http://msn.foxsports.com/nfl/story/7656142 Also, Savage said the Browns have begun talks with quarterback Derek Anderson's representatives on a long-term contract. Anderson, who began the season as Cleveland's backup, threw 29 touchdown passes in his first year as a starter and was selected as a Pro Bowl alternate. Looks like the crazy 790 rumor is gone.
It's bait. They want some greenhorn GM to really believe it in order to get a quick offer. I'd worry if I was a Vikings fan.
well he would have to have a long term deal in place before he is traded where do the Browns find the cap room? they have a billion $ spent on the OL
That's true but it's much easier if you are the trading partner to have input of what that contract would be.
let them keep him. trade up to snag Quinn only to let him sit on the bench. the Browns must think everyone except them are idiots.
Wherever anderson goes, he will receive a long term deal. So Cleveland trying to get him signed does not necessarily mean hes staying there. If they can get him to a good deal, it may make him more attractive to trade suitors.
I saw an interview during a Browns game where their GM stated that they had the cap room to keep both QB's on their roster that it was a good thing for them to have 2 quality QB's and most teams would love to be in their situation. Anderson was a suprise and Brady was doing good and with both they liked their situation since the competition would just make them better.
It really depends on how it is structured. They can also just negotiate the contract with Anderson on behalf of another team.
But then wouldn't his contract count against the Browns' cap even if he were to be traded? I believe that's the way the NFL's cap rules are structured- the signing bonus would count against the team that signed him or some accelerated portion of the bonus and contract. I think about the deals Wanny and the Fins didn't make for a much younger Trent Green and Matt Hasselbeck and think maybe getting a guy with this much talent at the most important position for a 1 and a 3, especially if the Browns give back a pick, might be the best thing Miami could do. I like Beck but the jury's way out on him. Its out a bit on Anderson but you have to like what he showed this year especially if you have the room and ability to bring in better skill position guys in the offseason
Signing bonus would be accelerated. But I don't believe a roster bonus would. He can also be working out a contract with Cleveland that wouldn't be signed until he is traded (e.g. Washington and Denver a few years back)
Rotoworld says that Savage indicated that Anderson is off the table as far as trade talks. http://www.rotoworld.com/content/playerpages/player_main.aspx?sport=NFL&hl=111234&id=3233 Thank God. I would of Trent Greened myself if we gave up a 1st and 3rd for him.
I live in Cleveland and have watched / been to most of their games this year. The kid has some skill but benefits from his line quite a bit. In an offense like theirs, full of weapons and no pressure, he can play extremely efficiently because he slings the ball. In Miami he would be terrible. Give Beck the reigns for this year and bring in a FA to compete.
Saying they're "loaded" is a bit of a stretch. The Colts are loaded on offense, the Patriots are loaded on offense........The Browns lack the 3rd and 4th receiving options that elite teams like the Colts and Patriots have. As far as the OL goes, I think you have to give some of the credit to Anderson for having not only the awareness to avoid the rush, but the brains to also throw the ball away if he was under pressure with nobody open. There are some QB's that will just sit back and take the sack if they're under pressure.....
They can keep Anderson, I still think John Beck is going to be a real solid QB for years to come.Ireland was pretty high on him during the draft as well.So let's see what Beck can do and let's get to work on our Defense.
Nice. You're right, Spielstedt would be the one who would blink. Having said that, though...within reason, could you ever really give too much for a franchise Quarterback? Remember, "within reason."
To think that is great, it is what we all hope. But when it comes to QB, you can never hedge your bets enough unless you have three proven starters on your roster. And while we all hope that Beck is everything the team wanted when they passed over Brady Quinn to draft him, the fact is he didn't show any cause for any REAL optimism in his performance this season. If he does not develop into at least an adequate QB, then it would have been only the minimum due diligence on the team's part to put a backup plan in place at the most important position in football. Any less than that would be irresponsible.
Anderson is the real deal. You guys are underrating him alot. He did great, and I only see him improving. They should so sign him to a long term deal. You got a sure thing in Anderson, and a project in Brady Quinn. With their past luck, Cleveland needs to keep Anderson and announce him as the franchise quarterback, and accept that drafting Brady Quinn was a nice mistake. I see them trading Quinn for a 2nd rounder, not this year though, after 2008.
Not to mention Winslow, Edwards, Jurevicious and a 1st year starter friendly schedule. We would be idiots to give a 1st and 3rd for a 1st year starting QB with all those other variables, no question about it.
I hope he signs a long term deal and this removes him from trade rumors.....lets put those to bed asap.
i really dont think he is a good QB he has ALOT of Talent with the Browns if he was to come here his TD and INTs would be the other way he would have like 20 or so picks
The talent on that offense is overstated...... Good running game, very good #1 WR, and a great TE. That alone is probably enough to make an above average offense, but they have very little after that. Joe Jurevicius is a below average #2 WR and after that, they have absolutely nothing. Their next leading receivers were Jamal Lewis and Jason Wright. Anderson's receiving corps isn't close to what the Patriots and the Colts have. Most people also forget how much Edwards and Winslow stepped up their game once Anderson started throwing to them. Everybody seems to point to the OL, or Edwards/Winslow, nobody ever stops to think that maybe DA had a little something to do with their success.
look the 790 rumor is not a rumor, DA is a restricted free agent, and depending on the contract that cleveland tenders him, the compensation that cleveland would receive for him is a 1st and a 3rd, if we would of offered Welker $500,000 more, new england would of had to give us a first rounder to sign him. So it is not truly a trade, but more like compensation as a restricted free agent.
Idk if he is the real deal, usually the "real deal" needs more than 15 games, but he did have a great offensive line, they only gave up like 18 sacks all year!!!
He reminds me a little bit of Tony Romo, but obviously a lot bigger. Derek Anderson is physically great and has age on his side. I'm not sold on him yet, he had a good year but he also had some atrocious games which he threw away for the whole team (see the last one against the Benglas which kept them out of the playoffs) when his decision making and execution was more like A.J. Feeley when he was with us. I definitely don't want to give up our first or second for him. I would be interested in some kind of trade though, we don't know whether he is going to get better or worse from this point on. If he stays in Cleveland or goes to another team and is a pro bowler next season then it will be a missed opportunity for us. I would happily take a gamble with our third, and I think they would maybe take that.
IMO, the Browns should franchise Anderson and see if he repeats his success................ The Brownies are screwed through, even if they give Anderson one year franchise deal. The number for the one year deal(for Anderson) and Brady Quinn's rookie contract is going to eat into their salary cap.
Our 2nd and 3rd round picks would be the equivalent to most teams 1st and 3rd round picks. If the Dolphins really are interested in dealing for DA (assuming he is on the trade block), I see no reason why a reasonable deal can't be worked out. Not sure how it would work though, we would have to negotiate with Anderson's agent with the knowledge that the only way we signed his client would be if we traded for him 1st. There's no way we offer him a contract as is, given what we would forfeit.....
Every QB looks bad from time to time, it's just a matter of how often you look bad. In Feeley's case, he was bad far more than he was good.
Yes but we only have one season's body of work to judge Anderson on, and he had several games where he was poor this season. The man turned the ball over a lot more than an upper echelon starter should. Like I say, it is only his first season, and he could come back next year much better a la Romo. Or he could disappear.
How many good seasons do you expect out of a 24 year old? 20 turnovers isn't too bad when you touch the ball 573 times. Anderson is one of the very few quarterback's I'd support the Dolphins trading a draft pick for.
quinn will lose money if anderson is stays long term, if they sign DA they have to be looking to trade quinn, maybe bill talked to chariie weiss and figures he take a shot at quinn
Bollox This is rubbish. Apparently you haven't really watched Derek Anderson, or in fact studied his numbers closely. His quarterback rating crashed in his last 9 games. He got worse as the season progressed. He had a 100+ quarterback rating 4 times in his first 7 games. He never cracked a 100 rating in his last 9. Only cracked 90 once. Had 2 50 ratings, and 4 games of a 75 rating, or less. He ranged from awful to mediocre for most of the season. As good as he was in the first 7 games of the season, his quarterback efficiency was 17th in the league for the season, behind many guys that didn't have a fraction of the weapons Anderson had. His completion percentage was only 56%! Cleo Lemon completed 56% of his passes. Anderson's completion percentage was the lowest of the top 24 quarterbacks in the league! It wasn't even close, the next lowest completion percentage in the top 24 was 4% higher than Anderson's! The interesting thing about Anderson is this, the Ravens, desperate for a quarterback waived him. He was picked up by the Browns and spent nearly 2 years on the Browns' roster, where he was scrutinized closely by a franchise that also desperately needed a quarterback, and they still decided to draft Brady Quinn anyway, and give up picks to do it! The Browns obviously weren't convinced they had a franchise quarterback. And there isn't a hell of a lot in the record to prove he is. Why don't we just reacquire Sage Rosenfels while we're at it? He was more efficient in Houston with less than Anderson had to work with, only one great player, Andre Johnson, missing for half the season, no running game, substandard offensive line, etc. Even a guy like Tony Romo, who often just looks like he's heaving the ball, and playing by his shoestrings, had a completion % a full 8 points higher than Anderson's. The guy is fool's gold.
The real people who should be getting long term deals are Braylon, Kellen, and Joe Thomas. They made a backup QB look like a Pro Bowler.
The only way Savage would discuss a new contract with Anderson is if he's planning on trading Quinn. Quinn wanted top 10 money so settled for an incentive based contract. If he continues to sit, he won't be happy. The Browns are going to have to deal one of those guys. This is just their way of saying the price is going to be high.
