Think higher than 18 Alen. Mavre looks like he may transfer, now you have Daniel Adderly, Ian Symonette, Kylan Robinson, Jared Campbell, Tervaris Johnson, Chaz Washington, Shawnbrey McNeal, Jermaine McKenzie and possibly a few more looking to transfer and add the graduating seniors look for a class of at least 25 bare minimum.

Randy Shannon in an interview with Manny this morning also stated he is looking at a class between 25 to 27 signees.

Really, it went up that much? I remember him saying 18. Excuse my incorrect info then Joey, I apologize. McKenzie is staying from what I know.

    Man.

    Where to start.

With all due respect to Padre31, you know I respect you very much and I think highly of your opinion, I can't figure out where you came up with the comments about Jacory Harris not being able to drop back and read defenses. I just can't. I sat here, took notes of plays and players and I'm trying to figure out where you saw this. Now to Jacory Harris, he looked good tonight in my opinion. I think he looked very good for a 2nd career start to be honest. He thrown some good, nice spirals. Made a deep throw to Leonard Hankerson that traveled right around 30 yards in the air and landed a 40 yard completion in the end on a seven step drop. He lead an opening drive touchdown after halftime including a touchdown on a five step drop, reminiscent of his high school days. He read the defenses pretty well on that drive in my opinion. He made some smart plays such as scrambling out of the pocket to buy time and hitting his man as he's going out of bounce. He found his man in a soft spot of the zone and hit him for a first down. He has made quite a few smart choices in this game in my opinion. I noted a play in the second quarter in which he went through his reads, was flushed out of the pocket and ran for a first down. On that same play, I felt that he could have kept his eyes down field and hit a wide open receiver across the middle at the 13:50 mark in the 2nd quarter but nonetheless, he gained a first down with his feet. Moving on to Harris' bad habits, I noticed that he locks on to his receiver and because of that, he threw an interception with four Golden Bear players around Aldarius Johnson. He's still a freshmen so that's understood but he'll have to work on that. Moreover, he didn't keep his eyes down field when scrambling a few times as noted a couple sentences earlier. Once by my count, he didn't throw the ball away and he took a sack. He had room to scramble and throw it away but chose not to, instead trying to shed a tackler and look down field. Unfortunately for him, he hasn't realized that you can't do this when the defensive ends weigh twice as much as you do and are stronger than you, unlike high school where they were all near the same range of weight class. In the two minute drill, he took too long to snap it and then stayed in bounds on a run in which he could have bounced out and stopped the clock. I think its alright though because its part of the growing pains. He showed be a lot tonight in which I think he can become a good quarterback for us. In the end, I thought he played VERY well for a guy that was limited and when I say limited, I'll get to that in a short while. I felt that he was the one who kept us close in the game and I feel that he's the right guy for this team moving forward.

Moving on, the offensive game balls have to go to two players. One is Jacory Harris for the reasons above and the two is to LaRon Byrd. Byrd made some tough catches including across the middle, up high, where he was vulnerable for a big time hit and he ran sharp routes. I liked what he did in this game.

Going back to the offense and Harris' limits, I was awfully disappointed and not surprised in our OC's game plan. I have to ask, why so conservative? Why? Honestly, 5 dink and dunk passes to Greg Cooper out of the backfield and three jump balls. That was the offense in the first half. Had four situations of 3rd & 6 or more because of the short passing game. That's not good, especially for your freshmen quarterback with his 2nd career start. Seriously? Two plays out of your playbook? Two? Man. Awful job on his part, just awful. If he sticks as the OC next year, I don't know if I will be able to watch the games. I know Jacory Harris and Aldarius Johnson have ties from playing together in high school but 3 jump balls to the same guy? Same play, same player. Run something different! And if you do go to a jump ball, don't throw it to the receiver who has a 6'3" defensive back on him. I highly doubt he will snatch it over him. Pick on Devan Hagan, you know the guy who can't play the ball when its in the air? C'mon Nix.

Moving on to the run game play calling and the offensive line coaching, just terrible IMO. The offensive line was not prepared for this game at all in my opinion. I realize that the Golden Bears defensive line is quick and strong but allowing your man two yards into the backfield on every play? Small hyperbole with the 'every' but just about. At one point in the game, 2:34 mark in the second quarter to be exact, Jacory Harris hiked the ball and the Golden Bears defensive tackle was sitting five yards into the backfield as soon as he hiked it. I thought he was offsides but I watched the replay and he blew past the interior line and blew up the whole run play. Furthermore, why run up the gut when your getting dominated in that area? I simply don't understand the line of thinking there. The two times we had success up the middle were runs by Lee Chambers. I noticed that we doubled up on their defensive tackles with our guards. I didn't see us go back to it at all. I have to ask why? Other than his runs, we were awful up the middle. In the first half, we went exactly 6 times to a stretch and counter play. In those six plays, the yards gained was 6,3,6,5,2,10. If my math is correct, the average per carry is 5.3. That's good. Better than the one or two up the gut. Simply don't understand it.

Moving on to defense, we played an average game. I say average because we were good on pressuring in the pass game but horrific in the run defense. In the pass game, we pressured their inconsistent quarterbacks all night and they weren't able to get it going from what I saw. Outside of one play, which was the first touchdown of the game, I saw Bill Young make a questionable selection of defense. I watched that play and I saw Brandon Harris playing at the LOS. Brandon Harris isn't strong enough at this point in his young collegiate career to bump and run with wide receivers and it showed on that play. He got beat bad on it and to top it off, our Safety wasn't lined up right. He was in the box for whatever reason, instead of playing over the top in case Harris was beat. You can't play these young guys at the line of scrimmage IMO. They're not at that level yet. Furthermore, I watched DeMarcus Van Dyke and I wasn't impressed. I know we talked about him struggling in the zone defense this year and he's been beaten bad in man to man coverage as well. I was watching him and I noticed that he didn't flip his hips well at all when running, meaning basically that he didn't change directions when going at full speed and then turning in the other direction, keeping up with his man. If he struggles in the zone and doesn't have the hips to play man to man, what is he good for? Why's he out there? When it came to the run game, we did pretty well when they ran up the gut. Outside of that 28 yard run from Best in the 3rd quarter - blame our DT #96 on that -, I felt we did good up the middle run stuffing. However, when it came to playing lateral defense, absolutely no discipline. -0- discipline. Over-pursued every time or the first tackler missed it. 2 missed tackles in the first two minutes on defense. 8 missed tackles through three quarters by my count. Three missed tackles in the fourth. We simply can't play run defense laterally, it reminded me of watching the Cowboys earlier this season, prior to Wade Phillips taking control of the defense. You could run a counter or a stretch play on the defense all day long and not one will shoot through the gaps and make a play and they'll over pursue. We weren't very disciplined in this game, Jahvid Best made us pay. Kudos to him for the big game by the way. Impressive but he is a Cal back so no surprise.

I have to give some props to some of our guys though. I already mentioned Jacory Harris and LaRon Byrd. The other guy I must mention is Sean Spence. An absolutely marvelous game by him from what I saw. Those instincts and great football IQ that me and you (Joey) talked about earlier in the draft forum, they were on display tonight. Sniffed out two screen passes, leading to two TFL's. He laid the wood on the first screen pass he sniffed out. He showed very good closing on an out route that was thrown by Nathan Longshore. I was very impressed by his game once again. He's going to be a big time player for us IMO and I can see him at the MIKE spot for us because of how smart he is. Marvelous player. Enjoy watching him play.

Two guys and a group that I will give props to from the opposing team are CB Syd'Quan Thompson, the interior offensive line of Cali and Jahvid Best. Best is clearly one of them for reasons we know why but I watched Syd'Quan Thompson tonight because he's a guy that could be headed to the draft. With the smallish 5'9", 187 lbs. frame, you'd think the guy isn't going to like contact. I've seen a few CB's who are bigger than him and are like that, Mike Mickens of Cincinnati coming to mind. He's very willing in run support, he changes directions very quickly, he returns punts, and he plays the ball in the air well unlike the high-profiled Macho Harris of Virginia Tech. Thompson is a good looking player whose looked at a mid round grade at the moment from what I read. He doesn't play at the line so long speed comes into question but he's a good player in my opinion and wasn't tested often in this game. I recall only one throw in his direction to Aldarius Johnson, in which Thompson batted the ball away in the air. Finally, the interior offensive line of Cali did a great job tonight. They pulled well, Alex Mack dominated in the run game from the occasional peak I saw of him, redirecting players to open up gaping holes and same goes for the Right Guard.

Kevin, these are my thoughts lol. Sorry, kinda long.

By the way, Bruce Johnson excellent cover skills? That's what ESPN's commentators are saying. I don't see them. No way. He got tore up by a freshmen earlier this season against Virginia Tech I believe. He doesn't have very good cover skills, he lacks the leaping ability and quite frankly, I'm still scratching my head over the late first round grade that ESPN gave him prior to the season.

Alen thanks for the detailed and excellent review. Our thoughts are VERY similar. I too believe Nix is retained only if Shannon goes into a coma. He has to go. He is not a D1 OC and not what Shannon needs if this team is to ever realize its full potential in a couple of years, when the talent will maximize.

DVD is a waste of space......and I really thought he was going to be special coming out of HS, but its not gonna happen with him. And as for Sean Spence....he is a flat out STUD and will be out next great defensive player, playing eventually on Sunday's.

So Alen who do see us going after if Nix is.....ahem.....nixed  Maltzahn ?

Glad to hear we share the same view. :)

He does have to go though, Nix is just awful. That game cemented my hatred for his playcalling. Wish I would have thought of taping the game so I could rewind plays and look more into them, instead I forgot.
Spence is definitely impressive. I think he will be a good MLB in the NFL.

    Nice one. :hi5:

Indeed. Malzahn is the top guy on my list.

Sorry about the loss as well guys. I don't understand whats wrong with Miami right now. The place I keep looking is your head coach. You guys can blame Nix all you want however you still have to look at the guy thatb hired him.

Something to keep in mind is that Harris hurt his shoulder and was not at full strength. I see him improving and putting on some weight next year.

My concern is with Nix. I just don't see what his game plan is. It doesn't flow. If you run the same play 5 times for -5 yards at some point you have to move on. There are about 10 plays he runs over and over again regardless of result. How can the fast Miami WR’s not be thrown the ball on quick slants or curls?

What has happened to Cooper? I thought the play calling was really bad for him until Chambers comes in and starts tearing it up. He needed to make big plays this year and didn't for the most part.

The D will improve next year with the influx of talent. The upperclassmen on D played smart football but just got beat physically. That should turn around next year with new blood and experience in Young's D.

Shannon has a year left to win the ACC title or I think he's gone. I've said before he will never be a great coach. He is a great recruiter and needs to be surrounded by top coordinators. Miami is missing the bus on keeping Nix.

I'm so unbelievably tired of Randy Shannon. I've seen enough. He doesn't have a clue about what he's doing. I could get ANYONE to say, "hey why don't we recruit more Miami players." That doesn't make him anymore special than say George Seifert. Randy Shannon has been the common denominator in the slide since Coker. I've had enough after the Cal game. Something smells rotten in Coral Gables.

I want to know exactly what the plan was for the 2-minute offense. But that isn't my only complaint, only the absolutely most glaring especially since it was on primetime TV.

Again, something smells rotten in Coral Gables. I cannot believe so many players just don't know what they're doing or are garbage.

Disagree Alen, the problem is not his numbers or his arm strength, it is how he moves, his actions as a Qb, he is a very very rough Qb at the moment, and IMO, his problems are not due to being a Freshman, they are do to deficiencies in his game.

I've seen far to many Qb's who are alot like Harris, they are great when they have time and a inferior opponent, once the game matters and the small things matter, they never seem to "get it".

For example, you mentioned he didn't keep his eyes up field when he was under pressure, what I see is a Qb who doesn't know how to sidestep pressure consistently, that is one of the things a successful Qb needs to be able to do, you'll also have noticed his ball handling when under pressure, it's been a few days, so the memory is a bit fuzzy, however when pressured or contacted, Harris left the ball at hip level as he attempted to escape.

That will lead to fumbles, he has time to develop, I'll grant that, but as a prospect...raw as a pound of ground round Alen.

I echo my comment from a couple weeks ago. If Marve wasn't talking about working as hard as he could to be the #1 guy at Miami then good riddance. I think it will be good for the team to show that Shannon will not tolerate just getting by. Marve had multiple opportunities to redeem himself and always ended up in trouble.

Robert Marve deserves nothing because he has earned nothing. He slacked off, didnt go to class, got arrested and didnt ever try to be the Canes # 1 anything. His heart was never in it, from the moment he found out he would be splitting reps with Jacory. I think this is good for miami, the 2 qb system never works - ever. And personally, i think Harris is much much more talented. I also think shannon needs to stop calling anything but the defense. His time management skills are worse than Coker's. He is a heck of a recruiter, and an awesome Def Coord., but a Head COACH he is NOT.

Does Mr. Marve mean "shameful" like getting suspended multiple times or being involved in a situation where the police are called? Maybe he should teach his son to be a man instead of crying like a little girl. Maybe they both should look up the term commitment.

Damn right every recruit should take notice. If you come to Miami you are going to be expected to excel as a player, student and a person. If you can't handle it then go play for someone like USC.

The Marve family is really showing their true colors right now by badmouthing Randy and the U. I think we come out looking good here no matter what happens.

There are reports of Marve badmouthing the U and RS to former teammates at Tampa-Plant and getting them to decommit. I cant think of the players name but one decommited already.

EDIT: The player is Orson Charles. Plays both WR and DE.

To play devils advocate, I think Mavre may actually have a legit gripe in all of this. It's been rumored more than once that Shannon promised Jacory a certain amount of playing time year one to get the kid tied down. If in fact that's true I don't think I wouldn't have been peeved either if I was Marve.

There were times this year in the beginning when Mavre and the offense showed some great signs of life, started getting into a rhythm and inexplicably in trots a true freshman at QB. The QB split rarely works IMO and I seriously question Shannons handling of the situation and what his motivation for that split duty rotation was. Dissention of this magnitude so soon in Shannon's time here isn't a good sign IMO. If he can't recruit players without making promises that may hinder the teams play and development in a season then he can't recruit the right way. If Mavre leaves and becomes a top college QB, Shannon will look to be the fool.

In addition I think it's been pretty clear that game management skills, game planning and the inability to adjust have shown to be lacking under his control as well. I don't have a good feeling about Shannon at this point.

I hear what you're saying and I agree that a lot of it may be true. But you cannot expect the QB job to be handed to you at any D-1 school. While I agree there were times where Marve excelled and it looked like the offense was getting into a rhythm - there were equally just as many times when Jacory was in where the same thing happened. There were times where inexplicably both were taken out. If Marve was that good - why couldn't he beat out the true freshman? He had a year head start in the offense and still couldn't do it and at times he pressed things throwing inexplicable passes that resulted in interceptions. He pressed because he felt the heat of the true freshman who was getting similar results when he played and the kid wanted out. The competition was too much.

I think Marve resented Shannon for insisting on playing Jacory and for that he did not behave like the model student Shannon expects from his players. The kid was not going to class and got talked to. He started showing up late and got talked to. Then he didn't show up again and got suspended. He is a student athlete not an athlete student. Marve thought Shannon's rules didn't apply to him and thats whay he kept getting into trouble. Aside from Sam Shields - who got into more trouble the last two years?

Marve's heart was never with the U. He was a solid Alabama commit until Shula got fired. I'm happy to see him go and I wish him well.

Padre, he's a freshmen. How many freshmen in the NCAA do you know come out firing out the gates and look like they've been playing at the collegiate level for 3 to 4 years now?

When he didn't look up the field when scrambling, he would have had to make that throw across his body into the middle of the field. The man was open but he settled for the safe first down run with his feet. I can't blame him on that. You see Padre, he did sidestep pressure in that game. I saw him take off twice I believe in that game and that was after two reads. He didn't have a man open and took off. He stepped up in the pocket and delivered throws as well as side-stepping pressure and even rolled out of the pocket and made throws for a first down on several occasions.

Blocking him from the ACC was a natural decision as you dont want to face him in the future. Mavre's Dad, Eugene and Mavre's old High School coach shopping Mavre to SEC schools back in October is the reason for the SEC ban.

Not only is it against NCAA rules to talk to other schools about a possible transfer while enrolled at another, it is just plain dirty, under handed and sneaky.

You really think Randy Shannon was going to let Robert Mavre transfer to an SEC school after breaking the rules and having contact with him before he was released from scholarship? That's like letting the neighbor you don't like next door come into your house, open your fridge to shop for his groceries.

Robert Mavre is a whiny little punk that expects everything handed to him without having to earn it and his dad and high school coach are doing him no favors by coddling him and putting this crap in the papers.

Big deal, it cost us one recruit from Plant in Orson Charles. The guy was going to be an HB anyway for us. Besides, if that is the reason Orson dropped us because of listening to whiny a** Marve complain about Shannon then I don't want him at the U anyways.

I think this is what we all have to remember. He was never in his heart a Miami Hurricane. We were always his backup plan.

There have been rumors for months now that Mavre was not happy with splitting time with Jacory and that his father was soliciting overtures from LSU and a few other SEC schools for his sons services. That my friends is breaking NCAA rules.

Do I fault Shannon for allowing terrible play **** management in the Cal game and a few others? Hell yes I do.

Do I fault him for being unwavering with Mavre? No way, he has to ban him from the SEC. You let a coach get away with it once and they will keep trying to pluck kids away from your school. Mavre needs to shut up and head to the PAC - 10, Big 12 or the Big East. End of story.

They are blowing this whole situation way out of proportion and are only making themselves look bad in the process. Think about it, if you are a coach at another school and you see Mavre and his family whining about Shannon wouldn't you be a little leery of taking him? I know I damn sure would be.

Again I agree with every word Joey :wink2: This should only end with Marve being put in his place. Randy should report any SEC schools that have done participated and make sure they get sanctions. There is a penalty for doing this.....right ?

If it is proven without a shadow of a doubt the NCAA could step in and issue sanctions yes. Chances of that happening? Slim and none in my opinion. I think Randy will keep quite as to not ruffle any other coaches feathers.

This whole thing should go away as soon as Marve picks a school to transfer too. After that happens I can guarantee you the new coach will tell him to shut his trap and get to work.

A lot of different names being thrown around at this point and most of it is just conjecture. Who would I absolutely love see take the spot? Rod Chudzinski, but I highly doubt he steps down from being an NFL OC to be the Hurricanes OC.

    Hey, I can dream can't I?

You know what really pisses me off about the whole Mavre fiasco? The kid can actually play at any school he wants to and there is nothing Miami can do about it. He would just have to sit out one year as standard and would not be able to be on scholarship, meaning his parents or he would have to pay his way for one year.

If he decided to go to another ACC school though, he would have to sit out 2 seasons. Thats why I say he only makes himself look like that much more of an a** for creating all of this media garbage against Randy.
