Well i just went into my station to pick some stuff up, and prep for tomrrows show.....and my NEW program director was there. he pretty much let me know that they will be letting producers go that they feel are making too much money and will be replacing them with free interns. because of the economy and everything. so i said "whats this mean man? i gotta 1 year old at home....this economy is tough for everyone" and he said "im sorry theres nothing i can do" i knew this was going to ****ing happen. my old program director and i were tight. he moves on to san diego to run a station there, and i knew this new guy was gunna come in a **** on my parade. so i wake up tomrrow, with no job. WTF man! im a strong individual. and i will make it through this, my wife has a great job at a plastic surgery office (shes a medical asst) and i have been working part time for suntrust bank as a financial representative. maybe they have an opening? the branch i work at the most is short on FSR's (financial service represenatives) so maybe i can get full time at the bank? all i know is.....this is the biggest bad thing that could happen to me right now, but sadly i knew it was comin, ask sam and a few others i have been talking to. i knew this new program director would be the end of me. Radio is a **** buisness, enless you are the host making 6 figures jobs are a revolving door. They will always find someone cheaper and fresher than you. They told me i could stick it out for a week until its final, i told him thats bull****.....and i wont be going in this week, see how well my show is ran without me....and see how my host likes it (me and him are close) maybe if he *****es enough they can make room for me? i doubt it though. but heres the good news....next saturday or friday on my show, i am going to be dead ****ing serious, use good quality, talk about the dolphins and sports...take a few calls and edit, cut the **** outve it and email them to all the program directors around charlotte, maybe i can getta drive time slot on the air for some rock station or something? im done producing. its a tough job, thats not recognized, and is ****ty pay. i wanna host. i can host, im funny outgoing witty, and can have a damn good radio show if given the chance. so there is the big news for my show saturday....its a ****ing audition! **** this sucks man.....i hope suntrust comes through with a fulltime job! ill need the coin. SIGH
its ****ing crazy, i was just tellin you last night how this buisness is mean. haha.....this sucks man. one of us need to win the lottery to get our show off the ground
Dude I'm VERY sorry to hear that. The world is a ****ty place to live right now.... also...hope i'm not over stepping here....since you have another job I guess you won't get unemployment? If you are eligible I'd HIGHLY suggest you go in for this last week. If you don't the case could be made that you "quit" (as you weren't officially let go) and you could lose out on your unemployment benefits. That happened to a buddy of mine. He was unable to swallow his pride and it ended up costing him dearly. There may be some legal recourse for something like that as well but I'm unaware of it.
Sucks to hear man, but this could be a blessing in disguise. Maybe doing your own show will help you get noticed or open a new door or two. Perhaps you can get a Boomer or Confucious on there one night and talk some serious draft strategy. Maybe debate some prospects that we all disagree on or something of that nature. Either way Im sure you will turn this into a positive bro and GL.
I'm so sorry to hear this. It seems to be the nature of that business..... I bet this turns out to be a good thing because with your talent, you'll get something better I'm sure. Then you can look back and laugh at the bastard that let you go when you're more successful. I enjoyed the craziness last night , lots of laughs. (Gish cracked me up and PMZQ was a hoot) I was trying to log on and got confused so I put my nickname in the wrong place so I appeared as "Vette"
cant burn bridges in this industry.....jobs change so much never know if he becomes my boss again somewhere.....
Brother Chris, I am very sorry to hear this. daphins is right. Work your last week no matter how painful, so you leave on good terms. See if you can get a letter of recommendation. Stay positive, network, and something good will come out of this. Keep the faith. Just to fill you in what is going on out here. San Diego 6 the local station out here on tv, let go of there whole sports dept. even there director and will no longer be covering sports unless it is a big happening. The am sports stations out here have whacked a lot of personalities as well. I wish nothing but the best. Get working on updating that resume as well. Think of accomplishments you have done where you are, and make sure to capture them in your resume. Use this week to your advantage. I know what you are feeling now bro.
Make sure you get names, emails, and phone numbers before you go. This will come in handy when you make up a reference list for getting your next gig.
Chris, take a few minutes and make a to do list for yourself of information you need to get, and things you need to get accomplished. You may have to put a little time of your own in or extra time, but it will be very well worth it.
Holy crap dude.......that is sooooooooooo ****ed up. What can I say, other than you need to make your show serious and get some stuff canned and sent out to PD's around NC and maybe northern SC. I am sure you can count on all of us to help you. No more playing around. As far as Sun Bank is concerned my mom worked there for 25 ½ years and she knows some people (she used to be the bank President's boss when he started out there). Maybe I can ask her to see if she can call a few and find out if someone might be able to help you out.
thanks john. i needed some straight talk ahah. I will finish this week out. and i have already started networking and emailing other program directors throughout the area.
Ecspecially if he can get Boom on there with his Herald ties that opens the doors to a whole new network of Phins fans, the more listeners he gets the better it has to be. The only reason i wasnt there last night was because Im on vacation and using someone elses computer occasionally. I will be a weekly listener we need to get the word out everywhere.
this crap is happening all over. i was gonna wit till 65 to retire but i saw this coming and retired at 62. got tired of fighting the system. most employers don't give a crap about their employees, just want to make a buck. i can understand that but some employees give everything they have to service the company. hang in there dude, the economy might be turning.
Someone else posted it but no matter how pissed at them you are for canning you you gotta go in for the week dude. Get the $ while you can especially since you've got a kid at home. I went in and worked the day I was let go of my last job (hell why not call it "being fired") and though initially pissed about that for a long time I'm glad I worked that day...
Hope you can find another station job or have that FSR job pull through bro. I had a friend who went through something similar. New management that hated him, got fired, but ended up in a better place anyways. I'm sure you'll follow suit.
Never fun to hear people losing their jobs. The radio industry in general is so damn fickle. Almost to the point of ridiculous. There is no job security. Sick, you may be on to something doing a structured show. Maybe even two shows in a row? Hitting all kinds of topics, editing the best parts together and putting the audtion tape out there. I suppose the good thing for you, since the industry is downsizing financially, it is bound to affect on air talent, meaning that they will be looking for cheaper replacements (i.e. you) to come in and fill time. I don't know too much abut th ebusiness, but your best bet might be an overnight slot. That is usually where they tend to try people out.
You're due for something good to happen bro. ****ty times bring out the worst of us, but there is definitely light at the end for you and your family.
sorry to hear the bad news bro...but I know you'll find something else soon, you're very talented at what you do. I know something good will come your way.
Sorry to hear that Sick but try to look at it in a positive light in any way possible such as it helped you bolster your resume, you probably made good connections, and it was also a job that you probably enjoyed (so it was an overall good experience and even losing a job that you loved is better than working a job you hate - trust me). I know the happy go lucky optimistic side isn't what you want to hear but it will help ease the bad feelings you have. You have the ability to do quite well in this field in my personal opinion and I try to catch your shows as much as possible (just keep on plugging away Sick).
sorry to hear about this. I survived 2 different cut backs at my job. i held my breathe the whole time. i don't know what i would do if i was in your situation. I'm the only one working in my household and i'm paying for a new house, a wife, and 2 kids, and a couple of loans. I know you'll make it through this. When one door closes, another opens!
Sick I'm sorry to hear this its very ****ed up what they did. They use that excuse to cut employers they get a free pass those *******s. Be strong man I know you will get a better job soon good luck man.
Sorry to hear that dude. I hope, no, I KNOW it will all work out for you. If you need anything or if there's anything I can do, please let me know.
Damn bro that is totally messed up. Samething happened over here to both me and my wife (going on 3 months now without employment) so I know how it is. Look at the bright spots, one of you is still with a full-time job and you still have a part time deal at the bank. Let me know if you need any help making that demo of yours with people calling in and whatnot as I'll call in and ask about the draft or whatever you want.
I'm sorry brother. Make those tapes and get them out, you never know what can come of it. Show biz is a funny business; many is the story in which someone gets a call off a tape he'd forgotten he'd made but someone else saw/heard and liked.
Very sorry to hear, bro. I know radio is a tough business, I'm going into something very similar. You ever thought about putting together a web portfolio to show off your work? I know a lot of students (particularly seniors) here do that, it's something that you could consider. With the world relying more and more on the internet, it may be wise to consider doing that. It seems that in today's world, people are more inclined to click a link than wait for a DVD or CD through the mail and doing so that way.
Dude, that sucks more than anything. Just be glad that you and your family have your health. You will find something very quickly. I'm sure it will seem like an eternity, but it'll be over before you have time to think about it. I'll be there to support your show this weekend. Good luck bro. We're all pulling for you and your family.
