Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa said early this offseason that he was planning to work with some jiu-jitsu instructors to get a better handle on how to fall safely, to avoid his head hitting the ground and causing concussions. Dolphins coach Mike McDaniel loves that.

McDaniel said today that Tagovailoa has taken his training very seriously, and that the type of work Tagovailoa is doing is valuable for all of the quarterbacks, who rarely get hit until the season starts and could use some practice on breaking their falls properly to protect themselves.

“I’ve seen a guy that has followed through on his words as much as any young man I’ve come across in my career. You talk about going above and beyond [with] training and martial arts. We’ve incorporated it into some of the drill work we do with the quarterbacks,” McDaniel said, via Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald.

After last season’s scary concussions, Tagovailoa’s health is the No. 1 topic of conversation in Miami this offseason, and McDaniel believes that Tagovailoa has taken productive steps in learning how to protect his head when he hits the ground.

As an added bonus, he’ll be able to kick the crap out of anyone who gives him a cheap shot.

Not in Jiu Jitsu. It's more like he'll throw an arm bar on someone or choke them out. Either way....all good.

I’m fine with the martial arts training..

However when falling in martial arts both your hands are free

In football your holding a ball with one sometimes two hands to protect from fumbling

So hopefully they are practicing with a ball

As a jiu jitsu practitioner, I'm trying hard not to be triggered by all the comparisons and conflations to karate... :chuckle::chuckle:

Not always DJ. A lot of takedowns, one of your arms is being controlled. In those situations, you use one arm to break fall as bast you can.

The important thing is, in practicing takedowns and the proper way to fall, it helps you become better at falling in general as weird as that sounds, whether 1 or both of your arms are free.

I remember joking around both here and while watching games that Tua should take up jiu jitsu in the off season and practice break falling. I was shocked when it actually happened, but if you think about it, it makes sense! We spend our whole lives learning how to walk and not fall down - so we never really practice the "art" of falling. I help out with the kids classes and how to fall properly is one of the first things we teach them. It keeps them safer while practicing and competing, and it's the same for adults.

There's no guarantee jiu jitsu will keep Tua concussion free this season, but I promise you all - it can't hurt! And before someone goes after me again - I know someone in a certain unnamed thread that got shut down got all up and arms because they thought I was presenting myself as some kind of jiu jitsu expert. I'm not, just a blue belt hobbyist that enjoys it immensely!
