I like Sheehan a lot.

But for me, I think Bobby Abreu is a better fit with Cubs than the Mets....

 

Well, I don't expect any of that plan to actually come to fruition. There's no evidence the Mets are interested in Abreu, for openers. They've been focused on finding a right handed bat. I also think K-Rod at 3/42M is more likely than Wood at 3/33.

Id rather have Wood over K-rod I think so I have no problem with that. I do like Juan Cruz but not at that price. Hes been on 4 teams already and had 1 save and has not been as good as he was last year on a consistent basis. That would also be drastically overpaying for a guy that cant close. Get Street or Putz or even Feuntes to pair with Wood. Give yourself options.

I like Abreu as a player but there's 1 major thing that would bother me about him playing Oin Citi....that is he is afraid of walls. Why do I point this out? Well, Citi has a large RF and in LF theres a gap where the wall sticks out some. For a guy afraid of walls and who's defense has declined some the last few years I can see either of those spots being a disaster for Abreu. I do however love his bat as he is always amongst the leaders in pitches seen per AB and a legit 300-20homer-100 rbi-100run-20 steals guy which makes him a Beltran clone (less power, more BA/OBP, less D) and thats a good thing.

Lowe wouldnt bother me at all but hes nuts to pick him over CC. Lowe had an awful first year in LA, a great contract year (go figure!) and was decidedly mediocre in between. I wouldnt go to 4/62 to get him. I would rather get Burnett at that price as we would have him through his prime at that point. I stop at 3/40 for Lowe with maybe a 4th year 12 mil option that vests at say 90 starts over the first three years.

And Im not in favor of anything that keeps castllo on the roster.

 

Assuming they do it for 3/37, that's a better deal than I predicted.

 

I could live with 3/37 even though hes still not my first choice. Still this is just the beginning as we need 3-4 more quality relievers and someone to replace Ollie; a 2B upgrade and another OF are very necessary as well.

 

Eh, I like Tek but not as a full time player at this point in his career. Id rater keep Schneider then have him or Irod as my full time player. Schneider could still be a type A FA at years end even though right now hes technically a type B; the difference would be two additional picks. Varitek is a type A so we would be giving a draft pick to sign him and we are already doing that for K rod and you would be doing it for Ibanez as well.

 

Would Schneider qualify as a Type A? I didn't think he was good enough for that. If so, then absolutely, we should keep him and let him test the market.

And yes, I agree, at this point in their careers, I would happily take a Schneider/Castro platoon over Tek or Pudge. Signing Tek or Pudge would be nothing more than a "name" signing to try and appease the fans. In fact, Schneider is likely to be better than either of those guys next year.

 

As it stands right now Schneider would be a type B next year as hes rated as the 9th or 10th best C in the NL. But with a good year he could leapfrog a guy or 2 ahead of him in to the 8th slot. And since the rating is based off two years its not inconceivable if he has a good year in a contract year.

 

K-Rod signs 3 year deal with Mets. It's official. You gonna need more than that to beat my Phillies. But good signing!!!!!!!!!!!

Hey I thought Billy Wags said he would never pitch in NY again? Can't wait for baseball to start back up. I do think KRod helps you out and is a big upgrade over Schoenweiss/Heilemann (spelling?) you just need some middle relievers now. I am looking forward to seeing where CC, Peavy, Lowe, DeRosa, Burrell, Manny, Fuentes and the other FA's end up. I think the Braves will be better, the Marlins worse, and the Nats about the same (I hear Manny is going to the Nats )

Good start, Omar! Now sign Cruz, swap Heilman and something else for Street, move Castillo for a bag of sunflower seeds and sign Hudson, and we're golden.

 

FYI, theres a 4th year vesting option on K-rods deal for 14 mil. The total deal is 3/37 + 1/14 = 4/51. Still way ahead of the 5/75 Krod thought he was getting. Nice job by Omar, even though Krod wasnt my first choice. Now sign Feuntes as a setup guy or get Street. Juan Cruz wouldnt be bad but high profile FA Mid RP's seem to rarely work out so that does get me nervous.

I wonder if Erik Bedard isnt available for pennies on the dollar. This team also needs a RH bat...I wonder if Ichiro couldnt be had with his ridiculous deal as well. Could free up room for the M's if they want to go in a different direction.

 

Not sure why Frankie turned down the Angels offer just to accept basically the samething w/ the Mets...I hope his arm falls off now lol.

Its not the same deal bro. Its 1 mil more per, a 4th year vesting option that he gets as long as he can basically throw a baseball, and a team that showed they wanted him. Personally, I would have preferred you kept him and just signed wood but they werent going to do that with the wagner injury debacle that basically cost us last year. Theyre going to point to K-rods healthy track record and health over anything else.

 

When I typed that I hadnt seen the 4th year option yet. So 4/51 I can understand. 3 mill seems like a wash unless he wanted to leave town, but I think both sides basically just moved on.

Im sure he'll do fine in NY, he's got some years left in him. We worked him hard, but his changeup will prolong him if it continues to improve. He's a nice first piece towards rebuilding that pen and he didnt cost a ridiculous amount. I mean if Francisco Cordero can get 4/46 than signing Frankie for what you did the year after he sets the saves record isnt a bad move.

 

I like Niese but he better not hold up anything good. Capps is a solid fireballer who can step in and close as needed. It would create another need though in the rotation meaning we would have to sign/trade for 2 sp's.

Thats a nasty young pen and a rotation with huge upside if Bedard can finally realize his potential like he started to with Baltimore. And Washburn, as bad as he can be is a legit 200 innings guy. Makes more money then you would like but hes only got a year or two left.

Per Ken Rosenthal 5:05 p.m. — Mets' trade offer shot down

The Mets, seeking a setup man for new closer Francisco Rodriguez, were rebuffed in their attempt to trade right Aaron Heilman to the Rockies for righty Huston Street.

Heilman has drawn interest from more than a dozen clubs. The Mets turned down the Cubs' offer of righty Jason Marquis. It seems inevitable, however, that the Mets will find a match.

Street, too, has drawn interest from numerous clubs. The Rockies have yet to receive a tempting offer.

 

Per Rotoworld: The Mets have scheduled an afternoon meeting with agent Scott Boras, perhaps to discuss Derek Lowe and Oliver Perez.
Reports are mixed on just how close the Yankees and Lowe might be to an agreement. However, the Mets do seem like long shots there. They have a better chance of keeping Perez, though they're not going to give him the five-year, $70 million deal he wants.

 

Per Metsblog...The Mets are about to get JJ Putz.

Mets right-hander Aaron Heilman, outfielder Endy Chavez and first-base prospect Mike Carp are in the deal, as is Indians outfielder Rickey Gutierrez.

 

Adding to FOXSports.com's Ken Rosenthal reports, MLB.com says Joe Smith, Luis Valbuena and Jeremy Reed are all likely involved in a three-team J.J. Putz deal.
The particulars still aren't known, but MLB.com believes the Indians will get Smith from the Mets and Valbuena from the Mariners and give up Gutierrez to Seattle. That suggests that Aaron Heilman could also be Seattle bound, probably with Mike Carp. MLB.com believes the deal is on the verge of being done.

Yeah he is. Was awesome as closer two years ago, not quite as good last year but was also injured. Hes set up before and closed

 

Sounds like way too many guys moving to difference places to seem true but hey stranger things have happened. If it does go down you have to tip your cap to Omar as a pen with both Putz and K-Rod is a very nice start, especially since all they have to give up is a really a 5th OFer, a RP and minor league 1B for someone who was a top 5 closer in 2007.

 

Done deal!!!! Mets got Putz and dumped Heilturd in the same deal.

The deal is done, according to Ken Rosenthal at FoxSports.com, “J.J. Putz is headed to New York in a three-team trade with the Mariners and Indians,” according to major-league sources.

The Mets will soon release a press release that says the deal is as follows:

Sad to see Endy go I hope that this Jeremy Reed dude is a worthy bench OFer.

 

Yeah I was upset that Endy was dealt but I think his role was too narrow for us. We badly needed to change the bench/support personnel and we have started down a great path.

I wont ever forget the "holy ****" chants that rocked shea after that ridiculous catch vs St Louis.

As far as Reed, hes basically Endy with more upside offensively and at 1/3rd of the cost. He was once considered an elite prospect (much like church!) but his bat has not yet developed the way the M's hoped. Hes a Lefty bat with rare power but I think he can still develop as a contact hitter. He needs to be more patient at the plate as he gets fooled easily by off-speed stuff from the little I have seen. Still, with some seasoning, he may be a nice 5th OF/emergency type.

 

Kind of surprised Putz doesnt mind being a setup man.

 

Its amazing what being on a 110 loss team will do to ones ego! We still need at least 1 more good arm though.
