I think it ran out in that Braves game. How in the hell does a team come back from a 10-3 deficit and still lose?
I'm not sold yet. They don't seem to have the same amount of power, yet are just as bad defensively. How can that possibly make them better ? Isn't Coughlan like an "error machine" ? What I thought I had read was he makes Uggla look like a great infielder.
Coughlan is about the same defensively as Uggla, and what he loses in power he greatly exceeds Uggla in contact skills, on base skills, base running stealing. The rest of the guys are atleast above average to gold glove caliber. And the power isn't that far off. But the on-base skills are greatly superior to our Marlins now.
I like the sound of that. I swear, Hanley is the only guy who gets on base a decent amount of times, and that's WITH his super-speed.
Then pray-tell why didn't they go with these guys this year ? See that is why I don't always believe what I see in minor league stats. The major league game is an altogether different level.
How do we know they will be ready next year ? I know you need "seasoning" but sometimes you just have to go with your gut feeling, and if these guys have the talent, they should have been given a chance to play and help a team to the playoffs this year.
I would love to be the team that ruins the Mets playoff chances again this year. And............. I still am on the quest to finish ahead of the Braves.....we never have and I can just taste it, but man I want it badly.
Besides the young starting pitching, here's another reason the Marlins should be encouraged, even with changes looming. Jim Fleming, Florida's vice president/scouting, said last week the Marlins have the highest number of promising position player prospects ``in the seven years I've been here. Our system is as full as I can remember.'' Fleming said the Marlins project three Double A Carolina prospects to be big-league starters -- center fielder Cameron Maybin, second baseman Chris Coghlan and first baseman/ex-UM star Gaby Sanchez -- and believe all are ready to compete for jobs next spring. He said two other Double A position players might, too: outfielders John Raynor and Scott Cousins. Maybin hit .277 with 13 homers and 49 RBI in 108 games but led the Southern League with 124 strikeouts. ''He hit .300 the last month and progressed in all phases. We're very pleased,'' Fleming said. Right-handed hitting Sanchez (.314, 17, 92) and lefty-hitting Coghlan (.297, 7, 74, 34 steals) could compete for starting jobs if veterans are traded. ''They've hit everywhere they've been, and the track record is guys that do'' also hit well in the big leagues, Fleming said. Sanchez can play third base, but the Marlins see him as a first baseman. On Raynor (.312, 48 steals), Fleming said, ``Some would say maybe not enough power to be a corner outfielder, but our big-league club could use some speed, and he's the best base-stealer we've had for three years. You have to consider him as an everyday player. And Cousins is a five-tool player.'' The Marlins have two first basemen who were MVP of their leagues -- Sanchez and Class A Jupiter's Logan Morrison (.332, 13 HR, 74 RBI). ''Really, really good talent who can also play left field,'' Fleming said of the lefty-hitting Morrison. ``He could reach the major leagues sometime next year.'' And 2007 first-round pick/third baseman Matt Dominguez (.296, 18, 70) ''had a great year despite missing six weeks with mononucleosis.'' There's also 2007 fourth-rounder Bryan Petersen, ``an exceptional outfielder with 23 homers at three levels.'' But the most intriguing might be right fielder Michael Stanton, a 2007 second-rounder who led his Class A Greensboro league with 39 homers (.293, 97 RBI). ''There's no timetable at that age [18], but he's a fabulous talent and has the most power in the system'' after Dallas McPherson (42 homers in Triple A). We heard the same self-serving crappola about Jeremy Hermida a few years ago. It would be more convincing if it didn't come from a Florida Marlins employee. Don't you see what this is all about ? Its just to try and soothe you when they get rid of Uggla and the others, and don't pay their arbitration salaries. Mainge c'mon, don't you see through this thinly veiled and planted article ?
It will be tough to get to 6, Oswalt has been tough on the Marlins, but I do think we beat him in Houston earlier this year......that was the one that Cantu went yard and over the train tracks right ?
they may turn out to be Hermida, or they could all become Cabrera, we won't know until we find out. Anyone who knows how the marlins do business doesn't expect many of these guys to be coming back.
Its scary, and it never helps to develop fan loyalty. The cycle needs to end sometime, and it has to start with the team. I afraid though as long as this ownership is in charge, things will never change. Even with the new stadium, they will come up with some excuse to never have strong payroll. It will always be the exuse they are paying off the stadium debt....just wait and see them use that as an excuse.
wow its been so fun watching these guys this season.....maybin got his first hit as a marlin and jorge cantu is a'blaze......imo hes comeback player of the year!!!!
Way to go guys ! This is the way to end the season if you aren't going to make the playoffs. Thank goodness we are definatly going to finish above the Braves.....FINALLY after 16 seasons !
hey we aint outve it.....we play the philthies 3 times this weekend.....we sweep that, and we are in the thick of it, with a series still to go against the muts!
It would be amazing, but as good as last nite was for the Marlins, we got zero help from the rest of the league. But I like the fight these guys are showing. Enjoy these last at bats for Uggla, Willingham and a couple of others, as they will be the last you see of them in a Marlins uni.
Many thought that they would never get rid of both Willis and Cabrera. And this ownership got rid of them in the same trade. With these cheapskates they don't give a damn, as long as it saves them some money.
Dunno what you think of that trade, but i would say we seem to have gotten the better end of it. D-Train seems done and we haven't missed Cabrera's bat with Cantu in the line-up. And both Andrew Miller and Maybin seem like they will end up becoming good players.
You think it won't happen ? You really believe these cheapos will sign all of them for $ 3 to 4 million dollars a year ? You think they will raise the payroll to $ 30 million to do it ? You are outta your mind......
I am not questioning what we got back, I am talking about the payroll dump that trade was all about. It was done primarily because they didn't want to sign Cabrera to a big money deal. This ownership is about nothing but the bottom line. Its not about putting out the best product, its about putting out the cheapest product.
How can anyone expect ownership to spend money when they can't get fans to the ballpark. Hopefully it changes when they get a roof
fans don't go because there is a new lineup every season.....there is ZERO continuity.....everytime a fan gets close to a player....buys their jerrsey...roots them on.....they get traded for some 18 yr olds with "potential"......its bs.....they will never keep a fan base with those shennanigans going on every year or so.....new ballpark or not, imo
Seems to me that the FO knew exactly what they were doing. Traded two players who's percieved value is much higher than it really. If we had most of our fans' way, we'd have $250 million+ tied into these two guys right now. The ownership thing is getting really old.
Tell me, if the plan was to ship Hanley off, why would they give him a $70 million contract beforehand? To save some other team's front office the trouble of negotiations?
