I think the best candidate out there for Miami is Mike Singletary. With Ireland in house as a proven talent evaluator, a proven motivator like Mike would get the best out of the players that we have and will get. He knows the game and will have the instant respect of the team. I don't see him allowing a team to get away from him, like Cam ended up doing.

    What do you think?

I agree. Singletary would be a great choice for his football passion alone.

I agree... but unless he has a history with Tuna, it is doubtful he will be the choice.

Mike Singletary wouldn't be a bad choice. I like his intensity and it's probably contagious. Problem is, he's still a bit green in the coaching world. But so was Del Rio and he's done a fair job in Jacksonville.

I think Del Rio has done a good job in Jville. I believe he has only one losing season on that team.

He is no more green behind the ears than Garrett is. I would love to have Mike . . . though its never going to happen.

How is Parcells or Ireland tied in any way to Mike Singletary?

They just cleaned house and they stated they want guys they know....so how exactly is MS a known guy to their philosophical mindset???

This is where I think people are getting confused - they said that they wanted a HC that had their same philosophical mindset but I don't remember hearing ANYWHERE that they said that the new coach had to have previous ties to the Tuna.

Singletary is an intense competitor that Parcells knows from coaching against him. Singletary is well thought of motivational speaker who understands how to get his players to perform at a high level. I think he fits well into their mindset.

The Ireleand PC he stated clearly that he and Bill talked and neither knew Cameron and therefore they didnt know if he had their mindset, and most importantly they didnt want to take the time to find out.

So, somehow someway Singletary would have to quickly explain to them his mindset because they are not going to waste time trying to figure out if his words match his actions.

I am not opposed to Singletary as HC, and was asking if there was any tie other than playing against the guy back in the 80's, etc.

I agree that he's done a pretty good job in Jax. I didn't mean to give the impression that I was downing him. When I say "fair" I mean that they haven't been eye-opping good, but have been a competitive team and occasionally playoff caliber.

We might as well interview him just to be in compliance with the Rooney Rule. I think he knows his stuff on defense, not sure about his offensive knowledge.

I would like to see Singletary as HC or DC. I feel that with his passion for FB he would get this team to be hard nosed and competitive again. If we could get MS 4 HC,and get RR for DC we would be a tough *** team.Lets go for it. Get some bad mnfers in here to run this team the way it should be.

I don't understand why anyone would think that Singletary would make a good head coach. Based on what exactly?

Based on the fact that he played well as a Bear?

He was an intense middel linebacker, so he must be a great coach??

The NFL is littered with former players that became head coaches. The best coaches IMO were all good coordinators not ex-players. Bill Walsh, Bill Parcells, Halas.

I was very outspoken on here last year about hiring Singletary as head coach instead of Cameron or anyone else. There were a few others that felt the same way but most were wanting Cameron or even Chan Gailey.

By far the biggest part of success in any sport is getting the players. A head coach mainly needs to be a strong leader and organizer that the team respects. Parcells and Ireland can get the players and Singletary would be great as the leader of this team.

I like Mike Ditka, he was a Hall of Fame TE for the Cowboys, but if it weren't for Buddy Ryan he would NEVER have won that ring.

Look at Herme Edwards, he was a very good CB, but how good is he as a head coach?

I think he is a lousey head coach. His press conferences sound like stand up comedy routines. He is denser than lead. There are some former players who have become good head coaches, but in this day and age of parity in the NFL it is usually the good coordinators, the X's and O's guys who really make the difference IMHO...

    Well away from here
maybe the fact he is the asst head coachfor the 49ers, and LB's coach and is well repsected amongst his peers. I know those are small and insignificant reasons but hey who's splicing hairs here.

Compared to being an offensive or defensive coordinator yes they do seem rather less significant. ;)

I guess the fact that the 49'ers are such an intimidating, powerhouse team should sway more people to back him?

Not that it matters but many of the legendary coaches in the NFL have been former NFL players as well.....Shula, Noll, Madden, Landry, Reeves, Grant, Ditka, and Cowher to name a few. And I know there's several current coaches that were former players as well. And I'd guess that 95% have at least played college ball.

Talent acquistion is 90% of the equation. Belichick is only a "genius" because NE drafted Tom Brady.

Actually there are people who will point out that Parcells has only won a superbowl when Belichick was his defensive coordinator. He was the DC with the Giants.

I know those older coaches were ex-players. I only mentioned Ditka because Ditka was a great hall of fame player, whereas most of thos other guys were just ex-players, and 2nd string guys not necesarliy great players like Ditka and Singletary.

Singletary has always been known as a smart football guy but did you see the clinic he put on at last years Senior Bowl? Watching his teaching sessions I wanted to run through a brick wall for him.

In order to be a successful HC you must be knowledgeable in many if not all areas number one, but just as important that individual must excel in "people skills." Or in this case player skills. If you alienate veteran players disregard your assistants coaches and finally fail to motivate your team what good are you? I don't care how good of a Xs and Os coach you may be, you're doomed to fail.

Here's a good article from USAToday:

    http://www.usatoday.com/sports/football/nfl/cowboys/2007-01-30-singletary-interview_x.htm?csp=34

It's not that he has played the game, it's not that he's intense, it's not that he has super clean reputation for me - he understands the game and he is an incredible motivator. A HC runs the team and motivates each player to play at their top level. That's why I think he'll be an excellent HC.

True dat. He will get a shot somewhere. If and once Lovie Smith moves to another pasture how wild would it be if he get his first shot with the Bears one day. Law of averages say that he will be somewhere else by then.

I have no opinion on Mike being a head coach but, as THCMAN said, sorta, his defenses arent really setting the standard.

So if we are talking about hiring a coordinator, you want one who's most recent team broke records and was considered one of the top units in the league? Congrats, you just described Cam Cameron... :D

    Not a serious choice.

He's a well thought of motivational speaker? That's what recommends him for the job? Why don't we just hire Colin Powell, or Tony Robbins, I hear they pack them in on the motivational circuit. I'm sorry, motivation at the pro level is mostly supplied by the players themselves. The Miami Dolphins will not contend for a Super Bowl until they can contend for the AFC East, and that means out-thinking, not out-motivating, Bill Belichick. Belichick and Tony Dungy are superior tacticians. Just as Bill Walsh, Marv Levy, and Joe Gibbs were. And Don Shula, Tom Landry, and Chuck Noll before them.

How Great Would It Be If We Hired Mike Singletary!

Talk about a pedigree. Talk about toughness. Intensity. High character. Man. I would love to see us hire Mike. He's the next great new coach. The next Don Shula.

See your point, but I don't think Saban or Cam were former NFL players.

Mike instantly commands the respect of the players - especially the veterans. Your point is well noted though. Anyone can leave us hugh and dry.

The only way Singletary would even get an interview is if Sparano turned us down, which I don't see. But I think Singletary would be much more interested if Miami called than just about any of the other jobs out there.

When Baylor fired Guy Morriss, they did so with the expectation that they could give Singletary a big paycheck and a chance to return to his alma mater and that he would take it. Instead, he met with the administration, toured the facilities, and told them directly that if they weren't committed to doing the things necessary to compete on a national championship level, he wasn't interested. And sure enough, within 24 hours of the interview and expected coronation, Singletary removed his name from consideration.

The ownership support has always been in the top tier of the league. Parcells and Ireland represent a substantial upgrade of our front office support. And I think Singletary's development into a head coach will be helped by having a Hall of Famer down the hall.
