    Report: Bank rethinking Mets deal

Citigroup Inc is exploring the possibility of backing out of a nearly $400 million marketing deal with the New York Mets amid concerns about how lenders are using government bailout money, the Wall Street Journal reported, citing people familiar with the matter.

Officials at Citigroup have made no final decision about whether to try to void the 20-year agreement, which includes naming the Mets' new baseball stadium after the bank, sources told the Journal.

The Mets deal has been attacked as an example of misplaced spending by financial institutions that needed bailout funds. A Citigroup spokesman in New York told Reuters on Monday that "no TARP [Troubled Asset Relief Program] capital will be used for Citi Field or for marketing purposes."

U.S. Reps. Dennis Kucinich (D-Ohio) and Ted Poe (R-Texas) wrote to Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner last week, asking him to push Citigroup to dissolve the Mets deal, the Journal reported.

No link or anything but just heard on MLB radio on XM that Omar Minaya and the Wilpons are in a meeting right now discussing an offer of 3 years 69.5 million to Manny. Just a meeting, but wouldn't that be interesting....

Mets' brass: No big names on tap

NEW YORK – The Mets ticked off item after item on their checklist, completing it with the official signing of Oliver Perez on Tuesday afternoon. The bullpen was fixed and the starting rotation was completed. But they made it clear that the shopping list will not include any more big-ticket items.

And that means Manny Ramirez is not coming to the Mets.

"I can say that’s correct," Mets chief operating officer Jeff Wilpon said.

That’s all, folks. This is your team. Whatever cliché it takes to convince the Mets’ fans that still stage rallies, flood e-mail boxes and airwaves and badger Wilpon and Mets general manager Omar Minaya, the Mets are out of the chase for the slugging outfielder.

"There’s not going to be any more big moves after this," Minaya said. "I think we’re done after this. We’re going to go to spring training with this team. We’re going to look around for those smaller pieces, but as far as big moves, our priorities have been met.

Don't be surprised if they don't make 1 or 2 more moves, nothing major, but I still see them putting out an offer to a corner outfielder still out there, and I for one am hoping they make that to abreu. As bad as he is fielding near the wall, I would love his 100rbi's in the 2 hole. He would be the perfect bat in the 2 spot, knocking in reyes or at least getting on base a lot for wright and beltran. Send him a 2 year 16 mil offer and he will definitely take it.

Pissed the brass aren't looking at our future and taking the hit with crapstillo. Orlando hudson would be the perfect second basemen for us, and he has been very outspoken about his desire to play here. Unfortunately we are going to have to deal with automatic outs in the 7-8-9 spots with schneider, him and any pitcher not named Johan.

As Ive said all year Abreu would be a nice consolation prize and still allow Murphy to focus on 2B...and you know we will need a 2B because Castillo is always good for at least one injury per year. Alex Cora and Argenis Reyes are not answers if you want to be a good team.

Im not sure Hudson is an answer either. While he has great leadership qualities his bat is starting to decline and given that his offense is at least partially based on his ability to run I cant see that turning out much different then Castillo on a long term deal.

Its not just those 3 positions at 2b, LF and C that we dont know what we will get offensively; its also 1B. Raise your hand if you think Delgado is going for 38 and 114 again. *crickets*

Manny or at the very least abreu is a real answer to help the offense. Abreu sees more pitches per AB then anyone so I think his value would multiply right behind Reyes.

    Some news:

Mets thinking of tinkering with maine's repertoire:
    http://newyork.mets.mlb.com/news/ar...t_id=3794434&vkey=news_nym&fext=.jsp&c_id=nym

Its an interesting read on how this staff compares to previous staffs and how the different looks could make them all more effective.

Abreu reaching out to Mets for 1 year deal. This should be a no brainer if Manny is really out of the picture. 1 year for him or multi-year deal for Dunn? Hmm...ok I'm convinced, Abreu it is. http://www.metsblog.com/2009/02/06/hitter-no-hudson-abreu-contacts-mets/

In his latest Rumblings & Grumblings column for ESPN.com, Jayson Stark says the Mets and Yankees have not pursued free-agent 2B Orlando Hudson this off season, despite Hudson’s comments on the MLB Network last week.

Instead, Stark believes Hudson may be looking at signing a one-year contract with the Nationals or Dodgers.

…i believe, once the Mets realized Luis Castillo could not be traded, and then committed to giving him the opportunity to succeed in spring training, it all but sealed hudson’s fate…

    Speaking of one-year deals…

…from what i can gather, having talked with people connected to the player, Bobby Abreu has been reaching out to the Mets, as he is willing to accept a one-year deal to stay in New York and switch back to the National League…

…however, i have not heard his name mentioned by people connected to the team, which is not surprising, considering he’s yet another left-handed hitter, he’s not strong enough on defense to handle right in Citi Field, and he may still looking for $10 million per season…

Ex Met Mike Defilice will manage the Kingsport Mets of the Rookie League.

Prospect Fernando Martinez is out 3 weeks after hurting himself in the WBC but this is what one scout had to say about him in a recent Jayson Stark column:

One scout says the best-looking young player he saw in the Dominican Republic this winter was much-ballyhooed Mets prospect Fernando Martinez.

"He looks to me like he can be a young Bobby Abreu," the scout said. "His discipline at the plate is good. He worked counts. He hung in against left-handers. He did a lot of good things. He may be 20 years old, but he doesn't look like it, the way he handles himself. He really plays under control."
    http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/column...umblings090206

Now personally I wont be upset if he ends up being Abreu-like but I think his ceiling is higher. And that's no slap at Abreu as I'm aware at just how good he is.

    Feliciano, Mets settle on contract
Left-handed reliever to earn $1,612,500 in 2009 campaign

    mlb.com

    just a note.......

also please tell me that the abreu thing is true, he would be the perfect #2 hitter as I have preached. And like boik said, have murphy working out at second so that when crapstillo gets hurt we have an immediate plug-in, that is not named cora....

Abreu wore out his welcome in Philly, especially with his defense in right field. Phillies' fans will always call him Mr. Clean Uniform because he never tried to get his dirty or make much of an effort on defense. I would take Moises Alou before I would bring back Bobby.

So you would rather have a guy that gets 20 abats a season and does not wear a uniform the rest of the year because he is on the DL instead of a guy that will bat 300, hit 20ish HR's, drive in 100 runs and walk 90 times?

    Okay :shifty:

The Phillies aren't looking for a full-time outfielder as they have Ibanez, Victorino, Werth and Jenkins. But Moises has the same average year in and year out as Bobby at half the salary. It all depends if Moises can pass a physical which is questionable.....we also are looking at Nomar for fill in duties. I just don't think Bobby is worth $16 million especially for the kind of defense he plays. I don't see Bobby giving you guys a hometown discount.
    :tongue2:

At this points thats a bad joke taking Alou over Abreu. I saw Alou more times in the Verizon store last year helping fix his wireless card then he saw of the field at shea.

If you could ever guarantee me a healthy season of Alou I might be more inclined to agree but Alou and healthy have just never gone together. Hes missed literally 1/3rd of his career to injury.

Abreu has stated he wants to stay in NY and return to the NL. Plus try selling a house in this market...

further Abreu has some pretty good numbers to offer a team:
7 of the last 8 years hes driven in 100 runs
8 of the last 10 hes scored 100
Hes consistently between 290 and 310 with a great OBP usually around 370-400
He lead the league in pitches seen last year, and typically ranks among the leaders. That'd be an amazing hitter to have behind Reyes.

Plus he plays LF, a position of need, and could be more willing to accept a short term deal because hes 36 and not many teams have much money to spend anyway at this point. Unless he reconsiders the west coast, his options are very limited. I still want Manny more but I wouldnt say no to abreu.
