I think Vazquez is more likely. Omar loved him back when he was the interim GM of the Expos. And the White Sox have been trying to trade him for what seems like an eternity. Plus, with the focus on improving the bullpen, picking up an innings-eater to occupy the 4th or 5th spot in the rotation takes a lot of pressure off the 'pen, and potentially allows them to move Jon Niese back there for the time being.

I guess I don't see the value Byrnes would bring to the team. Yeah, yeah, he's a nice guy to have in the clubhouse, and he gets his uniform dirty and all, and baseball announcers love to rave about his heart. Unfortunately, he's not a very good baseball player. He's got speed, but he doesn't get on base enough to have value as a top-of-the-order hitter. He's a corner outfielder with mediocre, at best, power. His 2007 year was great, but it was pretty clearly a fluke. I'd take him for Castillo, but then, I'd take a lot of players for Castillo right now.

Well with Byrnes its my opinion that youre getting a player with substance. He may not get on base at a great clip but he plays hard kind of like Victorino does/did. He would also be a solid 7 hitter in the lineup who can make some things happen with his speed. Ive never viewed him as a top of the line up guy anyway.

With Vazquez he definitely eats innings but hes basically another Ollie Perez. A guy who pitches well at times, eats some innings but hes not great, and definitely isnt what Id call a big game player. Byrnes may be more rah rah then his stats should let him be but you could say that about a lot of people on this team as it was last year. Getting him and Lowe would definitely give this locker room more in the way of accountability and give the stars a solid supporting cast standing behind them.

According to Metsblog, K-Rod may have taken an physical with the Mets. That only happens when the terms have been agreed upon or their reasonably close. Come on Omar, you have choices unlike with Wagner, make em take 3/27 and a 4th and 5th year options for 10 mil apiece or just move on. Whatever you do dont give any closer not named Mariano Rivera or Jon Papelbon the insane amount Krod asked for (5/75)

According to El Universal, Francisco Rodriguez traveled to New York City ‘to be checked by doctors,’ in advance of eventually signing a contract with the Mets, according to a source linked to the closer.

“The Mets have made the best offer so far,” the source tells the Venezuelan newspaper, “though I know he wanted more money than what was offered.”

I'm almost positive that rumor has been shot down and the source (El Universal) has been wrong numerous times in the past. For example they said last year the Mets and Livan Hernandez had a done deal.

    Per rotoworld:

Agent Paul Kinzer confirmed that there was nothing to a report out of Venezuela saying Francisco Rodriguez had flown to New York to take a physical for the Mets.

The original story was simply too sketchy to justify reporting. Perhaps the Mets and Kinzer have already had some discussions, but there's nothing to suggest that a deal is close.

    So there you go.

The source, El Universal, was also the first to report that the mets had signed Pedro a few years back. Typically they are very hit or miss but yet even after that report was shot down this comes up the next day:

“Francisco Rodriguez and his representatives will come to New York early this week to take some physical exams,” according to Mets beat reporter Rich Coutinho, citing ‘sources,’ on his blog for 1050 ESPN Radio’

Coutinho reports the Mets have given Rodriguez a contract offer, ‘with the Mets hoping for a three-year deal and a fourth year club option, while K-Rod would like at least four years of guaranteed money.”

However, last night, according to MLB.com, Rodriguez’s agent, Paul Kinzer, said, while he has been in contact with the Mets and other teams, “no offers had been made by any club.”

Similarly, Andrew Marchand from 1050 ESPN Radio is reporting on air that Rodriguez did not have a physical this past weekend, as others reported today as well.

However, Rodriguez told reporters in Venezuela on Sunday that he had been in the United States to get a blood test and take an MRI to verify his health for teams who are interested in signing him, according to Lider en Deportes.

    …i don’t know, man…something isn’t adding up here…

…i’m not suggesting one person is right, or someone is wrong…but, i think it’s pretty clear there is a bit of scrambling, spin and miscommunication going on here from all sides for a variety of reasons…

…from what i can gather, on my own, from people i trust, the Mets have interest in rodriguez, but things are simply playing out in a standard, slow-and-steady fashion…end of story…the rest of this just reads confusing…and i can understand why reporters, executives, agents, etc., getting frustrated with these reports…

At any rate, according to Coutinho, the agent for Rodriguez, as well as the agent for Brian Fuentes, have both promised Omar Minaya the opportunity to match or top any offer they deem acceptable from other teams.

Also the below should be required reading for any mets fan. It makes a pretty compelling case for Kerry Wood being the guy we should sign as a closer. Its an idea I havent really thought about yet but wouldnt be opposed to as long as we have an injury alternative like acquiring Street.

Why would Frankie give the Mets the opportunity to match an offer? That seems kind of ridiculous to me if it's true. I'm glad he isnt getting the money he was looking for. I thought the Angels made him a good offer last year 3/34 I believe. And I wouldnt be surprised if they'd have been willing to go a little higher after the season he had. But giving the Mets the right to match is wrong imo.

Good read about Kerry Wood. I honestly never thought of him coming to the Mets, but that was a really good break down of the many options the Mets are looking at this offseason, and Wood would be great if he continued to pitch well if signed. Obviously DL time pops into the head when I think of Kerry Wood, but if we had insurance choices, why not take the chance?

Cause hes a money player, which is exactly why I dont want him unless hes going to be reasonable. he thinks the Mets will outbid everyone and bid against themselves. He doesnt realize the Mets are run by Freddy Coupon.

5/75 for a closer is laughable. Hes the 4th or 5th best closer in the league right now after Lidge, Papelbon, Rivera, and probably Nathan and wants 167% more then Rivera? 3/34 is exactly the highest I go for him, 4th year club option for maybe 12 mil to bring it to 4/46m. Anything higher then that skip him and just sign Wood or trade for Street or Jenks. :wink2:

The Mets are weighing which top free-agent closer to pursue -- Francisco Rodriguez or Brian Fuentes -- and while no offer to either appears imminent, indications are strong that Mets people are leaning toward Rodriguez over Fuentes now.

Mets decisionmakers worried earlier about the suggestion that K-Rod would demand Mariano Rivera money($15 million a year) on a five-year contract. But with those fears allayed, the momentum seems to be moving toward K-Rod, who saved a record 62 games last year for the Angels while going 2-3 with a 2.24 ERA. The Mets would love to sign Rodriguez to a three-year deal, but with intense competition expected, may have to go to four years.
Mets people have concerns about K-Rod's drop in velocity but are encouraged that he was able to reinvent himself with a changeup as his pivotal pitch. K-Rod is also seen as a pitcher with the type of flair and personality who could thrive in New York. The Mets are aided by a glut of available top bullpen arms, including free-agent closers Kerry Wood and Trevor Hoffman plus trade possibilities Bobby Jenks, J.J. Putz and Huston Street.
For now, though, K-Rod appears likely the Mets' top target.

I came up with a offseason plan that would be perfect:

    Dear NL East:

As the Mets makeover their roster we have decided to spread our wealth of talent and give you all a gift.

To the Braves: Aaron Heilman...so maybe we could finally win a couple in Turner

To the Phillies: Scott Schoenweis...the homers will be a plenty when hes brought in to face Delgado, Church and/or Beltran

To the Marlins: Duaner Sanchez...this should put you overbudget.

To the Nats: Luis Castillo....Hell wouldnt take him so this was the next best place.

No need for thanks or compensation of any kind.

    Your pals,

    The New York Mets

Then sign Manny, Wood or K-rod or Fuentes (whichever contract is most reasonable) and either Lowe or Burnett. Trade for street. Sign Izzy, Joe Biemel or Juan Cruz to be the 7th inning guy.

Nice. You should always make ultimatums when you're coming off a season with a 5.21 ERA.

Now, that said, I expect Heilman to improve next year, though probably somewhere other than NY. His walk and home run rates absolutely shot through the roof, and so I would expect some regression to the mean next year in both those numbers. His walk rate nearly TRIPLED last season. That's not likely to repeat itself.

However, I think that Heilman's confidence is shot. I think he knows the Mets aren't moving him to the rotation, and this is just his way of trying to force a trade. He probably needs out of New York, and after last year, I don't think I'd be sorry to see him go.

I think we'll end up with K-Rod, and I'm certain we won't have to go to 5 years to do it. Just for ****s and grins, I'll guess the contract: 3 years, $42M with an option for a 4th year, perhaps triggered by some performance bonus (i.e. 30 saves and a 4th year kicks in). The closer market is VERY much a buyer's market this year. The Mets can sign K-Rod and probably get someone else, maybe Huston Street, as an 8th inning guy.

Looks like we're trying to get Furcal for 2nd:

Furcal revealed that he has been offered a four-year, $48-million contract by the A’s that includes incentives that could push its value to more than $50 million.

Furcal said he has also received a substantial offer from the New York Mets, who want him as a second baseman.

“The offers made by the Athletics and the Mets of New York are tempting, but we’ll make a decision after I meet with my lawyer because there are various factors that we have to evaluate,” he said. “But my general feeling is that every offer that’s been made is important, which is why we want to make a decision that’s well thought out.”

Furcal’s agent, Paul Kinzer, said last week that he thought his client would sign a four-year deal.

Yeesh, I'm scared to death of giving Furcal 4 years and $48M (or more). The guy missed 126 games last year (and 34 the year before). I love him as a 2B option, but for four years, that's a MAJOR gamble.

I would agree with that. Reminds me too much of Castillo. However on a 2 year deal hes a lot more of a dynamic player then Castillo with better range and a stronger arm. Luckily it doesnt say we offered 4.

By the way by all accounts Hudson wants to be a met and is willing to wait until Castillo is dealt. His range has declined but he seems to be a great clubhouse guy. Maybe something along the lines of 3/18-21m would be our best bet. :hi5:

With all things being equal, if the Mets can get Furcal to play 2nd and his exams look good they better jump on it. He's a better player than Hudson all around.

Imagine a line up of Reyes, Furcal, Beltran and Wright at the top of the order and defensively. Wow.

If you could guarantee me that Furcal would play in say 80% of the games over the next 3 or 4 years I would hope the Mets would jump at that. But I think Phunwin is correct, because while its an awesome scenario its also unlikely it will be in effect for half the games. Really when you think about it, Furcal is Castillo just not nearly as diminished but with all the potential to fall off as quickly. His game is entirely dependant on speed and while he is unquestionably a difference maker now one more bad injury and he could easily turn into another gimpy 2b no different the what we have.

Hudson is less risky and for a team thats pretty fragile right now they could really use his stability and leadership in my opinion. If they feel Murphy cant make the transition this is the obvious choice to me though I dont like that his OPS has fallen for the last few years.

    The priorities should be:
    Manny
    Lowe or Sheets or Burnett
    Closer, hopefully Wood
    Setup, hopefully street
Trading heilturd for Sonnastine or even Jackson (per the rumor weeks ago)

2B is down the list unless they feel Murphy isnt the answer.

Take a look at Hudson's stats and his games played. I believe he's only played over 150 games once in his career. I think Hudson is just a big of an injury question mark as Furcal is right now. I also don't think it looks good that Hudson has missed the past 2 months in the last 2 years.

Hoffman would have been the perfect closer for the Mets in 2007 to go along with their leaky pen. Seriously why would you even touch Hoffman? Everytime the guy gets put in a big spot he blows it and that was before he turned into a dinosaur.

If you get him, you will be able to use him once in a series, after that he gets knocked around pretty good. I think he should of retired but he didn't want the 4 million the Padres were offering, then asked to speak to the owner John Moores, and the offer was pulled.

Meh, I agree with the sentiment here, I want no part of Hoffman, not even as the 7th inning guy. He was struggling to get his velocity in the mid 80's and like FFIC said his placement of the ball was pretty bad. He was a great closer at one time but that time has long since passed.

My guess is that Hoffman will insist on being a closer, the Mets will say "no", and that will be that. He'll probably end up with someone like Milwaukee, who will pay him a low base salary with an incentive-heavy contract (i.e. 20 saves = $2M bonus, 30 = $3M bonus, etc.), and they'll watch him post one of those Joe Borowski-type seasons where he saves 35 games but gets shelled doing it.

I'm putting it on the record here, if I haven't done so yet: we'll sign K-Rod, say 3 years, $42M with an option for year 4. I believe we'll trade Heilman and a B- prospect (maybe Parnell, who I do not like at all) for Huston Street. And, I think we'll take a flier on Chad Cordero for a one year, make-good sort of deal. And that will be the bullpen makeover we've been searching for.

    NOOO!!!!!

Mets may be talking to the White Sox about acquiring Jermaine Dye and Bobby Jenks. The cost? Fernando Martinez and others.

I would HATE dealing F-Mart in a deal for those two. Dye is an every-other-year player, and Jenks' K rate is plummeting, which seems to go directly against what the Mets want for their pen.

dye isnt a horrible pick up, but i really wanna see what fernando has first. i know its not completely the same (because we got johan who is damn well worth the trade 10 times over), but i still wish we had carlos gomez, who is very raw, but also improving. i just dont wanna lose another top tier prospect.

Meh, I would hate that as well. If Fernando gets dealt the only player he better be dealt for is Peavy or Halladay (should Toronto change their minds). Otherwise they can ask but not receive F-Mart. Fernando and Wilmer Flores should be absolutely positively OUT of any trade not involving a true stud pitcher.
