I recently reformatted the computer a week ago and installed trial version of Norton Antivirus. That's all I have at the moment, no antimalware, no extra firewall.

In the past 24 hours, I've been getting a notice from Norton saying that it blocked an attack from Trojan.Vundo. Strangely, this notice occurs every hour on the dot, exactly when Norton automatically updates its virus definitions. If I disable the wirless connection, it does not happen.

I have done both Quick and Full virus scans after these notices, and besides the occasional tracking cookie, have come up clean.

So might this be a peculiarity of Norton? Besides being annoying and strange, it makes me wonder if there's something wrong that Norton cannot identify.

Norton stinks. Find a replacement, there are plenty of solid free ones on the net.

(sorry that this is not an actual answer, more of a suggestion)

you guys weren't kidding about Norton. I installed Avast, and did a full scan at boot. It identified two trogans, one in the temp folder, other in the Norton root folder.

    I uninstalled Norton after that

    linux ftw.

or alternatively "start - run - msconfig - enter - startup" or "(windows key)+R" "msconfig - enter - startup"

know what you're turning off and you might fix it.

You should use this tool to completely uninstall Norton otherwise it will stay in the registry and cause you more problems.

leave it to anal gap to give a too complex answer. the simplest of solutions is sometimes the best, use avast :)

anyways, norton sucks its like AOL, it completely takes over your computer and becomes a memory hog. Plus it takes too much space. And apparently, it wasnt even doing the job.

I would also recommend adding CCleaner and AdAware to your utilities.

It's only complex if you haven't done it before.

Excellent suggestion mate. Malwarebytes is definitely the strongest malware killer out there.

I use Autoruns to control what runs at startup.

    It's easier and more powerful.

see you're still in windows mode.

if you have linux you don't need all that reboot shutdown ****....

I have a number of programs I need for work that I hear do not run in Linux, though I've thought of partitioning the hard drive and installing Linux that way.

I am getting so sick of windows. I don't even do anything that really warrants viruses, just mytheater.com, break.com, or googling scouting profiles for draft prospects.

im running vista on a toshiba laptop. no problems here.

i think it depends moreso on what kind of computer you have and what you do on there. windows does suck, but apple/mac is not always the best either, and linux is good only if you know what youre doing.

also, stop downloading porn, trust me, youll thank me later
