I finished the third season of Disenchantment on Netflix. It continues to trend in a much more linear, dark and serious tone from what I expected going in. I like it, and its compelling to watch, but its evolved more into a fun adventure show than a comedy. And unlike The Simpsons or Futurama, you absolutely have to watch the episodes in order.

I watched season three of Disenchantment. I don't know why I watch it. I hated everything with the King, that wasn't funny and just annoying. I do like the lizard ex wife character, probably the funniest character on the show. The son is annoying and the marriage plot was not funny. Bean can be funny sometimes but the mystery is over drawn out and I want some actual pay off. I don't understand the sex cult characters plot, they switch allegiances. Elfo still sucks and is mostly unfunny. Lucy did practically nothing this season.

I feel like I watch the show because I love Futurama and early Simpsons.

Due to WandaVision I started to check out Fresh Off The Boat on Hulu.

That show is hilarious. I am really enjoying it. The character of Evan is really funny. Constance Wu is a great comedic actress.

She was really good in Crazy Rich Asians. That's such a fun movie. I haven't seen anything else she's done yet.

She also went to high school right down the road from where I used to work, which is kind of cool.

One of the problems of Falcon and The Winter Soldier is that it came out at the same time as Invincible, and Invincible is not getting the love it deserves.

I am not comparing the two since they are so different, just saying I wish more people were talking about Invincible. It is great.

It is like The Boys if it was made with cleverness and maturity. I know some people don't like animation, but it allows them to do so much with the story.

It is violent. If you are squeamish to violence this show is not for you.

    I really like it.

Thanks for the warning. Im incredibly squeamish, so its absolutely not for me.

I've been watching Resident Alien on Sci Fy. Its cute and well done. Alan Tudyk has been one of my favorite actors for a long time and he does a good job, but theyve done a pretty good job of making it an ensemble cast and making sure that a lot of them have some depth.

you are welcome. It is almost a spoiler for the first episode because most of it looks like a standard super hero coming of age story and then BAMN! brains and blood and intestines everywhere.

Just watched Castlevania Season 4 and wow, that was a satisfying ending.

Lose threads from season 3 have been wrapped up and everything tied up nicely.

Probably one of the best ending episodes I have seen in a series.

I finished the second season of Lost in Space on Netflix. Like the first season, it is an extremely, extremely well made show. The production values are absolutely the highest of any TV show I've ever watched, including the new Marvel shows on Disney+. The acting is very good, and generally each episode is like a 45 minute A-/B+ Hollywood movie.

The only thing that I don't enjoy is that every minute of every episode, the characters are in near constant peril and risk of doom. The show never takes the foot off the gas, and its always jumping from one predicament directly into another. This is even the case when there are three separate storylines going on at the same time. Usually when that's the case, a show or movie will have one of them be light hearted to change it up and give the audience a break.

The constant "jumping the shark" nearly each episode has become the norm. I had to stop watching Yellowstone and couple other shows due to the level of ridiculousness.

Well, in this particular case its not rediculous or crazy stuff. It just doesn't stop coming. Their pacing could be better. I know that it's a matter of cost, but 20 episodes with the same amount of action and peril and more dialogue, exploration, intrigue, mystery ect would have been better than 10 jam packed ones.

One of my favorite series is the 50's - 70's period cop drama, Endeavor, on Prime.

Shaun Evans is fantastic as an Oxford University drop out who's looked down upon by his Oxford peers for dropping out and becoming a Copper, and by his Cop peers who see him as too smart, too aloof, and too moralistic for his own good.

Sort of a "What if Sherlock Holmes had actually been a cop" theme.

I finished watching the 2nd half (another 5 episodes) of the first season of this last week. It's a fun watch, hopefully they renew it for a 2nd season. I'm sure it was reported that it was the highest watched non-English language show on Netflix, so I imagine a renewal is likely.

I watched the first five episodes of Masters of The Universe.

It is amazing what whiny little entitled babies get mad at now of days.

The show is like a toned-down version of Castlevania. I found it enjoyable and since I watched He-Man at the age of five and owned a lot of the toys, it was a nostalgic treat. Even had the battle damage armor.

I watched He-Man when it was new in the 80s too, but even then I saw it as being lame and inferior to a lot of the other shows of the day. Same with the toys. Though it was kind of fun that you could take them apart and mix and match parts to create new guys.

I wasn't planning on giving the new show any of my time.

I started watching The Mandalorian, and really like it so far (as I expected that I probably would). The production quality is equal to a high end movie, and the direction and cinematography are excellent. They're telling a terrific story without all that much dialogue, which can be easy to mess up.

Watching Squid Game on Netflix and man this is some really f'd up sh**.

Not in a like a typical horror way - the violence and such is presented very straightforward. It's the way it's presented in the story that's being told, just very brutal. The dubbing (and subsequent English voice acting) isn't very good, but the story is intense and the whole thing is very well crafted. Good writing and directing, good sound. Super dystopian type of stuff, power of money, people's desperation affecting risk taking, rich preying on poor - if those types of things/social commentary float your boat, it's a show for you (assuming you can get past the voicing/dubbing, or watching in Korean with subs).

It gets somehow better and worse. Like from an artistic standpoint, it's amazing stuff. But goddam it's just brutal and DOESN'T STOP.

I came to post about Squid Games too. The best way I can describe it is the South Korean Hunger Games. It has English voice-overs and of course it's a South Korean series, so it's not like American shows at all....but I liked that about it seeing the different culture, interactions, etc. I really, really enjoyed it!

Honestly, we could spend a month discussing all the nuances of that show and what actually happened- it was easily one of my favorite series since the pandemic.

I'm watching a similar Netflix series now called "Alice in Borderland." Nowhere near as good but worth a watch if you like that sort of thing. This one's more like an "Asian Saw" movie (but it's a series).

I intentionally avoided the Hunger Games reference, though it's not completely off the wall. They both have deeply dystopic themes of inequality, poverty and gross capitalistic excess.

Hunger games is a bit more broad based with he whole district thing and destruction of America. Squid Game is just straight up exploitation set in our modern world riffing off the old "rich man hunts poor man" trope. Kind of a really super shady gladiatorial thing, but the combatants are just desperate people locked into a cycle of poverty.

Its also WAY more brutal, whereas HG had to sanitize a bit to get the PG13 rating.

I do agree the cultural aspect was interesting, but also in how different cultures have similar problems.

    Sounds more like Battle Royale.

It is an old Japanese movie about a bus full of school children who are kidnapped, put on an island, and forced to fight to the death on live television for political/economic reasons.

Great movie if you haven't seen it.

I haven't seen that one, but from what I have heard, yeah.

Squid Game just did a good job transcending location/being a foreign film and exploring universal themes, many of which are extra relevant in the US right now.

The other thing that Squid Game did well was overall pacing and creating unbelievable tension. You learn things mostly as the players do, so you get shocked as they do, you feel the tension as they do, you see inevitable but brutal and heartbreaking results at the same time as they do, so it becomes just a series of gut punches.

They also did a great job at continually raising the stakes through each event.

The biggest issues I had were iffy dubbing (and I hear the sub version is similarly iffy in translation), some of the side plots seemed extraneous and took away focus on the main people. I'd especially have liked more background on some of the women characters, who often didn't get the depth of the guys despite turning in great acting performances.

If you are a Star Trek fan you have to watch Lower Decks. Just finished the second season and the finale of the second season is up there with any of my favorite episodes of Star Trek.

This show does a great job of both celebrating and lampooning Star Trek.

I did not like the first episode however, I read an article by a Trekkie on why he likes it and gave it a second chance because of his article. I am happy I did. Love the show.

The second season is even better than the first. I am looking forward to season 3.

Watched the first season (another is in production but not out) of Alice in Borderland. Like Squid Game it's a foreign media, this time Japanese rather than Korean, but again you will either need to be fluent, use subs or listen to the dubs. Dub is, as per usual, not great, but the show is interesting.

It's not as dystopic or as just outright brutal as Squid Game, but is still a fairly violent romp as the main character gets pulled into a game world where he has to solve (and survive) mysterious game challenges as he attempts to investigate the world, how he (and others) came to be there, who is running it and try to group up with other survivors.

Kind of like a more violent, gamer oriented, Japanese version of Lost.

Anyone else a fan of the original Cowboy Bebop anime? Thoughts on the upcoming Netflix live action remake? I've intentionally held off watching the trailer for awhile but finally did. I'm cautiously optimistic, cause it's a damn big legacy to live up to. Have to say, the trailer was absolutely packed with gems and callbacks to the anime, so it's nice to see that it will at least start in familiar territory.

Others have already mentioned Squid Game, and with all the praise it's been getting, I finally got round to watching it over the last few nights. I watched it with subtitles as I don't like watching dubbed shows. There's been a lot of people saying the subtitling is really bad, but not knowing Korean, I didn't know one way of another and it didn't spoil my viewing of the show. The amount of times they supposedly say "gosh" didn't seem very realistic to me though (it's not that they don't want to use swear words, as there's F-bombs and other swear words in the subtitles too)! From what I've read about subtitling, Netflix translators don't get paid a lot so it's not always the best quality, and translating always runs into problems when there's not a direct translation that really works, both in words and in how they have to try and fit the sentence lengths in the subtitles so that the viewer can read them before the scene moves on. Basically it's never going to be 100% accurate, so you just have to hope it doesn't spoil the viewing too much.

I really enjoyed it, the acting for the most part is extremely good, and some of the scenes are heart-wrenching, the marbles episode "Gganbu" in particular. My favourite character gets killed before the end, which was gutting, but with a game where there's only supposed to be one winner it was always likely to be so.

Almost sure there will be a second season, after the success the first has been. Just hope that the fact the show creator only really intended one season and doesn't have a real plan yet for a second doesn't mean it will end up resulting in diminishing returns.
The North Korean defector/pickpocket was my favourite character, and her scenes in the marbles episode with the other girl were tremendous. Was really disappointed that she got impaled by the glass in the second to last game, which ended up getting her killed in the end

I really enjoyed Squid Game like the rest of you, and was late to watching it because I'm adverse to hype. Then I realized South Korea is absolutely killing it lately with most of their movies and shows. If there are any zombie fans here then I encourage watching Kingdom which is another South Korean vehicle. I enjoyed both the show and the original prequel movie, though I fear it was trending towards fantastical a little bit at the end. We'll see what seasons 3 and 4 look like. Watch the first two seasons before you watch the prequel movie.

Bebop is my favorite anime and still, to this day, remains one of a kind. The live action show will not be as good but I'm still very excited and optimistic about it. I like the cast and I think the art direction and vibe in the trailers, thus far, is spot on. It does need to be a little bit darker though, as a whole. I'm also wondering how the episodes will be structured. I saw Pierrot Le Fou in the trailer (one of my favorite episodes of the anime) and he doesn't show up until llaaaaatteeee in the cartoon.

I could be entirely wrong, but it seems like a somewhat direct 1 for 1 anime to live recreation, probably with dialogue/action scenes and such done a little differently to better suit the live action format. Lots of callbacks to the OG anime to suggest they might do the full lineup.

Right. It's just weird that they haven't teased Ed (introduced within the first 8ish episodes of the show) but they have teased Pierrot Le Fou, who is involved in an episode closer to the 20ish mark if memory serves.
