Well, it comes down to three games.

I'm not liking our chances. Why?

    1. The Weather, heavy rain today and rain through the weekend. Doubleheaders are not kind to us with our bullpen

    2. The Marlins are much tougher than the Nats, and I'm sure they would love to knock us out again while the Nats are thinking about beach time.

    3. The Cubs will be putting lineups up like last night at least twice against the Brewers who have gotten hot at the right time.

If we had driven in one of the 10,000 runners at third base on wed night and won, I would have said we get in, now, I'm not so sure.

Three games left for three teams....two get to go to the dance, while one gets a long vacation. It's like musical chairs...someone is going to be left without a seat. :shifty:
The Phillies are doing everything they can to give the Mets and Brewers 2nd, 3rd and 4th chances. I don't think Hamels and Myers are ready to put on their big boy pants just yet, and we have Blanton going tonight. He can look really good but he can also look like crap. I would much rather be facing the Nationals for three games at CBP then having to face the Marlins for three, but sometimes you play down to your level of competition, and the team with nothing to lose plays looser and kicks your tail. It's been a great season, and I have a lot more respect for the Mets especially with the way they played after Willy was let go.
Hopefully the weather won't affect the Phil's games or the Mets/Marlins games as being asked to play doubleheaders with the playoffs on the line isn't fair to any team. But there could be a two way or three way tie after 162 games, and so I am sure they will do everything to get these last three games in so Monday doesn't become a mess. Hopefully Lou Pinella will not sit down his regulars so that the Brewers can sneak in.

Good luck Greg, Boik, Met's fans....my nerves are shot.

Thanks Roman. Your boys have won tonight. Mets are down 6-1 bottom 8th and look like crap.

By the way, if you wanna chuckle, I have devised a couple of ways to pick out the Met fans when youre just walking down the street with nothing better to do. We're the ones carrying bottles of Tums/Rolaids, whose eyes look shot from both watching then crying, and who look like we just aged 20 years during a game.

Santana really pitched with some stones today. I'm kind of hoping for a 1 game playoff on Monday between the Mets and Brewers right now.

Good luck Sunday against the Brewers. Johan really came up large for you guys, and it looks like the Cubbies are trying to ruin it for the Brewers. This is why baseball is so great....you play 162 games and sometimes even that doesn't decide it.

Santana is the man. 9-0 over his last 17 starts, still the era leader and hes had 10 leads blown for him by the bullpen of stooges. The good news is IF we get in hes still set to go for game 1 on tues or weds...whenever it is.

Hopefully Ollie is inspired by the game Santana pitched and finds a way to top it :)

Brew crew lost, back tied for the WC. If its still tied after tomorrow the playoff game is monday night at shea on TBS. Hopefully thats a dead issue with a Mets win tomorrow and a Milwakee loss... :ffic:

Dear Luis Castillo and Aaron Heilman,

Please stay away from Shea Stadium tomorrow. The team will be better off without you.

Tarp coming off the field now.

Post game celebration for the closing of shea is going to be empty if the mets lose lol. Willie Mays, Seaver, Daryl, Piazza, obviously Hernandez and Darling (since they do play by play), and a ton of others are present.

Hopefully, we get good Ollie today.

Definitely agree with that first point. Theres no pulling punches there.

Id clean out the entire bullpen. Sanchez, Heilman, Feliciano, Blowenweis, Ayala can all go away. If I have to keep one as a situational LHP it would be Feliciano. Smith, Parnell, Kunz Stokes can stay. Truthfully, id send all 5 of those guys somewhere for broken bat and

To replace them Id sign Smoltz to close. Yeah, thats right. I said I would take a brave, at least hes not a wuss. Why he might do sign: The braves are not good for the foreseeable future. 1/7m with an option for the 2nd year at 7m.

Sign Dan Wheeler. Hes had a good year in TB. 3/10m

Goodbye Ollie, Hello AJ Burnett. Ollie pitched well today but hes too inconsistent to ever be relied upon in my opinion. Today was a prime example. he cruised through 5 with a great pitch count and then self destructs in the 6th. Burnett is a big game pitcher who k's a ton. 5/65m

Sign Derek Lowe. Rubber armed 35 year old sinker baller looked good this year. Plus hes a gamer with big game experience. This team needs all the character guys it can get. 3/30 mil

Sign someone to compete with Niese for the 5th spot. Loser possibly goes to the pen.

For LF a guy like Raul Ibanez might be appropriate. the mets have the worst LF production in baseball with 10 home runs and 40+ rbi. Thats awful. Ibanez gives you a great deal of line up depth and is a consummate hitter with risp where we have sucked. 2 years/11 mil.

Castillo goes, murphy takes over 2b.

Sign a 5th OF. Mark Kotsay comes to mind.

    2009 lineup:
    Reyes
    Beltran
    Murphy
    Delgado
    Wright
    Church
    Ibanez
    Schneider/Castro

Bench: Nick Evans, Castro, Easley, Endy Chavez, Mark Kotsay

    Starting staff:
    Johan
    Burnett
    Pelfrey
    Lowe
    Niese/whoever

    Bullpen:
    Mid relief: Stokes, Parnell, Smith
    Situational Lefties: Feliciano and Rincon
    8th inning: Wheeler/Kunz
    Closer: Smoltz

Bottom line dont blow 30 saves next year. Thats just games you lead in the 7th inning or later not games that were tied and lost or games that you took a lead later then the 7th and lost.

Tough loss today, I think it was dumb to celebrate Shea after the game. I'm not sure how many people stayed in the stadium to watch it (I turned the game off once Church ended it) but I just think it was a bad idea.

Anyway on to Boik's post, here are my thoughts for the team next year as an obvious outsider:

For the pen: Wheeler signed a long term deal with the Rays either last year or earlier this year, however the Mets should look at the waiver wire and try to find some good cheap arms like a Grant Balfour and take a chance. I still think they should consider signing K-Rod, even if you have to pay him $15 mill a year it still wouldn't stop the Mets from spending money on other areas especially with a new ball park.

On the rotation: I wouldn't touch Burnett if I were the Mets, he's an injury risk and according to scouts doesn't have the heart to pitch in big spots especially in NY. I'd definitely try and sign Derek Lowe, he's a work horse, throws a ton of innings and is a winner. I'd let Pedro walk, I don't think he has it anymore. I'd also consider signing Paul Byrd. He's not a sexy name but he'd cost under 10 million a year, give you innings and throw strikes. He's also a gamer and would be a very good 5th starter.

On the line up of bench: Ibanez is a good player but he's going to be what 34 or 25 next year? Maybe I'd pass if he wouldn't sign a 2 year deal. Maybe make a run at Adam Dunn. I agree Kotsay would be a nice 4th OFer but at this point in his career I think he'll me looking to be a starter somewhere.

I think the Mets need a new manager too. I thought Manuel did a nice job and I don't blame him for the Mets failing this season but I think they need some new blood at the top (also one of the reasons why I thought it was dumb of the F.O. to extend Omar).

I turned it off after the last out as well. Couldnt have gave 2 poops about shea even though I liked going there and have many great memories there.

You dont commit 15 mil to a closer who's MPH is dropping like dead weight from 97 to the 91-92 range. Wheeler hasnt signed anything, certainly not last year anyway, and as far as I know not this year bro. He's had experience here and did pretty well.

Burnetts already done fine in big spots. And he flat out dominates the yankees anywhere and hes done reasonably well in shea. He came through the mets system a long time ago..his roots are here. The last 3 years hes been good for over 30 starts so the injury label isnt really relevant in recent years. Id rather commit the money to him then Ollie.

Byrd is someone I had in mind to compete with Niese for the 5th slot. I agree id let Pedro walk but I think hes walking himself in to retirement.

Ibanez is 36 or 37, but hes still productive. They dont need a high k guy like Dunn and Id puke if they got him. Dunn is the antithesis of what this team needs. They have Adam Dunn already, his name is Carlos Delgado. they need situational hitters. Ibanez is one of the best available. Kotsay is also 37. Cant imagine anyone looking to give him a starting job when he cant stay healthy.

As far as Omar, I think his body of work is fine. He cant pick bullpen arms but hes a very good GM and very good at acquiring talent. Hes retooled a farm system that had been horrid for much of two decades.

As far as Jerry, I like him and I think given the tools he could be ok. However, he is not an x's and o's manager and that is something I always crave. Bobby V is always my first choice there. He may be available for a reunion from what Im reading today in Newsday and the Daily News. Otherwise who else is out there? From what I see not much. :wink2:

I would rather keep Manuel who bled some wins out of that horrible bullpen. I would like to see Omar gone for putting that mess of a bullpen together.

David Wright was horrible this year despite his numbers, he failed in the clutch more than I can count.

Beltran, Church and when Endy is in, cover 90 % of the OF as all three are natural CF's. All Ibanez needs to do is stand there and hit.

when has burnett came up during "big spots" ???

as a marlin fan he choked big time when we needed him.......i think it was 2005......playing in houston fighting them late for the wildcard spot......he gives up hits to load the bases.....and then.....with needing every "w" he gives up a ton of runs and to top it off walks ROGER CLEMENS to score another run......

god I hate him for that......and he was irrelevant during the 2003 world series season healing from tommy john.......alot of years I haven't seen him come thru in big spots.....so I would watch what you wish for.....alot of money.....with no guarentee of performance

I agree to a point. His velocity is down, his K's and accuracy arent where they were either. It's a good thing he's developed a nasty change up because his fast ball just hasnt been what it once was this year. But, you guys are in the playoffs if you had Frankie on your team. I wouldn't want to give him the years he's looking for, but I'd give him the money.

Also not sure I'd want to rely on a John Smoltz to secure my bullpen. He's an injury waiting to happen, even if he isnt pitching as much out of the bp. Closer goes down and you're asking for a repeat of this year. Id someone a little more reliable.

Sorry how things ended for you guys though. I'm sure you guys will fix the pen one way or the other.

Oh, and think you guys will have any interest in Juan Rivera to fill your hole in LF'd?

Its possible we have interest in Rivera but Im not sure hes what this clubhouse needs.

As far as K rod, you dont need to spend 15 mil on a closer to not blow 30 saves. If the pen was semi competent and blew say 18 saves, 40% less, we win the division, the NL, and home field throughout the playoffs without much trouble. I mean our pen this year was extraordinarily bad. :wink2:

Smoltz is a risk but Id rather take a 1 year gamble on a proven gamer then a 4-6 year gamble on a 27 year old already pitching like he 37.

I agree you don't committ 15 mill to a closer but with the way the Mets bullpen pitched the last 2 months the Mets might as well go for it. Like I said they're not hurting for cash and could afford it. Either that or trade for a closer. I'm not convinced Smoltz could stay healthy and/or be any good next year either, he's 42 coming off of major surgery.

Wheeler signed a 3 year contract extension in April with an option for 2011. Pretty cheap too so he's not available. I'm sure his agent right now is smacking his head against a wall right now.

Burnett is a tease. He pitches great in the spotlight then there's no pressure on him. Pretty much every scout says he'd be the perfect in Baltimore next year. Keith Law (who knows him from Toronto basically laughs when people ask him about Burnett pitching for the Yankees or Red Sox). I think it would be a big mistake.

ya, Id sooner take a chance on say trading for Street or Brandon Lyon, signing isringhausen and hoping he becomes good again, whoever. Theres 3 closers I would spend 15 million on: Mo, papelbon, Nathan. Thats the whole entire list. K rod was arguably the 5th best closer after those 3 and lidge this year.

Nice Post! I agree on all especially letting Ollie go in place of a guy like Burnett. Ollie really didn't pitch well in his last few starts when we needed it most.

Do you think Murphy can make the transition to 2B? That seems to be a hot topic.

What rough day to be a Met fan. Thankfully the Dolphin win is still fresh in my memory to ease the pain.

But seriously, I know our Pen sucks, but it seems that whenever the chips are on the table this team just cannot hit. They got 4 hits today in a must win situation!!!! F'in pathetic. They did the same thing last year and if you all remember game 7 of the NLCS in '06 they did the same.

Endy Chavez makes the greatest catch of all time in that game and you lay an egg in the 3 ensuing innings.

Johan Santana makes arguably the greatest/clutch pitching performance in franchise history yesterday and you get 4 hits today. Disgusting!

I personally think you will see one of the following three traded (Beltran, Wright or Reyes) for pitching help.

    1. Beltran, opens up a spot for Fernando Martinez or a FA signing.

    2. Wright, brings back top flight pitching and some minor leaguers. Murphy takes over at third, his natural position.

    3. Reyes, all the talent in the world, something just about him I can't put my finger on, but he is A-Rod like when it comes to being a winner. Brings back pitching or a bat with minor leaguers.
