Ive been dieting since October 25th, 2007. I lost 31 pounds so far which im loving (im at 200 pounds now).

basically i get up everyday and "break-fast" with a yogurt, so my metabolism doesnt shut down. i usually get on the treadmill after for an hour or hour and a half. ive been told that doing that EVERYDAY, isnt a good idea...ive been told that doing the cardio 5 days a week (or 6 maybe), is a lot better for the metabolism. i tried it twice and it looks like it works well, but im still not sure if its a myth or not. i cant imagine its BAD to do cardio everyday, but if they say its better for the metabolism to do it 5-6 days a week instead....maybe.

i used to do fasted state cardio, then decided it was better to eat something before, better for metabolism.

You need to let your muscles rest inbetween workouts, its not good to do it everyday. And you always need to eat, you should never workout on an empty stomach.

I have lost 50 lbs by doing a mixture of cardio and strenght training, and yeh, you actually can do more harm then good by working out too much. 5 days a week is really enough, if your in better shape 6 isnt a bad idea. I do something called "interval training" with my cardio. It is a short intense workout that has worked wonders. The idea is to increase your heart rate for so many minutes and then rest and repeat like 3 or 4 reps. It kicks your butt, but its a great feeling.

Cardio is not great for weight loss, you need to do weights also, that's where you burn off the calories.

 Huh? Cardio is great for weight loss. Weight Training is great as well. Cardio after Weight Training is even better! :)

I think there is some confusion in the everyday thing. Weight Training everyday isn't the best idea but Cardio everyday isn't as bad. I would still take a day or two off though. Internal Training as previously mentioned is really good for you and works well.

Different things work for different people, cardio first thing in the morning is a pretty hot topic in the exercise world. Some people swear by it while other people say its bad for you and burns muscle.

Unless you have a hormone problem that acts as an obstacle for weight loss, the matter is fairly simple. If you burn more calories that you consume, you will lose weight.

Anaerobic exercise such as weight lifting, uses stored carbohydrates while aerobic exercise like running quickly switches over an alternate metabolic pathway once stored carbohydrates are burned up. That process called, beta oxidation, relies on oxidation of fatty acids (fats) to produce precursor molecules to regenerate glucose (gluconeogenesis) for energy used (your brain needs about 100 grams of glucose a day)

Unless you lift weights to deplete your glyogen stores, it is not the fastest way to lose weight.

Yeah, that! I just spent a year learning all that (and my head still hurts!)

Hey Mal, burning fatty acids can also lead to Ketogenesis also, and having acetone in ones body is not a great thing!

Now you did it, you have me talking A&P again!!!

Its not the best way, the best way is a mixture of Cardio and Anaerobic exercise.

Hey, my major is Excersice and Movement Science, this is all the stuff I'm learning.

Lipolysis, Gluconeogenesis, Glycogen synthesis, Glycogenolysis, Glycolysis, Ketogenesis, Lipogenesis, Protein catabolism, protien synthesis, Proteolysis.

Correct, however there is a difference between "Not the best way" and "Not Good". Cardio is still good for you regardless if your weight training or not.

A mixture of the two is obviously the best way, and depending on your goals the order in which you do them is very important. If your looking to burn fat and build muscle make sure your doing your cardio after your weight training. Aerobic activity immediately before anaerobic activity is believed to be counter productive.

my point was cardio is not the best way to loose weight, a mixture of both is the best. But doing Cardio 6 and 7 days a week is not good either, you need to let your muscles repair.

You could do Cardio one day (say jog) and the next day lift weights (upper body), but you should never lift 6 or 7 days a week or jog 6 or 7 days a week.

    I agree

7 days a week is just crazy.

I know quite a few people that get great results out of cardio 5 days a week and weight training 3-4 days a week. Anything more is usually overtraining.

I lift weights 6 days a week. Upper body one day, lower the next. Any harm in that?

I have been on the Hershel Walker (sp?) Training program....for about 3 months now....already have dropped 30 pounds and getting faster and stronger....and i havent touched a weight...

Push ups, pulls ups, sit ups and wind sprints........5 days a week

in the morning i run sprints and do the push ups in between sets of sprints....then i jog this exercise type course around my townhouse....do 1 lap.....pullups....do 1 lap pull ups....do 1 lap pull ups...

then in the evening i do rubber band workouts...curls, squats, rows etc....its worked wonders for me, i love it.

I think you should be fine doing that because you let your upper body rest for a day and then your lower body rest the next day.

If you burn fats as a primary source of fuel or more rapidly than they can be converted in the TCA cycle, that is correct and is why the Atkins diet is not a good idea. Normal beta oxidation in non-starvation situation of fatty acids does not produce ketone bodies in large enough amounts to put your body into ketosis. Ketone in small amounts is a good thing because it is a very mobile fuel source.

On the biochem part, I feel your pain. I am just now starting the second part of my advanced biochemistry II for my Ph.D. in Microbiology, Molecular Biology and Biochemistry. I had General Chemistry I and II, Organic Chemistry I and II and Biochemistry I and II as an undergraduate in addition to physiology, and a graduate level Advanced Biochemistry I class as a grad student so it has taken nearly three full years of chemistry to get me to some relatively low level of understanding of carbon metabolism. Now I am off to 'master' nitrogen metabolism.

It makes my brain ache too :)

That is a mixture of Cardio and Anaerobic, pushups, pull ups and the ruberband workouts are anaerobic.

    Probably not the best plan.

Try doing the weights first, then the cardio and see what kind of results you get.

it depends on the results you want. if you want to keep your muscles somewhat excercised, and your heart and cardiovascular system in shape, then i think what your doing is fine. its certainly enough to be an overall healthy person. 35 minutes of cardio can be done every day. your muscles shouldn't need any recovery from that. very intense sprinting or cycling is a different story, but basic 30-60 minute cardio is fine every day. i would do push-ups and sit-ups after your weight training, and only on days of corresponding muscle groups. if you've been doing what you're doing to lose weight and maintain a certain fitness level, and you're content with the results, then stick to it. despite all the terms and functions of this or that, different routines and philosophies work differently for all people. if you want to be a sick moose, then id definitly switch things up quite a tad. but nothing relates more to how you look than your eating habits.

the way your post sounds, it seems like you should just keep doing what you're doing. if you're thrilled with your results, then why change. dont workout without eating at least once for the day, but at the same token, dont workout on a full stomach. a yogurt and banana should be light and fine, and drink water periodically throughout the workout. if u find that 90 minutes is too long(i know i dont have 90 free minutes in my mornings), then lower your overall time and up your intensity. just dont kill yourself everyday. if you go real intense, then you will need breaks. your muscles should'nt really need too much recovery though from simple cardio.

good stuff. you gotta take care of your body. when u get older, it gets difficult to find interesting ways to stay in shape. when i was a kid, we played sports and games. now, running and bicycling is just painful and boring to me. if you can do it, do it. all i do is lift weights. theres some moderate cardio benefits there, and i adhere to the "its better than nothng" philosophy. i did martial arts, but im too busy for that now. if u keep it interesting, and stay disciplined, you'll keep it up.

That is the most important part of all and probably should have been brought up first thing.

Your diet is far more important than any exercise plan.

Not really man. Here's the thing... it's not as expensive as people make it out to be. For example, for breakfast, just have a half cup of oats mixed with skim milk or water... a banana or apple is a great idea too. Mid morning snack, you wanna go with some decent carbs to get you through the day (carbs aren't bad). I'd suggest maybe fruit, granola bar, or almonds(almonds are fatty, but they include good fats.. I know they're not a huge carb food, but it's a good idea). As for lunch, you'll want to have something as healthy as possible, a lean meat, vegetable, and some good carbs (brown rice is a great example). You'll want another mid afternoon snack, try something like yogurt or some cottage cheese. Then you can have your "supper" of something like chicken breast, brown rice/sweet potato, and a steamed veggie. Pending on what time you go to bed, I wouldn't eat anything 2 hours or so before bed. If you go to bed at like midnight, something that has a good amount of protein (cottage cheese is a great example), but low in carbs is good because you want to decrease the amount carbs during the night because you're going to sleep soon. Also... and I'm sure enforcer and Mindwarp will vouch for me on this, eliminate your soda, etc with WATER. Usually when you're hungry, you're actually thirsty... People would lose so much weight and obesity wouldn't be such a problem in America if we swapped our diets from soda to water... There's so much to say and I said a lot of information in one paragraph.

And for the people who want to know what kind of cardio to do. It's the best to either do 10-30 minutes of low intensity cardio (50-60% effort) or 10-15 minutes of HIIT (interval training aka sprints). Notice how long distance runners tend to have the "skinny fat" body type but sprinters are usually ripped? That's why... long distance running wears away your joints so I really don't think the 5-10 mile runs are necessary. Try doing the low intensity cardio for 10-30 minutes or the HIIT for 10-15 minutes. Consider doing weight lifting as well because the more muscle you have on you, the better your metabolism is. Look at the big bodybuilders, the amount of muscle they have is astounding and I'm sure they burn two-three times the amount of calories than the normal man does simply sitting around because of the amount of muscle they have. Like Motion said, always do cardio AFTER weight lifting too. That's like a rule IMO because when lifting weights, you need amino acids to build muscle. When doing cardio, those amino acids exit your body.

Oh and I know that mathematics say that if you burn more calories than you eat, you'll lose weight. Although that is true, please don't think if you fill your stomach full of complete crap then it's going to have the same effect. I know most of you aren't this serious and it doesn't bother me, I just figured I'd share what I know. Good to see most of you are into bodybuilding or at least exercise alone. I'm starting my first "cut" on Monday and I'm hoping it'll go well.

If you have any questions, I'd be happy to answer, not a guru by any means, just someone who looks into this stuff in my spare time. I don't know about most people's knowledge, but I do know Motion is a knowledgeable guy about this stuff so take his advice too, I learned a bit from him in the past.

Depends on how much you use. A tablespoon per day on whole wheat toast in the morning? Nah. I'd suggest getting natural Peanut Butter because it contains essential "good" fats such as Omega-3's and sometimes flax seed. Don't over do it and you'll be fine.

try going on a diet for 6 days, then giving yourself a cheat day where you can take a day off. A lot of guys do it, diet for 6 days then a cheat day where they treat themselves by not being so strict. Then start all over again with it.. It'll be something you'll look forward to and make life easier. Don't go down whoofing 20 double cheeseburgers or anything, but you can go to Subway or Arby's or something. Keep working at it bro, you'll get to where you want to get!
