i don't know the exact numbers so i could be wrong, but i will be willing to guess that most of our 3rd down situations today were 3rd and 5 and above.

Far cry from just needing a yard or less. Ronnie brown is nearly impossible to take down before the line of scrimmage on an inside hand-off and on the 4 and inch play you honestly, just QB sneak, guaranteed 1 inch play.

Actually thinking about it I can only remember a handful of third and shorts. Two where we didn't get it and one we did.

I think you misunderstand what I'm saying too though. I don't think going for it would have been a bad or wrong call, but I don't think punting was either. At some point you have to trust your defense to make a stop.

I would rather trust my offense to get a yard.

I'd trust my defense not to give up a long drive either though. The chances of success either way you go are nearly the same.

One thing we can probably agree on without dispute is that our special teams units killed us either way, so maybe punting isn't a good idea ever

I couldn't see the game here (except for the last 30 seconds, arghhhh). When were the 4th and 1s that we punted on?

i don't think going for it on 4th and short demeans your D at all. Its showing confidence in your Offense , if anything going for it means you are confident in your D's ability to stop the other team from capitalizing on the field position.

One was deep inside our own territory I believe (30 or 35 yard line?) which I would 100% never go for it on in a close game. You're just giving the other team points if you don't get it.

The other I dont remember the exact situation though.

i remember one was at about mid field. The one we were at the 30, was the 4th and inch play i believe, you have to go for it there.

I don't think it demeans the defense either, but 30 extra or so in field position can be a lot. If we were at like...their 40 or something I'd go for it ten out of ten times, but beyond that...

Again, the chances of not getting it are very slim. To steal a line from you, you need to have confidence in your offense to get a single yard and if you fail in your D to stop the other team.

i'm just turning your logic against you. If you think going for it means you don't have confidence in the D, then wouldn't not going for it mean you have no confidence in your D's ability to stop the other team ?

Slim maybe. We were winning at that point by less than a FG though (I believe) so why even risk that?

Maybe we get it and we win the game, it's possible. Inside your own territory though....I just can't go for it. Theres almost no threat to pass either in that situation with our WR's.

We aren't the Colts or Patriots offense, we're the Dolphins and even the plays we converted on short yardage almost got stuffed in the backfield.

relax... the guy gets beat on a play, and you want to ditch him? Everyone gets beat in coverage at some point in their careers. more often than not usually. To call for a guys job, when he was instrumental in our wins against NE and SD because he doesnt come away with a pick on one play this week... is absolutely insane.

Our D was very lax today... this was a tough loss, but theres alot for this young team to learn from it, and I have no doubts in my mind that our coaching staff will teach it to them.

can someone tell me why Will Allen is not on our opponents best receiver on every play? He is a top corner in this league and most of the time they have him covering the slot receiver. I just don't understand it.

I don't know how many times we threw the ball on 3rd and less than 4 yards. That is mindboggling. And why Will Allen wasn't put on Andre Johnson from the first snap of the game is equally as mindboggling. Don't even get me started on the prescence, or lack thereof, of Jason Allen.

    Live from the Internet.
People complain about not going for it on 4th down.
But if bell breaks up the pass on 4th and 10 (this is not a knock on bell) Then we all praise coach for being smart, and effective and that he isnt taking unnecessary risks.

:up::lol: When your defense gives you 4 turnovers and yet you LET the other team have 20 extra plays more than you; you deserve to lose!!

THE WHOLE GAMEPLAN WAS STALE AND BAD AND STUPID! In this game it didn't even look like we were planning against this team. Too much Ricky, not enough Ronnie. Too much time on the clock and timeouts. I told my wife after that TD Ronnie had. DAM, too much time left, we haven't been able to stop there passing game all day! The second half the offense was inept, no receivers were getting open... Defense were playing too much deep zone.

Amazing... had Bell knocked away that pass from Johnson we'd all be talking about how great that play with Cobbs out of the Wildcat was.

and houston fans would be talking about the multiple holding penalties that should have been called on the cobbs screen TD.

EDIT: while i laugh at them.

There were alot of blown calls in that game though, on both sides. They missed a couple holds (Crowder on the last drive) and we got lucky on a couple PI calls (non-calls). Those things even out IMO.

While the game was going on, the 4th and inches and punting the ball had me pissed. I like what Sparano has done with the team, but not going for it is a very weak call. Very dissapointed in the play calling.

That was my initial reaction as well. Sparano the tough were going to force you to stop our TOUGH team coach decided twice on 4th and inches to punt.. Why not do a QB sneak!! Our offensive line would have gotten 1/2 yards at least..

if anyone care to investigate the NE and Chargers games we had a pass rush that was preventing them from getting the ball deep? I do not remmember anyone trying to go deep on us. In the Arizonia Game and Jets Game they went long on us and we got burnt!

Yesterday again we got burnt on defense with longger ranged balls. I think this is the game plan going forward for oposing teams.. Toss the ball middle and deep.. and force our offense to start scoring 30+ points a game which is not what the current offense is designed to do..

We are progressing will not be a playoff team this year and next year we will be a better team and contend for a playoff spot. Year after we better be in the big game!

I agree. Untill we show teams we can stop it. Maybe Jason Allen. He seems to play well on game day, but not practice well.

But he didn't. So now we have to talk about the bad plays. We don't get to talk about the good stuff when you lose. That's akin to kissing your biceps when you're down in the 4th quarter.
