So ive been thinking about how the fallout of this is going to impact the team and it got me thinking: OWNER Is Steven Ross forced to sell the team? If he does, does the new owner come im here and clean house top to bottom? COACH If we announced a hire last week we might be ok, but this dumpster fire will certainly set us back a few years as we might hire anyone who will take the job. And have to reset again in 3 years. Harbaugh ran back to UM with his tail between his legs. What coach will want to sign with this org knowing we are a mess with potential for league punishment and a media circus? You have to think coaches are contemplating that if Ross is forced to sell, that they may be on the hot seat after a year given the new owner didn't hire them. FREE AGENTS First off, our own free agents: Are Players that were considering resigning and hoping to stay here long term going to want to run for the hills? Are players that were Flores supporters before the firing or who believe Ross wanted to tank their a year of their limited careers, going to request trades as they no longer want to be part of this organization? External free agents: who they hell is going to want to come here if they believe Ross doesn't give a crap about thier careers? If we hire a last minute unqualified coach because of this, will it deter potential talented free agents? DRAFT Will the league take our first round pick or more if they rule that we were cheating or damaging the integrity of the game? All of these things could impact our team. People here might want out, other talent wont want to come, we might lose high draft picks and with that hallowed roster we might have an inexperienced unqualified coach to try to steer the ship and develop what's left. Hopefully that wouldn't all compound at once. What do you guys think are realistic impacts that will happen after these recent events? Interested to hear what you think.
It's hard to imagine this doesn't have a significant impact on the franchise. These things are complicated so I don't know how likely it is but it seems to me as though there's a lot of reason for the league find a nice smooth way for Ross to move on from owning the Dolphins. Either that or we're in for more years of bad football. I would imagine that many coaches will not want to come to Miami. I would also imagine that the Dolphins players will start to doubt and even despise Ross. You can't have that sort of distrust at the highest levels and succeed. There's also the fact that we're currently without a HC. It's maybe the right time for Ross to exit. Let a new owner come in and create a fresh start. Can you imagine if the Dolphins simply can't attract a new HC? I suppose they could try to promote from within in order to field a team, but that's no solution. I'm not sure the NFL would want a truly lame duck franchise acting as a placeholder. They're going to have to take a look at this and find out if this is all just lies and bitterness from Flores. If it is then they'll need to establish that quickly and confirm for people that Ross, Grier and the Dolphins are okay. With our history this is going to cause some further damage, but they're going to try to see what can be salvaged. If Ross did pay his HC to lose and get angry because Flores had them winning... then the Dolphins under Ross will be tarnished beyond repair. A broken foundation on which nothing good can be built. We're already there, I think. But this might be the proverbial straw - except it's not a straw, it's a heavy steel girder.
Florio on Eisen with a description about the process involved in the league resolving this - as from 2:33:
I don't see how this whole thing doesn't set us back at least a season. I hate to say it, but it all comes down to talent and that's mainly at the quarterback position. A wildfire could be going on all around him, but you get a superstar quarterback and some decent blocking and the outside world won't matter. Yeah, I know...team sport, but talent wins and without that we are screwed. Now with all this extra drama we are thoroughly screwed and some wholesale changes top to bottom will be made. Maybe Ross will sell, but I doubt it. This will be ongoing. At this point we're either below or on par with teams like Washington, Detroit, and Chicago. What a shame, but again, a franchise quarterback makes ALL of this go away. From the Ross bribes, to Flores pulling the race card, the fluctuation of OCs, all of it is erased with a superstar quarterback.
This whole episode has cast a large shadow over the organisation. But some good might come from it if Ross is forced out
I think it makes a huge difference if Ross was forced to sell the team the new owner would probably clean house meaning anybody who is hired this year maybe out of a job next year what self-respecting coach would want to uproot his entire family move them into a drama situation only to have the rug pulled out from underneath of them and looking for a job again in 12 months I’m honestly really scared for this team if we don’t land McDaniel I think we could be looking at bottom barrel scrapers for coaches for the next 12 months
I think the only thing that will affect the franchise is if they take draft picks away or it makes Ross start selling faster.
It has a very bad impact on the franchise and we will likely hire someone within the organization and try to go through the search again next year. the candidates right now are thinking, how do i get a black athlete to buy in on the Dolphins. Look at the initial reaction around the league and media when Flores was let go. There are many who respect Flores. Some probably think hes full of ****. But trust me, this job has some added bs that coaches dont want to deal with. with that said there’s only 32 of these jobs, and someone will take it for the pay increase even if its short term.
Just hope Flores keeps doing interviews because he sounds dumber and dumber with each one. Only a matter of time before he starts contradicting himself and backtracking.
That not being able to find a coach has been my fear all along, even before all this. A ton of bitterness for sure. He got his feelings hurt. I've not gotten jobs where they were forced to interview x number of people. Hurt my feelings, but I didn't sue for age discrimination.
Its been going on since Ross took ownership, why would it end now. The answer is simple, When Ross sells the team.
I'll add one thing- when you have the amount of money Ross does, there's very few things you can't buy. But one of those things is a legacy, how future generations will remember you in the history books. You might think Ross is a real estate mogul and that's enough, but something like this tarnishes all of that and Ross knows it. He's on the verge of losing his legacy because of an angry ex-employee. The fact that the media is talking about Flores and airing his side is huge; for something like this, that is the courts. Just look at the biggest news stories of the past two years- there was a lot to dispute, but public opinion mattered more than anything. With respected names siding with Flores in these initial interviews, it is a very big deal. I promise you that Ross is in a frenzy right now, and that his legal team is telling him to stay a million miles away from the media. To some of you, this is about innocence or guilt...who did what and were there any witnesses, etc. That stuff doesn't matter. What matters is Ross's legacy and what he'll do to protect it. PR 101 is to settle this quietly, to get it out of the media. We all learned that with DeShaun Watson when he could have settled for $50k over a year ago with one individual. If he did, we never hear this story, and our entire image of him changes. The accusations really do not matter here- it's about minimizing the fallout to protect Ross's legacy. The only sensible move is for Ross to step down- he has to. Maybe he realizes that tomorrow, or maybe he realizes that a year from now. But the longer it drags on, the more the media will try him in the court of public opinion and NOBODY is going to side against the black coach who's talking about racial injustice and being bribed by an owner to lose football games. It is literally career suicide, regardless of your actual opinion. Why? Because these two things were presented together (among other things) and most people would say, "Well, it's true, there's only one black head coach." Everyone knows the Rooney Rule is a technicality. So when you combine that with much more serious allegations, it's hard to initially dismiss one without the other. It was a very smart way to file this because it's very hard to defend against everything. If Ross acts fast, maybe he can give the team to his son or arrange for a fast sale. But as long as these allegations stand, they threaten to destroy the legacy he spent decades building. It's just a matter of how fast he realizes that.
It's ok if you don't understand. There are resources to help understand words and phrases, like a dictionary for instance. www.dictionary.com
I am 100% against cancel culture...but that doesn't really matter. What matters is how society perceives all of this. Let me know when you hear someone defending Ross other than his paid PR team. That would be a great first step.
Tiki Barber does business with Ross and said he had the most integrity of any businessman he ever worked with on his radio show. I'm trying to find the audio.
Sorry, that's not someone defending Ross on these allegations. That's someone saying Ross isn't racist. For the record, I don't think Ross is racist. I think he's elitist.
I'm sure he does have integrity- we're complex creatures. My point is that NOBODY is coming out saying that because they know Ross, they know he wouldn't pay a bounty of losing, he wouldn't meet with Brady on a yacht, etc. NOBODY. Why isn't Marino saying it? Why isn't Grier saying it? The only thing we've heard is that Ross is an upstanding guy. No one dares speak to these charges though because they want to stay as far away as possible. For instance, Ireland was on ESPB yesterday. The only thing he said was, "Ross gave us whatever assets we needed to be successful." That doesn't say anything at all.
This isn't 2020. That BLM and cancel culture thing hit a peak back then. It's slowly but certainly starting to wane, as most movements do. It's like that Redskins name thing. Just have to weather the storm. Not sure where we are exactly with this racial-outrage complex, but it's not going to be anywhere near as severe as 2020. So I think it's 50/50 whether Ross can just weather the storm and it's taken care of like it normally would be (in the courts or behind the scenes) or whether there's just enough momentum to push it over that threshold. We'll see. But one thing you won't see is a repeat of the suffocating 2020-type response. We're past that, and Flores won't be able to garner the same kind of following/support in public opinion as he might have back then. You'll see people starting to push back against him as the weeks go by, especially since this really has nothing to do with race (based on the reports that have come out). Give it some time.
Are we though? We're past that because there haven't been any headline stories. I agree, it's not as frenzied of a topic as it was last year, but I don't think we're to the point where we can say that stuff was resolved. I'd be surprised if a lot of organizations don't hop on the bandwagon here in the days/weeks to come. We can't talk politics though, so I'll stop there.
Honestly, I haven't read it. I will this weekend though. I would think the much larger takeaway in the Dolphins portion is that he was fired for being asked to throw football games and recruit Brady during the tampering period.
No it's 2022 where we're not going to be cowed by false accusations of racism as easily as in 2020. At least that's my prediction.
Good old Stephen Ross offering Brian Flores a solution to a problem that didn't even exist yet. Can't anyone do even the slightest research before writing an article?
I am hoping he takes the job honestly. He wasnt my first choice but he's better than what's left and has a potential upside if we strike gold. My fear is even if he takes the job and does good enough to stay that a nee owner would completely clean house or maybe keep him if he proves good enough but clean out grier and everyone else leaving us to have anither reset on player acquisition. I think there will just be a ripple effect of nothing but turnover and inconsistency
Hopefully if they remove ross they won't penalize the new team for actions of its old owner. If Ross isnt removed they might doc draft pics as a punishment. Maybe even multiple considering the tampering and intentional tanking. The saving grace might be that Flores never actually tool the money. Had we actually paid him and he lost games we would have been screwed. He was just possibly offering so he never actually committed the intended violation. I guess its all in hiw they see it maybe?
