i just need to vent... but i was trying to register at another site for discussion. they had a rule under the "register" process, that you cannot use "free" email as hotmail or gmail to register. (i pay for my hotmail for the storage, but whatever). they say "use your ISP email" to register. well i don't have an ISP email. i'm sure many don't. not everyone has the ability to, or even gets issued one. in my case i share a place with like 4 people... someone might have one, but its not me. when i was younger i lived with my parents. i'm sure they had it, but again not me. at one point, when i was in the military, i didn't even have internet. i just used the free internet at the library to go online. again, no ISP address. so i used my work email. it turned me down, saying that the IP address i'm registering from doesn't match up with my work email i submitted. i have NO idea what that means, but i'm guessing it has to do with the fact that i work for a large company with thousands of people, so there probably is a crazy network of weird gateways and servers and whatnot. my point is this - why make it THIS difficult to register? to prevent trolls? you think trolls can't get ISP email addresses? i understand what they are probably trying to avoid, but its the worst idea ever. i'm sure plenty of honest, innocent, non-troll people probably have been unable to register or contribute because of stupid ****ing rules like this. sorry, had to vent.
The Gang Green has the same stupid rule. The only thing I can think of is they think it will prevent people from signing on to talk smack? Im sure they know it will prevent alot of people frow joining who aren't serious fans of that team.
i'm sure it will prevent some serious local fans of said team as well.... like i said, not everyone that is on the internet has an ISP email address.
there are other, more effective registrant obstacles to that.... such as captchas and moderator-approving of new accounts.
