The cry has begun! I knew were in total meltdown mode and I guess it's nuclear at this point. Here's the story from the Rocky Mtn News for a linky. Shanny Gets The Axe
Cowher will not go to Denver, the only reason he was talking to the Jets is his daughters work and go to school in Jersey. His wife is in NC, he wants to be close to them.
The Broncos are my least favorite team outside our division but I think this is a mistake on their part. They field a competitive team every year. Shanahan has his share of draft blunders but he is still a very good coach. Outside of Cowher I don't think they'll upgrade over Shanahan. It would be a good gig for whoever they get. They have an outstanding young offense in need of a durable RB but the D needs a major overhaul.
Well Rico, this is already causing major riots in the Bronco fan land. I've been a fan for 34 years and I don't know what to think. I'm thinking like you that this is a big mistake and we will now fall to the pond scum level. But wondering if our young guys will react to a new face. Wow. This is a lot to take in.
Wow Mike Shanahan is one of my favorit coaches ever. It is a shame to see him go but he was there awhile. I dont know if I would have gotten rid of him maybe go out and find new corrdinaters.
Many say losing Kubiak on the offensive side of things to Houston was a huge start to a decline. But we fans under stood Gary's angle and wished him well. We have been through 5 DC's in 8 years.
I see the spoiler and not sure what to think. You say you hate him. Bronco fans are on both sides of that and Plummer discussions have already surfaced. Jay has said some things taken out of context but at the same time, it's like say what? He gets more criticism than he deserves in his young pressure point career. He scored the most important job in Colorado and all lights were shining on him. Our fan base is passionate, loyal and spoiled. I sat through the Elway early days, I can certainly do it again with Cutler and hope for sooner results.
Shanahan had a great run, he took the Broncos to back to back Super Bowl wins with Elway. Times change, and so do coaches. I wish him the best wherever he goes, he's a good guy.
Thanks for that. Our own message boards have almost divided in the sad to see you go vs. the get the hell out. I became a Bronco fan in 1974 when I was moved to Boulder CO when I was 12 and that was it. I have loved and supported this team through thick and thin. Always will. BUT>>>>> Still wishing you guys luck this year.
Thanks man, my sister lives in Fort Collins out in Colorado, and they're kinda pissed about the whole thing, and they hate San Diego like I hate Florida State at this point. I hope things work out for you guys, the Broncos are a good team with lot's of talent. I think there's a lot of promise in store for them.
The Broncos fired Shanahan the GM, not Shanahan the coach. Shanahan is a great offensive coach, but he needs a good GM evaluating defensive talent and defensive coaches for him. I just hope Shanahan doesn't end up with the Jets, which will suck royally for us, as he fits the "big cities need big names" inferiority complex the Jets have.
I thought it was a smart move to be honest. As much as Shanahan did for that team in the 90's, he hasn't been so good lately. He's an awful talent evaluator in my opinion and he thinks to highly of the roster he assembles. He's not a good self-evaluator. he never got the defensive staff in place and the talent or therefore lack of on defense showed me that he's not a good talent evaluator and thinks highly of his roster. I like Shanahan, been a fan of him, but I felt that it was time to go for him. They need to start fresh. They've got some pieces on that team (Marshall, Cutler, Clady, Royal, Bailey) but they need a lot of work in my opinion. Have a link? I saw them firing both.
alen1, They are one and the same person, I was speaking metaphorically not literally. Just saying what you said, i.e. he sucks at identifying and evaluating defensive talent and coaches.
I agree with the move. I think Shanny looked alot better for having Elway and Terrell Davis than he may have been. I think his ability to evaluate talent is suspect, especially defensively, but some questions on offense as well (Jake Plummer really?). He is a great offensive mind, and has some pretty good schemes, but I think the game was passing him by in Denver where he hasnt fielded a decent defense since Elway and his offenses have been streaky and spotty. I called this as a possibility near the beginning of the year that if Shanny went another season without a playoff spot he would be in danger. Ultimately, his teams late season collapse and handing of the division to the NORV TURNER lead Chargers was the final straw. Im sure some team will snap him up quickly, but they had better not give him GM control. Someone else needs to oversee the defense and hiring of coaches and talent evals.
I want Mike Shanahan to go to the Detroit Lions I think he will do good there and I also dont want any of our coaches going there
I am really shocked by this canning. The only real equivalent in NFL history was Paul Brown getting dumped by the Browns after the 1962 season. Also another equivalent would have been if the Robbie family had decided to get rid of Don Shula in 1988 or 1989. Fortunately they did not, and really good seasons happened in 1990, 1992, and 1994 happened.
IMO Mike Shanahan is one of the best coaches in this league, and this is a huge mistake by the Denver Broncos. I thought maybe Pat Bolin tried to take some of Shanahan's personnel duties ala Mike Holmgren. But according to Bolin that never came up. If I was one of the half dosen teams looking for a coach (except Oakland) I would have Shanny #1 on my list.
Im a bit surprised that they just fired him, unless we arent being told the whole story. I figured theyd go after his GM position (a much needed move). Maybe Shanny had previously said its both or nothing. Either way, I still say hes a bit overrated. Take away Elway and what is he? Even with Elway it took to the latter part of his playing career to finally get a ring. And since then they havent done much. I think as JUST a coach, he will find success elsewhere. If hes responsible for being a GM and talent scout as well, Im not sure he will. Theres always two minds to these things. Do you do like the Titans and Fisher or the Steelers and Cowher, or do you do something like Tampa with Dungy/Gruden?
Well, Denver has had talented teams in recent years, and Denver hasn't made the playoffs in at least three years.
