old would make all day long. Godchaux is good, but the more he gets paid, and the deeper into his contract he goes, the less I would want him on my team. I loved having him under a rookie deal. I thought he was a steal, but with a contract comes expectations.

The other thing is that I legitimately think Flo is a defensive genius. Look what he did with Zach Sieler, and also, don't forget what he was able to get out of John Jenkins. The man knows what he is looking for and he is exceptional at finding it. Let him fire two mid round picks at DL, and I feel confident that at least one would hit, and I wouldn't be shocked if they both wound up hitting.

Save that money for some offensive weapons.

I like your thinking but our pass rush just didn't seem to be getting there last season. It just seemed way too many 3rd and longs were converted when the rush was just anemic. I get that our 3rd down efficiency was good on paper, but watching the games it just didn't seem that way.

That’s exactly why I’d like to see a pass rusher with 18 or our 2nd round picks. Our fastest path to the super bowl is to make this defense elite and bring our offense along.

Everytime I see high priced free agent pass rusher I think Mario Williams. Mario Williams. Mario Williams.

True that. But he's a very good LB. Just depends on the price.

I think the biggest thing isn't so much adding guys is it is getting more from guys already on the roster(which is probably why Marion Hobby is in Cincy).

You've got three IDL who have a lot of potential in terms of pass rush who really haven't delivered. Wilkins hasn't lived up to expectations there, and Zach Sieler and Raekwon Davis have a lot of physical talents are left untapped.

You also didn't get really anything from Emmanuel Ogbah and Shaq Lawson when they lined up in the B-gap, and that's a big part of the defense.

Maybe they want to invest at DE and develop a guy who Ogbah and Lawson are under contract, but I can't see them spending too much at IDL.

Don't Ogbah and Lawson each have 1 year left before we need to either re-sign or replace? And if Ogbah puts up similar sack totals, he won't be cheap.

Developing DE/Edge talent is important, pressuring the QB is important. Having those guys on the edge who can play the run well while also getting after the QB? Priceless.

Goddam shame we don't have a Chase Young, a Noda, Nick Chubb type in the draft this year. Would have been a no brainer.

I think Godchaux is one of those players who is going to get a shock in Free Agency.

The reduction in the salary cap is going to have a real impact upon a lot of players. If you're a blue chip FA, I expect you won't notice a difference, but guys like Godchaux may find that the market really isn't there for their services, as many teams scramble to stay under the new cap.

Either way he's JAG in my eyes and easily replaceable via the draft or free agency, if required.

I don't think the Dolphins are interested in pure edge rushers. This isn't a defense that revolves around taking the best possible edge rusher and finding ways to put them in positions to maximize their pass rush. There is dirty work that needs to be done- defensive ends need to be able to play inside of the tackles, and not just as 3rd and 5+ rushers in pure passing situations in NASCAR packages or whatever. OLBs have to be able to contribute in coverage.

On the other hand, everyone and their mother is switching to a Pete Carroll-style 1-gap 4-3 Under front that is going to be looking for dedicated 1-techniques. That's really where Davon Godchaux is a good fit, and I think it's possible that he finds himself in demand for one of those guys and maybe not breaking the bank all things considering but he's going to find someone who will pay him more than the Dolphins will be willing.

That’s why I’d love to see us take Zaven Collins at 18 or 36 depending on where he’s graded.

Legitimate question? Zipper up? Or Zipper Down?

I see this defense as a lot like the old 53 D. The amoeba, 2DL, and those kind of looks scream the need for LB's, and Bigger S, and OLB/DE tweeners with a couple Island boys on the outside. I see speed and strength and smarts being valued more than size and stats. Wilkins Ogbah and a true NT (Wilfork Seymour types) is all the DL you need, and back ups of course, so Sielr and Davis, toss up between God and Law. That's a tuff call.
I think our LB crew needs a MLB type Captain, if not typical MLB position in every formation, and I'd take a S in that role depending on who has the best eyes.
