I think it's so cool Peyton is having these types of conversations- I keep meaning to start watching it live. I sat there watching the video and realized that I wasn't even paying attention to the game, LOL.

Pretty sure Peyton Manning has identified him as the toughest defender to go against too

Peyton Manning has praised Zach Thomas in the past as the best linebacker hes ever faced… and then last year he says Ray Lewis was.. i guess when you work for espn you got to stroke each other out.

peyton would have to audible his plays several times before the snap because Zach knew what the play was and would re assign the defense.

Ray Lewis was better but Urlacher definitely was not imo, Zach should be in the HOF long time ago…

Here is the sad honest truth about players selected to the HoF. If you’re on a team that wins the Super Bowl, or are perennially going deep into the playoffs, you’re going to get selected a hell of a lot sooner than GREAT players that are on average to mediocre teams.

That’s just the sad political fact of HoF selections.

Still respect Kevin Mawae for shouting on Thomas is his Hall of Fame speech. Said something to the like of he was the toughest defender he ever played against and has no idea why he's not in here with him.

Did I ever tell my Zach Thomas story here?

I was with a few buddies at the Davie Ale House in my early 20's and we were shooting pool. They had a crazy special back in the day of like $4 pitchers, so we were young, dumb and fairly drunk.

As the night goes on, I get on a winning streak and hold the table 4-5 games in a row. This beefy white guy (Thomas) and two HUGE black guys (one was Armstrong, forget the other) were drinking at the bar and Thomas walks over and says, "We're playing next (meaning him and one of his friends)." He was much drunker than I was, but we were both 5'11" and around 225 and I'm thinking, if this goes sideways...I can definitely take this guy. I had no idea who he was and I had yet to notice who he was with.

Again, I was young, dumb and working on getting pretty drunk.

So I run my mouth, he runs his mouth and he comes at me aggressively. Nobody gets hit and we were separated almost instantly, their group goes out the door and we're also told we have to leave. I'm pleading my case that I didn't do anything wrong, and within one minute the police are there and dragging us outside. I had no idea what was going on...we just shoved each other a little bit...and we get outside to see several cop cars there.

We were told to stand by our car and wait. So we're just hanging out and a few minutes later, a covered golf cart pulls into the parking lot with a light flashing on top and the cops tell Thomas to hop on. It was Nova security, where the practice facility was, and he was escorted back to campus on a golf cart. Then the cops tells us to leave and not to come back- we're banned from the property.

Anyway, it was one of those "no harm, no foul" types of situations, but I actually hated Zach Thomas for his first few seasons in Miami before I finally started coming around. Then I became a huge fan realizing it was nothing personal that night. I can't help but wonder though how common stuff like that is in professional sports...the response time was incredibly fast.

I'm telling you though, I could have taken him! My friends would have had a very bad night though since Zach's friends were behemoths, LOL.

Two more games played over his career…
    375 more tackles…
    1 less Pro Bowl selection
    1 more All Pro selection

Sadly, when you look at the individual player, Thomas was far superior to Urlacher…and keep in mind I liked Urlacher. So why is Urlacher in and Thomas isn’t?

The Bears during Urlacher’e tenure went to the playoffs 3 years, losing the NFC Divisional game in 2001; lost the NFC Divisional game in 2005 and the pinnacle of appearing in and losing Super Bowl XLI the following year.

The Dolphins on the other hand…*sighs*…lost the AFC Wildcard game in 1997, lost the AFC Divisional game in 1998, lost the AFC Divisional game in 1999, lost the AFC Divisional game in 2000, lost the AFC Wildcard game in 2001. Thomas and the Dolphins appeared in the playoffs 5 years in a row and yet, Thomas has yet to be selected.

It would make “some” sense if the Bears were perineal playoff contenders and the Dolphins weren’t, but this isn’t the case.

The ONLY difference is Urlacher appeared in a Super Bowl and Thomas didn’t. If that’s the criteria now…Super Bowl appearances, then we had better never see another non Super Bowl player selected…no matter how incredible he is/was.

Don't they take 5 per year? There were 26 semi-finalists and 15 finalists. Don't they trim that down to 5 though? I'm not sure if he's in or not. Here's the others eligible:

The 2022 modern-era player finalists with their positions, years and teams, as announced on NFL Network:

    • Jared Allen, DE – 2004-2007 Kansas City Chiefs, 2008-2013 Minnesota Vikings, 2014-2015 Chicago Bears, 2015 Carolina Panthers
    • Willie Anderson, OT -- 1996-2007 Cincinnati Bengals, 2008 Baltimore Ravens
    • Ronde Barber, DB – 1997-2012 Tampa Bay Buccaneers
    • Tony Boselli, T -- 1995-2001 Jacksonville Jaguars, 2002 Houston Texans (injured reserve)
    • LeRoy Butler, S -- 1990-2001 Green Bay Packers
    • Devin Hester, PR/KR/WR -- 2006-2013 Chicago Bears, 2014-2015 Atlanta Falcons, 2016 Baltimore Ravens, 2016 Seattle Seahawks
    • Torry Holt, WR -- 1999-2008 St. Louis Rams, 2009 Jacksonville Jaguars
    • Andre Johnson, WR -- 2003-2014 Houston Texans, 2015 Indianapolis Colts, 2016 Tennessee Titans
    • Sam Mills, LB -- 1986-1994 New Orleans Saints, 1995-97 Carolina Panthers
    • Richard Seymour, DE/DT -- 2001-08 New England Patriots, 2009-2012 Oakland Raiders
    • Zach Thomas, LB -- 1996-2007 Miami Dolphins, 2008 Dallas Cowboys
    • DeMarcus Ware, LB -- 2005-2013 Dallas Cowboys, 2014-2016 Denver Broncos
    • Reggie Wayne, WR -- 2001-2014 Indianapolis Colts
    • Patrick Willis, LB -- 2007-2014 San Francisco 49ers
    • Bryant Young, DE/DT -- 1994-2007 San Francisco 49ers

That's a packed list. I could see any of them making it. Seymour is probably the only lock, IMO. And I say that knowing they've screwed Zach so many times already. With that being said, his career met or exceeded every one of the finalists'. I feel I can say that from an unbiased POV.

Okay, just found that they elect 4-8 per year, but I also saw this:

"The Pro Football Hall of Fame selection committee will meet Jan. 18 to select up to five modern-era players for induction into Canton. The full 2022 class will be unveiled Feb. 12 during the NFL Honors show the night before the 2022 Super Bowl."

It looks like it's up to 5 modern players and up to three prior era players, coaches, etc....that would make sense.

The three prior-era members are: former player finalist Cliff Branch, contributor finalist Art McNally and coach finalist Dick Vermeil.

If Zach gets in as a legacy in 10 years, it'll just further indict the process. His numbers, when compared to Urlacher's, prove that Urlacher was just a more media-hyped player in his career. They're doing the same thing to him that they did to Art Monk, and that was bad enough.

Zach was a player that opponents' game plans focused on every week. I really hope there's not some opinion circulating that he got JT's leftovers. I never heard this, but it's the only thing that makes sense at this point.

He basically has a 1 in 3 shot at this point with 15 left and them taking up to 5 modern-era players.

Side note- I saw Clay Matthews was a finalist last year, didn't make the cut and then he wasn't even a semi-finalist this season. So there's gotta be a lot of politics involved. Hester is the 1st special teams player making the finalist stage as well, which makes me think he will probably take one of the 5 slots.

I loved Devin Hester. But he was a dangerous guy who could impact any game on special teams. Zach was a dangerous guy who literally impacted every game on defense. Zach's fingerprints were all over the '90s. Like that Reddit post I attached, I guarantee Jests, Buffalol, Pats fans and those of pretty much every team that played us was more concerned about where #54 was than Hester. And that is sending no disrespect to Hester. I just think Zach's impact was much larger.

I don't know if it is controversial I think Hester gets in. He is the best returner of all time.

Looking at the list of players in the 15, the only other one I can see as a powerhouse is Andre Johnson. Nothing against the other players, they are all great, but none of them would be players I would make an argument as one of the best of all time.

When EA Sports tested a beta version of a Madden game that allowed users to play with teams from the past, a glitch resulted in Zach Thomas making literally every tackle for the Dolphins. Curious to find out why, they called Thomas and asked about it.

"That's not a glitch," Thomas told them.

One can only surmise that they blackballed Zach when he declared he’d donate his brain to CTE research when he passes.

there is no logical or statistical justification for him to have been kept out yet again.

I've not heard that one, but did read how his dad once accidentally backed the car right over Zach's head. When he heard the clump-clump, he pulled ahead, over Zach's head a 2nd time, before getting out to check what he backed over. Zach was none the worse for wear.
