I originally posted this in Club and figured I would share my thoughts with everyone in this great site.

Thoughts and responses are greatly appreciated.

Looking back at all of the players who have either been added or expunged from our roster ever since the the New Sheriff in town has taken over I have found it rather exhilarating trying to figure out who will be cut loose like dead bait and who will be the new guy brought in like a shiny new Firetruck under the Christmas tree.

Look at last year for example, Zach and JT, many of us at first thought no way the 2 team leaders are not apart of the team. Whoops, out you go.

The trades we made? There is not a person on this planet that could have guessed we would trade a day 2 pick for not only Fasano but also Ayodele. Jason Ferguson, well, some of us had a notion.

Leading up to the draft? O.k. how many of us switched between Chris Long, Jake Long and Matt Ryan? In the end, Big Jake was the safer bet and was signed lock stock and barrel to take some of the luster off of the opening of the draft.

But really, how many guys figured we would end up with not only Big Jake, but Merling and Henne as well? Talk about luck falling into your lap. Dont even get me started on Donald Thomas. :shifty:

Now as we delve into FA for the 2nd year some names get thrown around (Bart Scott, Bartell, McFadden) yet 2 out of 3 are off the board. Hell, even some of our own guys were shown the door by the media and fans alike yet lo and behold Channing Crowder and Vernon Carey are still here.

Gibril Wilson, hardly a peep about him as a possible signing even after he was released from the Raiders. Any guesses on who we actually do sign before training camp starts up. Go ahead and guess, because I have no idea.

The draft? Just look at how many players everyone is throwing around. Alex Mack, Max Unger, Larry English, Hakeem Nicks, Sean Smith, Connor Barwin and on and on and on.

I guess what I am getting at here guys is for the most part our new fearless leaders keep us, the fans, guessing on a day to day basis on what happens next and after seeing the results from the 1st year I for one am on board swabbing decks if they asked.

Enjoy the ride guys and gals, draft day is almost here. :knucks:

The way the front office goes about signing players and trades kind of reminds me of the way the Patriots have managed over the past decade or so - they never seem to go for the big names but get a lot of guys just under the radar that seem to produce for them.

It does make a change from the old days when we seemed to know a week or more in advance when someone was going to sign!

Exactly, I always hated when everyone and their mother knew exactly who we wanted or what we were going to do. The veil of secrecy is huge in the NFL especially during the draft and free agency.

Can't believe you left out Lanford, since he was a starter also out of that draft.. Merling was hanging on to Holiday, but Lanford outright took over the other DE position.. I'm impressed with the team from last year, and look forward to this year's team... I don't expect them to rep the record, but I do expect them to be more competitive...and if they manage to get that same record, then I know we're close to SB caliber..

Not to intentionally leave out Langford, just wanted to try and keep it as short and simple as possible. Too many gems to mention from last year and of you throw everyone in the post turns into a novel.

But yes, Langford was my favorite pick from last year.

The only thing I'd say is that the title of Smoke & Mirrors, sort of implies a scam.

Nice post Joey. It is quite fun and unpredictable but fun nonetheless.

ps. you also left out bess. Who had the best value for the how he was aqcuired in my opinion. But i do understand there was a lot to think about and you wanted to keep it simple. Carpenter was solid too.
