Tua does have zip on his balls though?

Be the guy who says he wants to start Thompson over Tua! Come on do it!

Tua isn't great. I'm probably never going to be on board with him as our long term solution. But he has a good enough NFL arm. Not above average, and nowhere near elite, but enough to be somewhere in the 20-25th best QB range when he's right, and when he's healthy.

From what I've seen from Thompson so far, his is well below that. Its not about distance, and he does throw a nice spiral, but his arm action is slow and there just isn't much zip to it. I would say of the 90-100 QBs in NFL camps right now, he's probably in the bottom ten in arm talent.

I like what I've seen so far for him being a late round rookie. However to sit here and say we should keep him over Bridgewater as backup QB, or to say he's looking better than Tua is just... pure insanity. We've got to find a way to keep him around though, there could be something there. He's looked OK thus far, but he's got alot of growing to do.

If we only go with two quarterbacks, I would take Thompson over Bridgewater. The rookie does have a lot of growing to do, no doubt, but I feel like he already brings more upside than Bridgewater. Nothing against Teddy, but he's finished developing and he's never going to be the type of QB that leads his team to a win in the fourth quarter.

You're wrong here. You can't honestly say you would want Thompson over a proven veteran to be your quarterback in the 4th quarter on a contending team.

I've watched all the Dolphin interview videos posted on the NFL app the only person interviewed i was not impressed with was the DC. so yeah, I'm kinda worried about the defense too.

I'm really torn on this, guys. I'm a Big 12 guy (Oklahoma State), and I've watched this dude play average to below-average QB for the past five years. In fact, when we drafted him, my old college roommate shot me an LOL text, and a "good luck with that guy". Even in the game he QB'd and K State beat us I think he was something like 11-30 for 111 yards or something. I dont remember all the stats, but I do remember never really fearing this guy - especially in a conference where QBs throw it all over the field.

Now that said, I completely understand that college stats/results dont really matter when you get to the next level and different guys mature and develop at different speeds - but given the history I have watching this guy, I still cannot really get excited about it.

That said, I'm also not excited about Bridgewater. Especially after that preseason game.

Personally, I'd take Thompson...even if it is the wrong move for today. That's the thing though, we need to be developing quarterbacks and not just taking the safe route.

Today, Bridgewater is better than Thompson on paper. I completely understand that. But we've also seen Thompson lead 5 or 6 scoring drives this preseason while we've seen Teddy lead zero. My point here is that Thompson is getting better weekly and he has that "it factor", that competitive drive that you just don't see in typical rookies. We know what Bridgewater will be in as year from now, but we have no idea about Thompson's ceiling. That's exciting to me.

In a recent interview, McDaniel said that his job is to keep the top 53 players and he thinks Thompson is one of them. He also said he's not opposed to being three deep at QB, so hopefully this is a non-issue for this season.

I like Thompson a lot. With that being said, I'll pump the brakes on keeping him on the active roster if it means we'll lose a contributing player. If Tua and Bridgewater are healthy, there's a near-zero chance Thompson will ever sniff the 48. Just as I asked if Bowden's versatility as a slash might create room on the roster since he can play several positions, Thompson's retention would/will result in a potential cut and create a depth problem. At this point, I'd suggest that Thompson's ascension will make it more likely we keep Bowden over a full-time WR or RB since he can be an effective RB4 and WR5.

To me, especially given the teams' history, it would be crazy if he didn't make the roster. He's been by far the best QB this preseason. I know it is just preseason, but still, he's been good. Have to keep him.

How is Bridgewater a “proven veteran?” The only thing Bridgewater has proven to me is his inability to keep the starting jobs he’s had. He’s proven his ability to get benched.

Thus far, from what I’ve seen during the preseason, Thompson is a better quarterback than Bridgewater and it would be SMART to trade him to get something for him rather than merely cutting him.

He's one of the best backups in the league. He has nearly no upside as a starter, but that's not what his role is. He isn't the QB of the future in waiting. Just last season, he started 14 games, threw for over 3000 yards, 67% and an 18/7 TD ratio. If Tua gets hurt for several games, he can drive the bus and not wreck it. That's what I want in a backup.

I’m not an idiot. The best you could hope for Bridgewater would be a 4th or 5th round pick…if that but something would be better than nothing.

I get what you’re saying but as I’ve said, Thompson has been better than Bridgewater this preseason. Bridgewater could actually lose the QB2 position to Thompson and if that’s the case, we’ll get nothing for him.

    I say roll the dice.

Normally I would agree with you but consider…

Thompson played the entire game against the Buccaneers…

Bridgewater played with the same players during his preseason debut last week…and Thompson played the last series…

One performed and had command of the offense and the other struggled.

If Bridgewater, who is allegedly a proven veteran can be outplayed by a rookie under the same conditions, then his clout gets seriously called into question

Bridgewater has nothing to worry about. He's not out there proving he belongs in this league. He has proven that, maybe not as a starter anymore, but at most an elite backup.

He has that position locked up. Zero question about it. The only question is whether McDaniel keeps three quarterbacks. I highly doubt it.

Thompson is a cute story. A very poor man's Matt Moore. Maybe one day he can catch on as a quarterback in the league. But, I give him a 1% chance he ever throws a pass in this league.

LMAO, you probably know that I was/am a huge Matt Moore fan...and it has also occurred to me that Thompson looks like a 25 year old Matt Moore. I'll admit that gets me excited, especially since this kid is a rookie and playing with this level of poise and confidence.

I wouldn't call him a "poor man's" Moore, however, because he's about as raw as they come. That's the exciting part though, that he could be shaped into something special. I have no idea how teachable the kid is, but if this is his baseline then I'm very intrigued about his future

To be fair, I also see some Herbert comparisons as well, which is probably why a lot here like him (whether they've realized it yet or not).

Well, I agree that if Thompson is able to stick around, getting somewhere around Moore's level of success would have to be considered a huge win for him. I also don't think that he has it in him, but you never know.

But he and Moore look to be very different players on the field. Moore is a lot like Fitzpatrick. Adequate size and arm, but reckless and willing to just go out onto the field and not give a **** and throw the ball in the general direction of their receivers hoping that they'll make the play. Sometimes it worked, sometimes it blew up in his face. I'm not personally a fan of that style of quarterback at all, and wanted him replaced during the entire RT17 era, but at least he barely saw the field from 2012-2015.

Thompson, were he to ever make it, would probably be more like Damon Huard. Or perhaps the late career Bernie Kosar that we had in the mid 90s (not his younger self with the Browns).

If you really look at the tape, they are pretty ugly balls he is throwing. No tight spirals, no zip, the ball seems to be floating to the target. His receivers have been making good plays snagging the ball out of the air.

I just don't see it. But, I understand everyone likes the underdog backup quarterback thinking they are going to get the next Tom Brady. Sorry to burst some of your bubbles. I can't believe how offended people get over him.

Bah, it's not people getting offended- it's excitement for something to actually look forward to. The team is coming together. We have a rookie QB that can put some drives together. It's positive stuff coming off a few positive seasons...and it's okay for some of us to have a little hope that things might finally work out for the team.

Looking back at the last three years, we were the laughingstock of the league. It was painful to watch until some of the rookies really stepped up and changed our minds. Then we have all the Ross stuff to squash any hope, but the team is still coming together somehow.

LOL, give us our five minutes of excitement because we're certainly not used to having it.

That probably is part of it. I'm not nearly as high on this year's team as many here are. I don't like the direction on either side of the ball, and I think that 8 or 9 wins is probably the ceiling. My hopes are more long term.

I'm worried about the defense but at the same time, I also know that a 1-yard slant to Waddle or Hill could easily be a 99 yard TD pass. We see Tua throwing with more velocity, we see the rookie receiver Easy-E balling out. We see young defenders really stepping up and getting fans excited. There's just so many positives that we aren't used to in typical seasons.

I think if the line is marginally better and the defense is just pretty good, we may have a 12 or 13 win team. We went from having a horrible WR and RB room to one of the best in the league in one year...that alone is reason for optimism. But I really think Tua's continued growth is the catalyst for Marino-like showdowns...we won't have to win games 20-16 anymore and we might actually see some of those 45-42 shootouts. That's all any fan could ever hope for, the ability to come back and hang with anyone due to the talent on the offense.

Skylar Thompson- that's just the extra cherry on top for fans. I mean, he's a 7th round rookie leading comeback TD drives...how could anyone be upset over that? The kid has already exceeded his draft stock, in my opinion, because stuff like that just doesn't happen.

I just can't get excited about either an offense OR a defense that's reliant on big plays to succeed. I wasn't under Gase, not under Flores and not under McDaniel either. Big plays are exciting when they're rare and, to use your phrase, the cherry on top when you have an otherwise successful scheme that can run regular, repeatable more conservative plays with success all game long. But if the big ones are all that you have and you can't score, or stop the other team without them, then its just hollow to me.

So for me, I'm hoping that 2022 and 2023 are a time where McDaniel gets his feet wet, works out the kinks and becomes a really good HC as he learns his lessons, that we later draft a QB that I like a lot more than who we have now, that we move on from Hill as soon as its financially possible, that Waddle develops into a great all around WR who can do more than YAC, that the OL actually develops a few long term solutions from the young group that we have, that we draft a workhorse RB that we can rely on all game long, and that we find a DC who can run a scheme that stops the other team without the extreme high risk lunacy that we've run the last few years.

My eyes are on the horizon and 2024 and beyond.

I don't see it as a high quality problem when your third stringer looks more impressive than your first and second stringers. Either way, I am not happy with our QB situation. None of these guys are giving me confidence going into the season.

With one preseason game to go, I'd die laughing if Thompson ends up leading all rookie QBs. That's .9 doesn't feel like too much to make up in a half (guessing Tua will play the 1st half).

With Tua's good practice, along with Bridgewater's struggles, I'd be shocked if McD plays Tua more than the first quarter. I'd think we'll see Bridgewater in quarters 2 and 3.

Coaches are treating exhibition games differently now that there are only three. The dress rehearsal is probably a thing of the past for the majority of coaches. I could see the Niners doing it with Lance. Maybe even New England, with its unsettled OC situation.
