Ya, its probably due to injuries regarding Fernando's rating. Flores is a baby, 17 now, and the kid looks like he may be in Queens by 2011 and he'll still only be 19. And Holt just needs to refine his secondary pitches but he has the stuff to be a top of the rotation guy or a big time ace out of the pen.

    Other news:
SI.com's Jon Heyman believes the Mets and free agent Oliver Perez are too far apart in negotiations for a deal to be reached.
Heyman lists the Brewers, Dodgers, Reds and perhaps the Mariners as potential suitors for Perez. He's believed to want $14 million per season for five years.

    Francisco Rodriguez-R-Mets Dec. 18 - 3:20 pm et
Mets manager Jerry Manuel indicated that J.J. Putz could be in line to share save chances with Francisco Rodriguez in New York.
"That's very, very huge for us in the course of a 162-game schedule to have [more than one reliever] that can close games," Manuel said. "[K-Rod] doesn't have to save, say, 75 games. The other guy [Putz] can save 35, whatever. That's big for us." Yeah, sure. K-Rod is going to get all of the save opportunities he can handle. Backing him up with Putz in fantasy leagues might not be a bad strategy, but Putz isn't looking at more than 3-5 saves if Rodriguez stays healthy.

The Mets are waiting for agent Scott Boras to finish off the Mark Teixeira Sweepstakes before they seriously engage Boras in negotiations for their top two pitching targets, Derek Lowe and Oliver Perez.

The Mets are hoping to sign one top pitcher. Lowe appears to be their first choice on the Category A list, followed by their own Perez. Third on that list is Randy Wolf. Mets people love Lowe's consistency and durability but will try Perez if the price on Lowe is too high (figures being mentioned last week at the Winter Meetings were $66 million for four years).

After the Mets try to secure one pitcher from Category A, they will try to sign a pitcher from Category B, which is the less costly list. Pitchers on that list include free agents Freddy Garcia and Tim Redding, plus Cubs starter Jason Marquis, who's available in trade with the Cubs believed willing to pay about half his $9.5-million salary.

    -Heyman

    Another interesting thought:
So the Mets will find themselves in a curious spot. One year after being the most aggressive bidder for a closer, the Mets could be the clearinghouse next winter. With K-Rod signed on for three years and $37 million, the Mets will have to consider whether to keep a setup man with a closer’s salary next year – or to hold Putz up for auction.

And there is another factor to consider. The Mets still hold an option for 2010 on Billy Wagner’s contract at a reasonable $8 million. Reports are that he is ahead of schedule on his recovery and could possibly return in September. If he returns and is healthy, he could have value, too, either on the trade market or as a set-up man if the Mets were to move Putz.

The New York Mets are among the teams in contract discussions with Derek Lowe. The veteran right-hander is a free agent again after spending the past four seasons with the Los Angeles Dodgers. Now the Mets are making a serious effort to secure his services.

In 2008, Lowe was 14-11 with a 3.24 ERA and surpassed the 200-innings mark for the third time in four seasons. Lowe is expected to command an annual salary somewhere between Ryan Dempster's $13 million and A.J. Burnett's $16.5 million.

The Braves, Dodgers, Angels, Red Sox, Yankees and Phillies all have expressed interest this winter in Lowe, who is believed to be leaning toward coming back East. The Yankees are awaiting Andy Pettitte's decision to accept an offer.

The Boston Globe first reported the Mets' renewed talks with Lowe.

Lowe's addition would be brillant. I think he is better suited for NL, and like many pitchers once they get a taste of it, would prefer to remain vs. come back to AL.

I like Lowe and prefer him over Ollie but ultimately my gut tells me the Mets want to resign Ollie for a variety of reasons.

-Hes lefty and the phils cant hit him. Neither do the Braves hit particularly well.
-He dominates other lefties. (See: Howard, Ryan)
-He pitches reasonably well in big games.
-Hes a uniquely different lefty then Santana or Niese. Hes wildly effective for the most part though there are games where he makes you pull your hair out (See: Giants, San Francisco back in June or July)
-If he could ever cut down his walks he could outperform most any contract you gave him because most teams/players dont hit the guy particularly well the last few years.
More so then Lowe he could outperform his contract. Even the most ardent Ollie hater cant dismiss he still has untapped potential that we have seen glimpses of but who hasnt come out consistently. Whichever team could harness that and get it out of him on a 30 start per year basis could get an ace like performance.

I have a feeling the Mets are using Lowe's 3 year contract (possibly 4) to try and keep Ollie's demands in check and get his price down. As much as I prefer Lowe's consistency, I know Omar love's high strikeout guys and that is not Derek Lowe. Also Omar made some remarks in the press recently about his mistakes in regards to signing older players, specifically referencing El Duque and Alou. Given that, I have a hard time believing he would risk repeating those mistakes even with someone who has much less injury history but who is looking for a long term commitment at an advanced playing age.

My instincts tell me he is playing a waiting game with Ollie and if he feels it cant be won he will go the route of a trade.

If they make that move they are trying to package castillo into the deal, which I don't think the dodgers will want. Apparently the mets are really trying to rid themselves of castillo so they can go after Hudson. This is at least what I heard on WFAN today...

I like Hudson more then Castillo because hes a better locker room guy and a slightly better player but if theyre going to give him a big contract Id pass. Hes simply not that good.

As far as Andruw Jones thats a risk Im willing to take and actually LOVE the idea of. We could drop him low in the order where theres less pressure on him. The Dodgers are eating a healthy portion of that contract, we're probably not giving up much of anything, and the reward is as high as 41/129. If it doesnt work out, so what, theres only 1 year left on the deal anyway and LA would be paying a healthy chunk of it. The guy is only 32 and my instincts tell me hes still got a few more good years in him. Id much rather have him playing everyday then Tatis.

The question would be then, what becomes of Ryan Church since Jones would likely be playing RF?

    Reyes
    Church
    Wright
    Beltran
    Delgado
    Jones/Murphy/Tatis
    Schneider
    Slapstillo
    Pitcher

If only Murphy could play 2B that lineup would be sweet.

    Thank goodness!!!!!

There's probably a better chance of Cleon Jones playing for the Mets next season than Andruw Jones. Although an ESPN report last night indicated the Mets and Dodgers were in trade discussions that could potentially make Jones the Mets' new right fielder, a person familiar with the situation said it won't happen. Jones' name was mentioned to Mets GM Omar Minaya several weeks ago, but the discussions never intensified. Jones, the biggest bust in baseball not named Barry Zito, is due $15 million in 2009 after batting .158 with three homers and 14 RBIs last season.

Lowe reportedly gets three-year offer from Mets

The New York Times reported on Tuesday that the team has offered free-agent pitcher Derek Lowe a three-year contract for about $36 million.

Agent Scott Boras would not confirm that the Mets' offer.

    Per rotoworld:

A source familiar with the negotiations told the Boston Globe that free agent Derek Lowe is likely to continue shopping for a more desirable offer than the Mets' three-year, $36 million proposal.
It may not seem like there's much of a market for Lowe's services at the moment, but someone will offer him close to $15 million per year. It's just a matter of whether it's one of the teams that Lowe would prefer to play for. The Red Sox, Yankees and Phillies all seem to be on the sidelines at the moment.
    Source: Boston.com

    Also:

T.J. Simers of the L.A. Times has heard that the Dodgers are working on a deal to unload outfielder Andruw Jones.

Simers claims that the deal would save the team $12MM and "send the guy, who couldn't hit a thing, seeking employment elsewhere." Jones is in the final year of a two-year deal and is set to make around $15MM in '09. He's not just going to forfeit that money, so it's not exactly clear what kind of a deal Simers is speaking of. A trade? Buyouts don't typically happen in baseball. What are the Dodgers going to offer him? A yacht? Nonetheless, Simers is onto something and it appears the Dodgers are readying the cash to make an offer to Manny Ramirez.

Haha, does not surprise me that Boras is getting greedy with the Mets deal.

Free All-You-Can-Eat buffets for life? That'd make more sense than any trade. Woe is the team that actually acquires him and the $12mil.

Mike Fitzpatrick of the Associated Press reports the Mets have made an offer to Tim Redding and are readying one for Randy Wolf. The Mets need two starters and are also looking at Derek Lowe and Oliver Perez to fill out their rotation. No details on the offer to Redding. Fitzpatrick cites an unnamed source.

In 2008, Redding won 10 games for a team that didn't win 60, finishing with a 4.95 ERA and in 33 starts and 182 IP. In November he had foot surgery and is expected to be ready for spring training.

Looks like theres some stuff going on finally:

We have 3/39 on the table for Lowe (Per NY Daily News)
We now have 3/30ish on the table for Ollie (Per Jon Heyman)
The Braves may have gone to 4/60 for Lowe (Per the AJC below)

"But I’m also guessing the AAV (average annual value) is probably going to have to be $15 mill or so in at least a three-plus-an-option deal, if not a four-year deal. We’ll see. He wouldn’t say how many teams have made offers or when a decision might be made."

    http://www.ajc.com/blogs/content/sh.../01/11/t_hanson_d_lowe.html#comment-230101303

Per the AP, Redding is willing to pitch in relief or start (sorry cant find a link):
"NEW YORK (AP) -- When they pitched together in the minors a decade ago, Tim Redding equaled Johan Santana.

While they keep looking for another starter, the New York Mets hope to see Redding match some of his own numbers from 2008.

Redding completed his $2.25 million, one-year deal with the Mets on Monday, saying he would pitch in whatever role the team wants.

"Starter, reliever, it doesn't matter to me," the right-hander said on a conference call.

Redding made 33 starts for Washington last year and went 3-1 against the two-time NL East champion Philadelphia Phillies. He was 10-11 overall -- leading the Nationals in wins -- with a 4.95 ERA."

Well, we lost out on Lowe. Would rather have had him than Perez. 3/30 (or so) isn't going to get it done with Ollie. I think we need to start making a push for Ben Sheets.

Not sure Sheets is worth the risk (depending on the contract of course). Word is his shoulder/elbow is really messed up and he might not pitch at all next year.

I would love to get sheets but I still feel a blockbuster trade coming. No one else is going after Ollie and I suspect we're going to land him cheaper then expected. He carries a huge amount of risk leading the NL in BB last year and with a 28-30 record the last 3 years. It may not take more then 3/30 to sign him which could eventually end up as a great signing then us though I suspect Ollie will always be the type of pitcher who leaves you wanting more. Then again, Randy Johnson didnt blossom til he was 28 either.....

I think we could see names like Oswalt, Bedard, Peavy etc talked about more now with the Lowe signing gone and all thats left is the high risk/high reward signings of Sheets and Perez. Just a hunch....:wink2:

    Just found these also:

    Mets Sign Alex Cora
By Tim Dierkes [January 13 at 10:29pm CST]
According to Rob Bradford of WEEI, the Mets signed infielder Alex Cora to a one-year, $2MM deal. The 33 year-old hit .270/.371/.349 in 179 plate appearances in '08 while playing both middle infield positions for the Red Sox.

    mlbtraderumors.com

Cora is good. As good as Castillo anyway and finally gives us a good backup for Reyes on occasion. Could do worse though 2M is a bit high. Not bad though as he should be a good guy in the locker room...and who knows, maybe hes Manny's buddy and Manny will tag along? :)

    per MLBTR:

MLBTR chat: Chatter increasing about Sheets/Mets

1:55 Do you think Ben Sheets is a viable options for the Mets now? If healthy, I think he would be a good fit behind Santana.

1:56 He certainly is. We still havent heard anyone mention the idea of a three-year offer for him. If I'm Sheets, I might be thinking one year rather than two. The Mets seem like a nice fit and the chatter is increasing a bit in that regard.

take it for what it's worth of course.....

    Arbitration numbers:

Church got 2.8m up from 2m last year
Pagan got 575k up from 401k last year

Those two deals were reached with the Mets prior to actually going to arbitration.

Maine is asking for 3m; the Mets offering 2.2.
Feliciano is asking for 1.95m; the Mets offering 1.35m

    http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2009/baseball/mlb/01/20/mets.church.ap/index.html

The good news is that even if the mets lose both cases they will still be about 25m under last years payroll enough to sign Sheets AND Perez if they really want to solidify their rotation.

Howard just strikes me as greedy in everyway..greedy at the arbitration table, certainly greedy at the dinner table...etc.

The mets, as I have said are about 23 m under last years payroll after the arbitration hearings the other day at about 120m (last they were at 143m). Its possible it may not be Sheets or Perez, it may be Sheets AND Perez and that would, if the rumors are true, represent at worst a slight increase in payroll over last year.

Then we still have to see where Manny, Abreu, and Dunn land. The Mets could very easily swoop in and get one of them for LF though according to below it wont be manny :(

) -- The New York Mets aren’t interested in signing free-agent Manny Ramirez, according to the team’s chief operating officer, Jeff Wilpon.

Wilpon said General Manager Omar Minaya hasn’t proposed adding the outfielder, whose 527 career home runs rank 17th in Major League Baseball history.

“I know the perception out there again is that ownership said no,” Wilpon said today in an interview at Citi Field. “I don’t have the opportunity to say no because Omar hasn’t brought it to me as an option. Omar and the baseball staff aren’t interested.”

Freddy Garcia is a Met. The righthander agreed to a minor-league deal with the Mets tonight, the Daily News has learned. It's believed he can earn as much as $8 million to $9 million if he makes the team and reaches all of his incentives.

I love the Garcia signing. A minor league deal with a ton of incentives is a great move. And it's worth noting that Minaya has had success pulling guys off the scrap heap and making them valuable contributors.

It sounds like it's Sheets or Perez, but not both. I'd rather have a 1 or 2 year deal for Sheets than a 4 or 5 year deal for Perez.

    :nono:

Kirk Radomski, a witness in the Mitchell Report, said on ESPN Sunday that he twice took urine tests for New York Mets pitcher Dwight Gooden.

Radomski, 39, was the team's clubhouse boy from 1986-95. He has a book coming out today and claims to have sold performance-enhancing drugs to more than 200 players.

Gooden tested positive for cocaine use, not steroids or human growth hormone.

Claims Radomski: "He came in one day and he came up to me and the pee guy was there, as we called him. says, 'Could you pee for me?' I said, 'Doc, what am I going to do? How are we going to do this?' So I said, 'Let me think about it.'

Sources: Mets closing in on deal to keep Perez

The Mets, pushing to solidify their starting rotation, are moving closer to re-signing free-agent left-hander Oliver Perez, according to major-league sources.

The team is "trying to hold the line" on a three-year deal for Perez, one source said, but a vesting option for a fourth year remains possible.

ah damn, 3 more years with 17 of 34 starts being less then quality and leading the league in walks.

Oh well. The only positive; and I have to keep saying this just so I dont bang my head against the tv stand whenever ollie pitches: Randy Johnson didnt really get good til he was 27. Please let him be a late bloomer
