Red Wolves, with fans howling in the stands after big plays? Such a missed opportunity. I don't believe the copyright issues excuse for a second. Not after we just had the San Antonio Commanders.
I think it was more about the image of the wolf - there are about 500 teams with wolf logos/mascots/nicknames. How do you differentiate from all those without someone suing you? Or maybe they were too lazy to draw a wolf, lol
They shouldn't have changed the name. Social pressure like that ebbs and flows. Just wait it out. Washington Redskins has been the name since 1937, so a good bit of history was lost there.
To me it pays homage to the Indians. Never a fan of Washington Redskins, but always liked their name.
Redskins is a terrible name. Even without the obvious issues, it is just stupid. Like the Whitesocks and Redsocks. Should have been changed years ago. The fact that it took this long is embarrasing. No history has been lost. It is all there.
You think it's racist to have one of our top attack helicopters named the "Apache"? Naming something after Indians isn't racist except in the minds of a smaller percentage of people. For most of us it's actually a way to acknowledge American Indians are part of US history. I think it would be more racist if we NEVER used American Indian names. That would be like saying they didn't exist. Anyway to each his own, but I see these names as acknowledging US history.
Well they were the white stockings because that's what they wore. It was later shortened to White Socks. Not everything has to do with race even though many are invested in tribalism even when there is no tribe..
Yes. It is kind of messed up that they are named that. They shouldn't use American Indian names in sports. Sports isn't the place to "Keep Native Americans alive." However, if they were to honor native Americans they should be more like the Seattle Seahawks and actually respect their culture or the Florida State Seminoles who work with the local tribes.
I was thinking who would be their mascot be Captain Crunch? But yeh he probably be compared to a slave commander since he's white..
Didn’t the former Redskins do the same and of what I know the native Americans didn’t take offense in that name…
No, there are plenty of native Americans who found that name highly offensive and have been trying to get that name changed for years. There is no need to keep that name.
Did some research and my memory was wrong. Always liked their logo and to bad, that they didn’t just rename the franchise and did something similar what Florida State is doing at least from what you’re saying.
I watched a Pat MaCafee clip on this, and they were chanting "Let's go Commies!" since most people won't bother to say "let's go commanders". That's probably going to be a thing, making it more racist and hateful than the Redskins by far. So I change my vote. I liked it...but it's a horrible name.
All US Army helicopters are named for American Indians UH1 Iroquois CH37 Mojave CH47 Chinook OH58 Kiowa UH60 Blackhawk AH64 Apache RAH66 Comanche Yes, this retired soldier is showing off lol…but I find it so incredible that I agree with you completely on the Washington Redskins name. A lot of history destroyed in the name of not offending the un-offended…only those who feel guilty for feeling guilty. The Commanders?
I really don't understand how people don't get why Washington's previous name was offensive. There have been many Native Americans who said that Redskin is a slur.
Since I can look it up with Google, the history is not being destroyed. Also, I already looked it up. I don't care. It really doesn't matter why something happened in the 1930s.
It's honestly astonishing. Anyway, like the Cleveland Guardians baseball team name change, and frankly the Titans of many moons ago, it's pleasant in a very generic way. Like the kind of team name that would be suggested by a sports videogame when you start a new team, or that you would find in a movie or something. I personally thought the Redtails was the best choice, but I thought in general keeping the red part would have been neat. Red Wolves, Redhawks.
Pretty cool name but holy crap was that ad or whatever just absolutely way too dramatic! That music was stupid! I'm just getting older and I can't stand that crap. "DUN DUN DUN DUN DUN WE ARE COMMANDERS" I get it, you gotta try and hype people up. Ron Rivera screaming in the locker room was when it really got stupid. It is a cool name, but I think Commando's would have been way cooler. I mean, such a subtle difference Commander vrs Commando, but way cooler sounding...."Terry McLaurin goes FULL COMMANDO IN THE END ZONE." They should just go ahead and sign Antonio Brown right now.
Once history is lost, a society becomes lost. When you forget who you were as a people, you’re doomed to become the same people again. So by completely disregarding the fact the Washington Redskins were named to HONOR the native Americans on the team, including the first NFL Native American coach in Lone Star Dietz erases a historical fact that a people who the first in America and the LAST to receive US citizenship. That little eraser to get rid of a name that some find offensive also erases the reminder of a people who were truly offended by this nation and it’s history. But…thankfully I’m a student of history, so I am able to see the absurdity in people tirades of the personal offense.
History is not lost. No one is trying to erase the history of the Washington Commanders. If it was named the Washington Lone Stars, that would have been cool. Why didn't they rename it to that? And if you are not offended by things that happened in history, then you are not growing as a person. We should strive to be better now than we were in the past. Humanity should always strive to be better and grow. If you were a true student of history, you would know that changing the name is not an eraser.
Since history often stirs political debate, I’m just going to leave this at that. I could discuss this ALL day long.
There is no need for politcal debate. History exists. Houston Oilers are remembered even though their named was changed to the Tennesee Titans. They are not erased.
