dvd not playable on home system

This is a question for any tech specialists. When I download video to my laptop and burn it to a dvd , it will play on my laptop. However when I try to play it on my home system it does not.

I use vuze to download and then nero express to burn to a dvd. I would like to be able to burn to a dvd that will play on my home systems(s) big screens and in the bedroom for convenience and just to enjoy on a bigger screen.

Do I need to convert it somehow? Or is the format just not compatible? Any help would be greatly appreciated , thanks in advance.

What format are the videos that you are downloading? Probably avi but just want to make sure.

If you use Nero Express, it should be able to. Unless you made a data DVD. Express gives you the option to make a video DVD.

If your home system can read divx, sure.

    No problem.

Hmm, that could be a codec issue rather than video dvd issue.

One or more files could not be added to a compilation.

The following files may not reside in the VIDEO_TS directory of a DVD-Video compilation. Only compliant DVD-Video files
    VIDEO_TS.IFO,
    VIDEO_TS.VOB,
    VIDEO_TS.BUP,
    VTS_nn_0.IFO,
    VTS_nn_0.VOB,
    VTS_nn_0.BUP and
    VTS_nn_m.VOB
can be added to the VIDEO_TS folder. Please add files from a completed DVD-Video title or use an authoring software like Nero Vision to create DVD-Video files from standard video files such as *.avi and *.mpg.

The file does not match the current file filter.

This is the message I get when trying to make a dvd in nero in the videos/pictures DVD-video files tab.

It encoded in the video cd tab but could not burn to a dvd .

I can burn on a variety of programs , to a dvd , that will play on the laptop but none have played on any of the three dvr's dvd players for household use.

Ah ok, yes, you need Nero Vision, which will convert and then write the DVD for you. If you don't have it, any free software that converts avi's/mpgs to .vob will do.

I always use DVD Flick to encode avi's. It's free and it works great mate. Pull the avi in and set the output folder.

    It's free.

Many thanks , I downloaded it and the dvd does play in my systems. It took a long time to complete so I will see if I can improve on that , but it works so that is a big plus.

Really , many thanks for all the answers , genuinely appreciated.

Glad it worked for you mate......

I failed to mention if you want to add chapters in DVD Flick you have to go to edit titles on the right side then chapters and change the time frame for chapters. I set mine for ten minutes.

It does take some time depending on your machine. I have a quad core processor with 2 gig of RAM so it encodes right quickly. When I used to run XP with a P4 I would encode overnight or while way.

    stopped burning

The DVD flick program worked very well , for a few discs.

I burned 5 or 6 discs and they all worked very well , the last ones I included the menu option you had mentioned that went smoothly too.

The time was about 1 1/2 - 2 hrs. to complete , so that was certainly more than acceptable.

The last few times I tried to burn a disc it did not work . The tray did not eject when done , but the information said it was finished.

I don't think any information went on to the disc. I poked around a bit and I think I read something along the lines of " e drive not ready". This was also in the image burn notes ( now I won't pretend that it makes much sense to me , but included this as it may be pretty obvious to someone with specific knowledge ).

I am now retrying to burn the disc , it has been doing so for over 4 hrs , and says it has completed all the categories ( prepare files , encode video , encode audio , combine sources , add subtitles , author DVD ) and currently shows finalizing burning to disc .

Not sure if it is a computer issue , a DVD flick issue or maybe some setting for my e drive / dvd burner ?

Once again , thanks for the great answers , the quickness of the replies , hopefully someone can provide help again .

    Cheers
