Because the decision was made to go younger, and Delgado is old. It's really that simple.

I don't think that's true. With a new ballpark with a roof to get out of the sun would help. Win and ppl will come. Ppl will learn new names. Besides baseball jerseys are too expensive

They have done everything they can to run off as many fans as they could. They have no one to blame but themselves. Fans can only take so much crap, before they say this isn't worth it. Its even starting to happen to our beloved Dolphins.

DING DING DING DING ! We have a winner !

Its the biggest problem this franchise has. They want fans to be loyal, but they haven't been loyal to the fans.

Fans are customers, and they are always right, however this front office shows them zero regard and treats them as though they don't matter. Well the fans are showing the ownership by staying away that there is something wrong. When the fan base is this turned off, and refuses to go to the games, then there is something fundamentally wrong with they way you are running the franchise. However this front office thinks the only thing wrong is a new stadium. I have news for them if they don't sit down and realize they are not building fan loyalty, a new stadium isn't gonna do squat.

I don't see how you arrive at that conclusion. The Marlins put a young product out there, they started winning games, and they didn't raise ticket prices; you can get into a Marlins game for five freaking dollars. The Dolphins are something like 7-25 over the last two seasons, a combined 1-18 from the start of last season to now, and Huizenga raised ticket prices even higher despite that.

Mainge, you and I know it was probably for the best, but the general public will not see it that way. Sometimes you have to spend some money, to make some money. By signing those two, while maybe not the most prudent thing financially, it would have built fan loyalty.....its kind of a choice between two evils.

You are never going to build a fanbase like the Red Sox, Yankees or Braves have without showing some passion & respect for the local fanbase. I ask you, when was the last time the Marlins did something in Miami-Dade County for the community ? Are they going to start doing these things only now that the new stadium is gonna be built here ? Its that complete ignorance of the community by the carpetbagger owner Loria & obnoxious step-son Samson that really galls not only me, but many others. They are not liked, are looked upon as arrogant NYers who could care less about South Fla. They already tried to move the team once, and maybe more times than what we know of.

They have the least financial resources in baseball, but still are given more than $ 70 million a year in revenue before selling a ticket, yet complain when other teams do spend some money (ala the Ichiro debacle two years ago when Samson opened his big mouth - Mariner brass defends Ichiro deal). People here are embarassed by the ownership here because it doesn't matter how many tickets they sold, they would still try to run the franchise on the cheap.

It makes him a much more attractive player because they know all you have to do is trade for him, the contract has been worked out for 7 years. I still believe he will be gone before the season starts next year. They are not going to pay one player nearly 1/3 of the payroll.

Some of you will be surprised when it happens, but you heard it here 1st.

They put a FACELESS product out there. No one knows them, could care less about them. People loved Lowell, people knew who Delgado was.

And I am not saying it wasn't smart to get rid of those two, but what is the expediently smart thing to do, is not always the smartest thing to do for the long run. Sometimes you have to just bite the bullett, so you'll be better off later.

Then don't kvetch and moan when the fans turn you off, because you don't have anyone they want to see on the team. Samson has repeatedly bemoaned the local fanbase, chided them even. That is not good business, and it shows when you look at their fanbase.

So we now have to field a team of big names to get people to care? If that's the case, the namewhores can stay home. Besides, they watch on TV anyway.

In a sense, Samson is right. The team spent money in 04 and 05 and no one showed up.

By the way, Huizenga is not a shining example of NFL ownership, so I would beg to differ using him as an exanple.

They averaged 22,500 which is just about league average. They didn't make the playoffs either year.

And this is true......Marlins TV ratings are almost in the Top 10 of teams around the league. Better ratings than Atlanta or surprisingly the Phillies.

Dude, you're the one who referenced the Dolphins.

And then people deserted the product, which led to the Great Culling.

Indeed. The problem isn't fanbase, it's turnout. People put up with the open top at Dolphin Stadium because the Dolphins are king. The Marlins, not so much. Get a place with a roof and air conditioning and people will show. It's too bad they couldn't get the stadium in downtown Miami just like the AAA, though. It's an easier drive for all involved if you can just take 95 or 75 straight over.

please, this organization is NOT that cheap. They have proved they will pay money to certain players and spend money when they feel like they can make a push. Hanley if he continues developing is going to end up being one of the greatest shortstops ever.

Before you mention Miggy, its a different circumstance as we had no idea we were going to be anything close to competitive in the near future at that point and it allowed us to also unload D-Train who has fallen off the face of the earth.

When you almost make the playoffs while being dead last in payroll, the correct term is "bang for your buck."

No, they traded away Lowell, Delgado and Pierre, and named a faceless team except for Willis and Cabrera. That is when the fanbase stopped going to games.

I can recite a friend of mine who took his wife and 2 small daughters to a game in 2005. The rains started in the 2nd inning and the wife turned to him and said, "This is the last Marlins game you will ever talk me into going to".

My argument is not that the team will draw better when they get a domed stadium, they will, its the fact this ownership will have a crapload more money when they do move in there. I am afraid they will use the fact they are paying for part of the stadium to refuse to add payroll once its built. There is so far no provision with the city or county to demand they spend "X" amount. As aholey as this ownership is, I can see them pulling this off, and perpetually keeping the Marlins as a budget conscious team, maybe reluctant to go out and get help (like this year) when they need to spend some money to get them to the end.

Are you kidding me ??? Not that cheap ? Dude, they have a $ 20 million payroll, and the next highest is Tampa Bay at $ 42 million !!!!!! :sidelol: :sidelol: :sidelol: :sidelol:

That my friend, is beyond cheap.

Show me when they have paid money in the last 3 years, when or even in 2006 or 2008 when they could have made the playoffs ? Arthur Rhodes is the lone aquisition in those 2 seasons.

That and a $ 1.50 will buy you a cup of coffee. Dude, if you miss the playoffs, YOU MISS THE PLAYOFFS.....in the words of Herm Edwards......

And not making the playoffs but getting the best bang for your buck earns you a big fat Gold Star aye ? :sidelol:

Compare what we did last year to what we did this year. We were so pessimistic at the beginning of the season I couldn't even bear to use the current name of the team when starting the thread! Come on, don't deny that this team took massive leaps forward. Fine, the Rays did better than us, but this has been a much better season than anyone expected.

I'm with you on worrying that they key contributors will get shown the door and we'll get sent straight back to the hell of 06, but let's wait for that to actually happen first.

I agree to an extent, but I don't want to be like the Yankees, who spend money just for the sake of spending money. It's counterproductive. What did the Yankees do this year? Heck, what have they done this decade?

I'm a big fan of building teams the right way--that is, with youth and select free agents. I think it's starting to pay off for us. (And I hope the Dolphins stick to that plan too!)

20 mil in a year where we were supposed to fight out with the nationals for worse team in the division, it was supposed to be a rebuilding year, you don't rebuild by paying 80 million dollars.

Half their team is out for the year. They will be formidable next year.

So, how 'bout Maybin? Not bad so far.

Not bad at all. I was at the game last night and it was great seeing the kid hit and steal bases.

I hope he is the answer to the 5 tool problem in the outfield.

He definitely improves our base running. He hits the ball well, too. He looks like the kind of player we need; someone who plays smart offense, rather than just swinging for the fences every time.

If he starts 2009 opening day at center field, I think we've found our guy. Finally. How long have we looked for a good CF? It seems like decades. If we can trade or sign from free agency a good catcher, our defense will improve leaps and bounds.

And while I'm being wildly optimistic, Fredi Gonzalez for NL Manager of the Year, anyone? Even though we likely won't make the playoffs, he's done a better job this year than Joe Girardi did in 2006.

Maybe but not by much. Neither is a great manager in my opinion.

Either way in baseball the manager is generally an overrated factor, but what a great one can do is get guys to play well on a consistant basis or rather eliminate long slumps. This team was really streaky all year, and keeping Gregg at closer was a very bad move.

He's been about a C+ in my book maybe a B- through certain stretches.

I agree with all of this, but nonetheless the award exists, and I can't think of someone else more deserving presuming we keep up the winning.

My biggest complaint about Fredi is that he hasn't improved the defense. There's no excuse for some of the defensive play we've seen this year, and that falls on the coaches.

I agree that there might not be anyone more deserving. Also we have to remember he's been a coach a while, but is relatively new as a manager. He will learn when to make changes and when not to as he gains more experience.
