In recent weeks, NFL pundits have been feverishly speculating about potential landing spots for Houston Texans quarterback Deshaun Watson, with many pointing to Miami as a likely destination.

The 26-year-old is a three-time Pro Bowler who should be in the prime of his career. However, he was ruled out of every game in the 2021 season due to “non-injury reasons/personal matter”—or at least, that’s what the Texans called it. The reality is far more grim.

The Daily Beast has exclusively obtained one of these settlement offers from Watson to an accuser—who said she refused to sign, turning him down. The woman has requested anonymity.

Yep, that mess isn’t ending any time soon its not about money for some of those women.

The news news coming out this week-
    • Watson tried to settle before the trade deadline
    • 18 of 22 were content on settling in October, but four said no because it included a non-disclosure
    • One of the girls agreed to settle for $100k, but that may or may not be the final settlement offer to everyone
    • There are 10 criminal complaints against Watson that will be sent to the grand jury next month
    • The Houston prosecutor will explain what charges they may seek in the next few weeks
    • The NFL may still hand down punishment, regardless of anything else
For those who don't know law, a prosecutor sends charges to a grand jury before a bench warrant is issued by a judge. The prosecutor usually won't take this step if he feels there's not enough to get a conviction, but in high-profile cases they may send it anyway just to get the burden off their own shoulders...it's almost like a doctor 2nd opinion. So this doesn't mean charges are definitely coming, but it does make me think there's something there.

Again, the potential charges should be announced early February, but the grand jury has to agree in order for there to be a trial. They can technically arrest him before that but with all the publicity, it would be that DA's career if it got dismissed.

Can the charges be withdrawn by the prosecutor or is what's done is done now and the process is in motion?

The prosecutor can do whatever he/she wants- they don't have to seek charges if they don't think the case is strong enough. But once they send it to the grand jury, the process is started and it's too late to back out. If the grand jury says to move forward, it's in the system and assigned a pre-trial court date. The prosecutor could drop charges later but without a good reason, they're in big trouble with the media and the city. It would be career suicide for a case this public.

It might also help to know that a "grand jury" is just regular citizens with jury duty. People are elected for the year and they meet once a month to look at all the pending arrests or accusations to see if there's enough evidence. This is often seen as a technicality since many districts will review hundreds of cases per day, so they're not really looking at everything like they would at a trial. It's more, "Was the arrest legal? Is there evidence of a crime?" If yes, they move to the next one. There's no witness testimony or anything like that.

Again though, this is a special circumstance...so different rules may apply. Arresting a celebrity puts tons of pressure on the city to get it right, and they're basically putting their career on the line since it's an elected office. That's why this has dragged on for so long, it has to go up the hierarchy to make sure everyone supports this. So if it goes to the grand jury, there are some real charges there with real evidence. The prosecutor is probably secretly hoping that it gets dismissed though and he doesn't have to be the face of this.

One more thing to consider- if the grand jury says yes and this moves forward, a good lawyer can stall this process for years. And if that happens, I really think Watson's career is over, regardless whether he's found innocent or guilty. Once he's arrested, it truly is game over.

Teams being willing to trade for him while this is still going on tells you all you need to know about whether anyone thinks the league would punish him like that. At worst he is someones starter week 1 in 2023.

Yeah, the NFL will throw him on the Commissioner's Exempt List for 6-17 games and as far as they're concerned, all will be right in the world. If they let Greg Hardy play, they're going to let DeShaun Watson play. They may even let him play immediately since he already sat out a season with pay.

We should not be making ANY moves for any players till we have a coach. They need to be part of the process if you want a successful candidate they don't want you forcing a player on them and their carrier hanging on it. If you do get a guy who is ok with it they are probably a bad coach.

I don't see them not suspending him. As you said he was paid and it was the Texans choice not to play him. I don't see how that could be sold as time served.

It's the NFL. They'll figure out some kind of "justification" for him not being suspended if they want to.

Players collect their checks on the Commissioner's Exempt List. I could easily see the players association arguing that making a top 5 QB a healthy scratch for a season fulfills the purpose of the CEL. And I could see an arbitrator siding with them if they do.

In the NFL, character* is required.
Take a knee on the sideline? GTFO, you anti-American commie bastard. Can't have the inmates run the prison.
Punch and knock your fiancée out on an elevator? Four games suspended. Oops. Where'd that video come from? Let's change that to an effective lifetime ban.
Beat the crap out of you live-in girlfriend, drag her by the hair, and then throw her on a sofa full of weapons before being convicted for assault? Take some time off to think about it and then sign with the team of your choice.
Mislead your teammates about your immunization status and put their (and their families') health at risk? Take a fine, miss a game and we'll call it even. Oh, now you say you might sit out the Super Bowl to own the libs? Might have to make sure that scenario doesn't come up.

*It could be good or bad.

Even if all of these charges were to magically disappear, with Flores gone, there’s NO WAY he comes to Miami.

Watson wanted to come to Miami BECAUSE of Flores

This in particular fascinates me since Rodgers went on the Pat MacAfee show and did a five minute rant on how it didn't come from anyone close to him. He even challenged the legit news outlets that shared it and said they should know better (I'm thinking it was Florio, but can't remember).

Then about ten minutes later, those same news outlets called the show and said, "Uhh, Rodgers told us that himself...in person...in a long rant. And he said it several times."

Anyway, I hope Green Bay makes it to the Super Bowl just to see what happens...it will be a media circus regardless. Rodgers is a weirdo so that could actually have been his plan on how to retire.

That would be a great train wreck to observe, but I don't want the Packers to make it to the Super Bowl because I want to keep him as an example of how even a top-5 QB can't be counted on to be enough to get your team there along with the many greats who either made it once or never sniffed it.

I forgot what exactly it is about, however, there was a time when he went on MacAfee and said he never said a thing. I think it was when he called out a female reporter. When there was a video of him doing that exact thing during a press conference.

With the way he is acting it makes me wonder if Rogers is going through a mental breakdown.

He is just going to buy off his accusers?

I hope he does settle all the civil suits against him. (So they get money).

But they prosecute him criminally anyways.

I was bothered when it was reported that Ross encouraged him to settle prior to the trade deadline. As if settling with your accusers makes the accusations less abhorrent. The fact that so many teams are willing to ignore it tells me all I need to know about the NFL's stance on ethics. The fact that no reporter asked Ross or Flo or any other GMs, owners, or coaches allegedly pursuing him if that sent a negative message to their daughters tells me all I need about the media's enabling of such behavior.

CEL lets the League make a player a healthy scratch. The player gets their game check, and credit for the game, same as if a team decided not to dress a player. It's in the CBA. I cannot see an arbitrator siding with the Union for the League doing something that was explicitly negotiated.

You may well be right. But the fact that he was a healthy scratch for the entire season for nothing football-related makes me think a grievance might succeed. If they had a valid football-related reason for doing it, he wouldn't have been paid.

I'm the furthest thing from someone who knows anything about the CBA, but something about 4-5 teams scrambling for his services makes me believe he's not going to have a lot of discipline from the league. Those teams are expecting him to play early and often.

    Oh, by the way:

    A. Brown keeps getting teams to give him money. It's sad, but if someone is great, that is all that matters. Personally, I am out if they make a serial sexual predator the face of the franchise. Cannot cheer for him.

If we get Watson, I'll be much more of a casual fan than I am right now. I really do not want to see that happen. Part of it is the price we'd have to pay, but 90% of the reason is due to his situation. It says a lot that teams are willing to sell their souls while the situation is still being resolved.

I'm way out of market and have to resort to *extraneous methods* to view the games. If they trade for him, I'll follow the games through game tracker. The good news for most fans is that I'm sure that the moment I jump off will be the time when Dolphin Dynasty 2.0 begins, so there's that.
