Well today vs LEI was everything you wanted to see from LFC really. You had Mo and Elliott coming in and providing a spark already up 1-0 to get that second goal. We seemed to have the game in hand up that one goal but you just never know (Matip scares me always), so the second goal was needed. LEI didn't have much going forward though. Diaz had some bright moments. For his first start, he really looks to be a nice addition. He's going to give us some much needed depth on the front line. And you've still got Taki and Origi if needed.

Diogo Jota though... that song is in my head...

Ohhhh, he wears the number twenty...
He will take us to victory....

And when he's running down the left wing...
He cuts inside and scores for LFC.....

    He's a lad from Portugal
Better than Figo, don't you know ()
    Ohhhh, his name is Diogoooooooooooooooooooo

... special things are going to happen the rest of THIS season. We've got a new song to carry us... you go back and look at the last two big songs we had.... Conquered all of Europe... that got us the UCL Championship I believe... and the Firmino song... which got us the Premier League (I might be off by a year in my recollection but I don't care)... hey... how can we not win SOMETHING this season?

Everyone is healthy. Lets keep it that way and scorch this mfer...

Thought co MOTM with Jota was Virgil. He had a great game today. And Fabinho wasn't far behind (his counter press setup the 2nd goal)

Love this team as it is. Stay healthy and the CL trophy is a very realistic opportunity. And if we can at least make Man City feel some pressure that would be great.

This Norwich City game has been a total disaster through the first 50 minutes!

that was some game today... "only" the Carabao cup final at Wembley, of the four pieces of hardware, I suppose it's the least best.... but it still feels goooooooood!!! So happy to see Kepa sky it after he was trying to get in the minds of all the pk takers... some pk specialist he turned out to be LMAOOOOOOOOOO...But for a nil nil game... I don't think they get any better than that.

    Insane game.

We are still in all the other Cup races.

I'm a little concerned about the front 3. There needs to be more passing. There was early on in the season. But I do wonder how much they are focused on themselves scoring - would like to see Mo pass some more but I understand that as a striker the mentality has to be "I can score from anywhere."

I would be surprised if we beat MC at MC. But if we can keep winning just a few more we at least give ourselves a shot.

Really like the mix in the midfield. But it seems that Harvey Elliott is out of sorts relative to before his injury. They gave him a start and some minutes after he came back but now he's back on the bench.

Nevertheless, we at least see a lot of good things from Thiago (he does all the little things really well), Keita, et al.

Hopefully we get a good Champions League draw - but almost anyone we play at this point is going to be tough.

That injury to Trent really hurts. He is so crucial. And their really is no one to replace him on that side who does what he does.

Feels like Liverpool have been hit with more than their share of injuries the past couple of
    Years.

Nottingham Forest are no push over. On the positive side we have the international break before Watford, Benfica, and then Man City on April 10. 3 weeks. Hopefully we can get through without a loss (or keep it close with Benfica) and then he can be back at full speed vs Man City. Have to have him.

ouch yeah, i didn't know TAA was out until I read your post! I was checking the twitter feed and only went as far back as the UCL draw. yes, really fortunate to get a decent draw there for the QF and the SF as well (either Villareal or Bayern if we make it there). The other half of the quarters is much more difficult on paper.

Do you call back Neco Williams at RB whose on loan at Fulham? Can we get by with Milner/Gomez.... neither of which are right backs. Conor Bradley has had some nice moments with the young side when given the opportunity in those league cup games. Klopp mentioned a change of shape as a potential as well. Probably looking at a 3-4-3... with Ox on the right side of the midfield serving as help to the back three (I'd imagine Gomez would be there on the back line, but maybe Konate)... would be interesting to see who played the middle of the back three though, Virgil or Matip? Hendo could play RB as well, he might be a better option than Milner if I'm being honest. But yeah, need TAA back for the City clash. he has his liabilities on defense but what he gives you on the other side of the pitch is hard to replace.

    Totally agree. Great analysis.

3-4-3 sounds like a good possibility given the talent distribution.

solid outing today @ Benfica. It actually looked like the game was getting away from them after Konate's blunder (which totally gave them life and confidence). And then to get a 3rd in all of that is quite the result. You'd think the 2nd leg is all but a foregone conclusion but Benfica won't be pushovers as they showed today. The first half was really entertaining though. When Benfica would open up and push, LFC would push back even harder... that was fun to watch. Keita really saved the day at the end with that 3rd goal and pushing forward on the dribble.

well, all in all, a job well done, didn't get the 3 points, but neither did City. Great game for a neutral, I'm assuming. First half was not well played, probably a bit fortunate to only be down one goal at the break. And we took advantage of that early in the second with the equalizer. And then there were moments where we could have taken the lead. City as well, there at the end, golden opportunity by Mahrez. Coming from behind twice to equalize on the road is the story at the end of the day. Got to win every game. That's it. One game at a time of course. As far as the players, felt Thiago was MOTM first hald, then Sadio MOTM second half. Give it to Sads for the whole game then. Mo, for me, continues to have underwhelming performances. Is the contract thing bothering him... really seems out of form for a player that wants a new contract that pays him 500k a week

Lets replace Mo with Mbappe :couch:

Woo! Great second leg game vs Benfica!

loved seeing Firminho score two! And love that we rested most of our players before Saturday.

Also great to see Tsimikas play so well. He and Thiago have really come on this year to live up to their potential when we signed them.

Mo does not seem to be in great form. Could be the contract as you note, Paul. But could also be a bit of hangover from his games with Egypt. Losing twice to Mane’s team has to hurt. Especially missing two penalties when usually he is gold on those.

Really hope he can get it together Saturday. If he is at the top of his game, he’s as good as any in the world. Certainly better than anyone on Liverpool currently. It’s always a challenge for a forward as he starts to press to score.

Seems like we are on a collision course with Man City - battle for the EPL title (I favor them in part bec of the 1 point lead and in part bec of an easier schedule); facing them once again in the FA Cup! And both of us are in the semis in the UCL.

I believe we can beat them but have to play better. They clearly are the most talented team in the world, imo. Kevin de Bruyne is the best midfielder in the world and may be the best player in the world right now. Wish we had him. We’d be unstoppable.

Great win in the FA Cup!!! On to the Finals. Go Crystal Palace, lol!

Didn’t play amazing and had a scare at the end, but as the great Al Davis said, “Just Win, Baby!”

Really hoping that Salah gets a goal soon and can start playing to his capabilities. He was close on a couple shots today. Would’ve been great. Can’t believe he hasn’t scored during the run of play since mid February!

If Salah can get back on track soon we have a real shot at four cups, or at least three! Especially the way Mane is playing so well.

The good news is we are thru to the FA Cup final and really outplayed City for long spells today. I felt that Pep was trying to keep it close until like the 70th minute so he could bring on KDB but that plan backfired.

Diaz and Jota have been brilliant since joining the team. That spark and fresher legs have really made up for Sadio and Mo's "declining play." And really Sadio has been mostly great but Mo is well below his standards. is it just him being over worked or is he starting to get "old"? I mean if you go back and look at both Mane and Mo, when they first started at LFC, they just had this quickness about them, and they could beat anyone one on one... sometimes anyone one on two  But now, take today's match, you've got Salah unable to beat either Zinchenko or Ake. And those two aren't even regular starters for City. I'm really doubting that we should pay Salah what he wants or even close to it. No one player is bigger than the squad. We must remember that. As great as Mo has been, he's 29. And when you see the likes of Jota and Diaz coming in and making an impact, perhaps that money could be spent better elsewhere. I don't know.

Man City & Liverpool: Where do they stand in quadruple and Double bids?

    https://www.bbc.com/sport/football/61060995

Feels impossible to win the EPL. Man City have a relative breezy schedule. May get tripped up with a draw in one of those games, maybe two (unlikely). They could win all going away.

We play 10 games between now and May 22. That’s an insane schedule. Only one week without a midweek game. And every one of them is vital! Particularly the Villareal games and the FA Cup Final, since we are so close to both and we actually control our destiny.

And while the teams will all be very tough in the CL and FA Cup final, it is only 4 games and technically have to only win 3 (if we get thru on goals vs VR). Any one of the final 3 cups will be amazing feats only because we have such a brutal schedule.

I think Salah is gone unless he miraculously comes alive and gets out of his funk. And scores 10 goals in the next month. Even then he may be because of the money situation in general.

Perhaps it is his age - surely that is a piece - but I think it’s mostly mental/emotional. Reason for that is that he still leads the league in goals by 5 - with 20 - in spite of his struggles. And up to February with the African Cup (ridiculous timing, imo) he was active, energetic, and magical.

And he’s second in assists in the EPL with 11. Any year you are leading the league in goals and possibly assists is pretty special!

Still, he is not at his peak. I suspect he is not getting close to the offer he wants from Liverpool which probably weighs on him and combined with the emotional losses to Senegal he has probably lost an edge. He probably sees the writing in the wall that he will be sold this summer. And I’m sure that weighs mentally. Hate it for him. His goal scoring has been magical the last several seasons.

I also notice that when the crowd sings the Salah song he seems to come alive and get chances within a minute or two (I’ve seen that happen several times this year and in the past). Could be just a coincidence but it tells me that it gives him just a boost emotionally. I honestly think if Egypt had won one of those titles and if it wasn’t a contract issue he’d probably have 25 goals in the EPL by now and would be better. But he seems to have lost the magic and imagination he usually shows. I think that is a mental issue more than physical. Lacks some confidence and that extra internal drive to make the right move at the right time and now it is likely in his head. He actually had Ake and their goalie beat on one play and just chipped wide of the goal on that one play. Two feet left and it’s an amazing goal and he probably back with confidence and joy.

Klopp is in a tough spot. He probably needs to rest Mo just to help him get his mind together, feel fresher, and get some hunger. But he doesn’t want to upset him or take away anything. He did give Salah and Mane rest in the 2nd leg last week which was smart. I’d like to see a rest for Salah in one of the EPL games - maybe next weekend - and then get him fresh. But he also needs playing time to get out of his goal scoring drought in order to regain confidence.

If Salah were hitting on all cylinders right now I actually think we’d have a real shot at the Quad. We are hard to beat when he is on.

The way the rest of the team is playing, especially the improvement in the midfield, and the offensive potential Konate brings, if Salah is feeling it, we are capable of scoring 4-5 goals a game against anyone!

I've been trying to think who Diaz reminds me of... hard to think of a recent LFC player. He's built with those long limbs that make him look taller than he is, but he's only 5-10 apparently. Thomas Muller is only 6-1 and he's built the same way. Similar players maybe?

    What a Glorious match! 4-0!

Just about as good as it gets. Smothering United. Incredible passing and so great to see Mo get two goals and get out of his drought as well as Mane and Diaz. Every goal was great with great set up passes. The front 3/4 played phenomenal (Diaz, Salah, Mane, and Jota).

But what can you say about Thiago? Man of the Match. The guy is becoming even more than what we hoped when we first signed him. Just great on offense and defense. And his passes are phenomenal. Starting to remind me of the great Iniesta (who, for me, is the greatest offensive midfielder of the past 20 years).

Solid match yesterday against a ManU team that were out of their element against us. I don't know how a neutral just doesn't watch our games to oogle over Thiago's passes. He is spectacular. And for me Sadio Mane's new role as the #9 has been potentially the catalyst for our offensive explosion the last several weeks. He was awesome yesterday.

Yes. Totally. And the thing about Mane, which is very underrated, is how hard he plays on defense. Both in pressing defenders & the keeper, and gets back on D all the time and helps out! He’s an animal, just all over.

it's bittersweet because he makes the other midfielders look ordinary (and they aren't). Hendo and Fabinho against ManU. When they touched the ball it was boring

Yes. Fabinho is solid on D. So is Hendo thought he has lost some speed. I think Thiago is a great solution for us and if Elliott can return next year to the form he was showing at the start of this year - the offensive firepower in midfield is scary. What was a weakness is now much stronger. I really don’t see any weaknesses at this point, barring injury, knock on wood. (Even if we sell Salah, whom I love immensely, we still have a killer front line and depth. Would probably need to get another young striker).

I have to say, the scouting department has been as good as any team in all of sport, let alone the Premier League. Salah, Mane, Firminho, Keita, Thiago, Jota, Diaz, Konate … so many somewhat underrated and not Uber expensive players unearthed from other teams, all have great talent. Obviously Van Dijk is great but he was already a stalwart.

I don't understand why we aren't keeping Origi. Of course, if he wants a better opportunity elsewhere I can understand that, he isn't getting quality reps here, but he's a cult hero. And IMO gives us something different. He always has. And when we need a goal late vs Everton (especially ) he gets it done. you change the system with him and Jota up top and all of a sudden you've got a force. Him and Diaz saved the day today. And Robertson of course. Alisson's late jab at Pickford was pure gold.

The KOP going crazy after each goal was so great.

I don't know if City are going to lose, but to me the two likely games for that to occur (or draw) are away vs Leeds this Saturday or away vs West Ham. LFC must win out though. no small feat.

What a time to be a fan of LFC! Thank god he extended for another two years, this is now thru 2026. Four years from now. Certainly the right thing to do with a potential big summer of transfers ahead of us and players needing to know Klopp's future as part of their decision making process. I'm quietly holding out hope that it'll be a straight swap Mbappe for Salah

man, the tale of two halves continues to be a theme for this football club. It's been going on for some time now and really never more evident than today's 2nd leg of the UCL @ Villareal. A first half that was simply devoid of any usual LFC play. Giving in and being outplayed by a spirited Spanish 2nd tier team. And then a second half, under the most intense pressure, to come out and score three goals and completely wipe the floor of their opponent is quite spectacular.

And to think Mo Salah has not been playing up to his usual standards for some time now. And LFC are still where they are without him playing to his ability. I suppose the inevitable question is, do they need him to be the Mo Salah he can be to win all that lies before them? Or can they continue this incredible run without him? Diaz has been some signing. And wait until we see Fabio Carvalho this fall. Jota... Diaz and Carvalho... the future of the attack is right there. And the machine continues to roll on.

Salah hasn’t been his best but he has also been bottled up by being double and triple teamed. However, he has been great of late to set up a ton of goals. Many of them relatively straightforward scoring chances.

Yet he still leads the EPL in goals and also assists! (22/13) Accounting for 35 goals in total. The next highest is Son with 26.

And even with this “out of form” stretch, he is on pace to have more goals in the EPL than any season he’s had other than the 32 goal season. You know you’re great when things aren’t looking great and you’re still scoring at a pace like that, lol!

One of the frustrations I find with world soccer/football, is that so much emphasis is put on the goal scorer, but so little on the assist which is of the the heavy load for the goal; so often goals are a result of someone else making great a great run and then a spectacular pass to a wide open player who just has to tap it in an open net. Then the goal scorer runs around like he just returned a punt for a TD and broke eight tackles! Lol. And sometimes - not always - barely acknowledges the player who made the whole play to set him up. Even an announcer will talk all about the player that scored the goal and sometimes only give lipservice to the great pass. Some great footballers will talk about phenomenal passes. Thierry Henri did that with Salah recently. Talking about his world class pass to Mane.

And statisticians and pundits give less emphasis to assists than, say, hockey does. Which puts an emphasis not only on goals but also total points leaders.

Tough one yesterday. Tottenham / Conte setup was perfect for them, as much as Klopp despises it. However, it's great to see LFC come back and level it. It keeps any sort of PL glory alive IF Man City lose one and we win out. It's then down to goal difference. So the only thing that changed yesterday is that City went from only needing to drop points (draw for ex.) to needing to lose one. It's not impossible. unlikely, but not impossible.

It'll be interesting to see what changes are made to the lineup for Villa on Tuesday, considering the FA Cup final is next weekend. I would honestly give Salah and maybe Mane a break. Have them come off the bench if needed. How much does Stevie G dial it down for his former team?

Fantastic game and great win vs Villa!

Should have scored at least 3 (Keita! ???), probably 4; but then Villa should probably have scored two.

Very fun game. Not sure why, but Villa does very well against us.

I don’t see any way MC lose given their relatively easy schedule. But one never knows as you note.

Still, the biggest games are the ones in which we control our own destiny.

Saturday is HUGE. I dislike Chelsea as much ore more than MC. Hate them. Always have and particularly because so many Americans root for them just because of Pulesic. And I have a neighbor across the street who is a big Chelsea fan so it would be a killer to lose to them. WIN!!!

Salah seems to still be in a funk.

Mane may be our most valuable player this year. Key goals - that header today was awesome - and he is such a pest on defense in the offensive end. Don’t know where he gets the energy!

YES indeed! That was a big struggle though. My goodness me. Can't get one passed Mendy in 120 minutes. Sadio missing in pens had me demolished! Somehow we still pulled it off. Oh man, Alisson with an immense save. He was praying prior to making it, no doubt invoking his dad. Man what a moment that was. Tsimikas as cool as you like. That's two.... 2 more to go. Can the Hammers help us out tomorrow???

Hope against hope for the EPL!

Woo! So elated. Even a shot at 3 is huge.

At least we have control of the UCL.
