My question is simply; "What are some good History websites?"

Since history is my current full time occupation and eventual profession I am constantly in need of some good resources. Naturally, for the kind of work I have to do things have to be academically based but some of the best information I have ever found have come from ideas posted on various websites about the particular topic I was interested in at the time. Obviously I had to track down the academic sources but nevertheless a good website can be indispensable.

Essentially, what I am looking for are websites that are devoted to history and maybe have book reviews and things like that. If anyone has any favorites please pass them along. I'm looking at guys like you Marty. :wink2:

The only one that I really use now is The History News Network hosted by George Mason Univeristy:

Also I'm glad this new forum exists. Thanks "powers that be"

Being that the United States of America, is essentially a huge corporation with our history based on economics, I would like to offer this site.

    http://www.thefreemanonline.org/

Search the archives on any topic. You will find how it relates to us economically. The site is mostly contributed to by professors of various schools around the nation.

You will find over fifty years of archived history here.

I will definitely bookmark those but what I am really looking for are sites about colonial history say from the 17th - early 19th century, especially anything about the founding fathers (religiously even more specifically).

George Mason is someone who, I feel, not nearly enough is written about. Here is a book written in the 1800's with the intro by Fitz Lee that might interest you. You can read it while on this site.

you need to be very careful using on-line sources for history. i would avoid wikipedia altogether...and never use it as a source for any paper you are writing. your profs will laugh at you.

for quality history resources online, you need to rethink your search tactics. there is no one end all for all history. you need to break your search down for individual historical events. and search for actual historical documents uploaded on-line too.

I know all of that.

I like using the internet for ideas. If I were to bring in anything with wikipedia or any internet sources for that matter I would be laughed at and humiliated in other equally embarrassing ways.

All of my sources for writing comes from books (done by "scholars" of course), microfilms, and other "scholarly" approved means. What I wanted to ask here was what are some people's favorite websites that are good to read for fun and get ideas, sorry if that was unclear. I agree that usually the sites are by era, area, etc. but there are some some like the HNN that are general and so I was putting out feelers for others.

For instance I am working on a religious biography of George Washington now and what I have been doing is searching the web for quotes people are using to prove that he was a Christian, Deist, or what have you. Once I get these quotes I write down where they said they got them and check them out. Surprisingly I have been able to track down most and the ideas I have gotten from this has been amazing. However I never find a website and site it as a source rather like I said I am using them for ideas and links to possible actual "scholarly" information. I'm using this all as part of my research process and you have to look for ideas anywhere you can get them.

I accessed the archives through their regular site http://www.thefreemanonline.org/ and clicked on archives and typed George Washington + religion.

I was surprised when I noticed it linked through Google. But what do I know about how computers do what they do?
