So I dont really care if this posts anonymously, but I wanted to see if it worked anyway. so I just moved and have been applying to jobs, but its not going so well, so I decided to apply to a seasonal job at a Best Buy store nearby just to get some money for rent while i pursue another job. i went through a couple interviews, passed the drug test and everything, and they really liked me. so i went in today to basically get the job offer, which was a decent wage, except i ran into a problem

they apparently are having their mandatory orientation for their seasonal workers this sunday. and this is the only weekend i'm going to be out of town the whole second half of this year, because I'm going to miami to see our beloved fins as a birthday present from my family. upon telling him this, the guy immediately revoked the job offer and said if i can't make the meeting they can't hire me at this time.

my question is, do i call around to the best buys in this area and see if they are doing their orientation on sunday as well? i figure if one store was willing to hire me another one would take that as good reason to offer me a job as well. it just stinks because its such short notice. i mean, what if i just had another job that i worked on sundays or something? theres no way they can expect people to always have a clear schedule 5 days from now.

i think i'm going to peruse some temp agency websites at this point, because i have a good amount of office experience. my issue is, if i don't lock down a job soon its gonna be very hard to make next months rent (yikes!) ideas?

with the job market the way it is i'd try and see if I could sell the tickets and get back to the guy about the job. I know your family would kinda be upset they spent the money on the tickets for you but I think they would be proud of you for putting your living situation first.

Might not be enough time to really do much here, but check around all over the place. Job hunting in general is better around the hollidays at just about every kind of store out there. Also, dont forget to look into things like parcel delivery companies and some slightly less usual things along that line.

Also, I dont know where you live or what kind of education you have, but currently I work for the Walgreens drugstore corporation, and I can tell you they are almost always hiring for managers here in the Houston market, I wouldnt be shocked if they were all over. Its not a glamorous job and you start on lots of nights/weekends and such, but its decent paying for a starter job. College degree isnt required, but is helpful. Its not a great short term solution, but if your looking for something a bit longer term, might be worth a look. Im sure other such operations like CVS or RiteAid are the same way, but personally I would go with Walgreens. Failing that, check out options like being a Photo tech. Thats what I do atm. Its not a hard job, pays like $8.50 to start with, and many stores are usually looking to hire.

At any rate, around christmas I wouldnt think you'd have to hard a time finding seasonal employment in the retail world. I dont like to advise passing up a job like that, but it sounds like your family really went out to do something great for you, I would be hard pressed to tell you to pass up a special event like that. You only live once and missing out on cool things like that is something I wouldnt make a habit of.
Make some quick phone calls around this week to find any leads and see what you can come up with. Again, think hard about the game. It is just a game. Im writing this assuming that maybe youve never been to a home game before, or dont have the finances to view more than 1 every few years. If you go to several anyway, you might want to skip it and sell the tix, but if this is kind of a once in a great while event, you might not.

Either way, make sure you take a hard look at your personal finances and set up some budgets. Cut out any nonessential stuff and save all you can. This is a tough economy atm, and if your changing cities, coming out of college, switching careers etc, finding a job is a definate headache. My biggest advice is to think outside the box and look at places that you might not think of right off the bat. Some jobs may suck, but if your only intending them to be part time maybe you can be a Wal-Mart cashier or Target stocker or Macys overnight cleanup crew for a few weeks you know?

I would take whatever was available to me and then continue looking for something better. In the situation your in where it sounds like a "back against the wall kind of situation" its more important to get money flowing in. Of course Id sooner move back home then pay rent and miss a dolphins game bought and paid for! Pride isnt that important! :)

You're a seasonal hire. If they are having everyone else come in on sunday, there is no reason they should bend over for just one person.

Sucks that it didn't work out for you, but nothing wrong with the employer's decision IMO.

BTW, you need to use better lighting next time. I could barely see your face in some of the shots :shifty:
