just when I thought it was over for this year. As if Brady wasn't hard enough to defend, we now make it even harder for D's to sack him. Brady Rule

And I think this guy sumed it up very well on how I feel about the matter.

This game is quickly losing it's personality

So does this make cut blocks incredibly useful now? Whats the standard, if you are on the ground you need to stand up completely to resume the play?

Yeah, this, combined with the "no wedge" and "defenseless receiver" modfications made yesterday seem to be specifically designed to benefit the Cheats.

Jared Allen did the same thing to Matt Schuab and Gosder Cherlius did the same thing to Jared Allen.

its a good rule because on both occasions they got hurt.

how many times has a pefectly good game of football been ruined by penalties? i cant count them all. every year they find new ways to penalize defenders and make 2-3 new rules. Last year the defenses caught a break and the force out rule was removed. But all of that is undone when you make 2 new rules dictating how you are allowed to hit someone. Cant touch the head of a receiver, and cant fall on a quaterback. i understand the defenseless wr rule. Boldin took a hit that should not have happened. they should have aimed for his chest, but how can they know where his chest is going to be once he jumps for the ball? either way, sandwich pressing a WR in the face is uncalled for and should be avoided if possible. the brady rule is dumb though. 300+ lbs of momentum cant alter its path unless it has something to push off of. how is a lineman supposed to stop himself in midair? this just means more flags, and less football. boo!!!

What an absurd notion, so what if they manage to rise to one knee, is that still a "lunge"?

Does one knee equal a lunge or does it require being prone?

What ticks me off about this is that, once again the NFL caters to the Patriots.
Why wasn't this done when Carson Palmer went down?
No they wait until it happens to ******** Brady and the Patriots.
I really try to stay neutral and to look at things fairly. But this does tick me off.
When it happens to Tom Brady all of a sudden its an issue that needs to be addressed? Come on, now.

I think alot of you are zeroing in on that one instance but like I pointed out it happened at least 2 more times and injured both players. This is a good rule like it or not.

I'm sorry, I can't agree, players start football knowing there are certain risks. That aside, when will this stop? Whats next, saying that blindsiding a QB is outlawed? Why not just put flags on them and be done with it.

I don't have a problem with it. Again, I think it's intended to increase player safety, which I'm all for. Call it the Brady rule, or whatever you want. But, I've seen it happen many times. It's basic physics. 300+ pound defender is on the ground, QB is in the pocket with both feet planted, defender lunges, knee is the first thing to give out.

Remember Dolphins fans...this rule protects our QB too! Not just Tom Brady.

On a side note...gish that is one sweet sig. I see I'm not the only one hoping Miami takes Nicks if he's sitting there at #25. Let's hope your sig becomes reality.

Those type of hits occur every single year.
You may think that its just a coincidence that the rule change came about after Brady was leveled. But I don't believe in coincidences.
Good rule or not I think its kind of odd that it comes on the heels of Brady's injury.
Why not after Palmer's injury? Why not after Culpepper's?

Well Brady is a football Icon but I understand your feelings on it.

On Palmer and CPep's injury I don't remember how they occurred. The injury with Culpepper happened out of bounds and was a shoulder to the knees.

    Palmer's injury is fuzzy.

The fact is these kind of tackles or moves should never happened they could end careers. I believe it should be outlawed all together instead of giving QB's special treatment.

That's what I guess I don't get, any tackle on any play can be a career ender. To me, this is like a Soldier saying "I can't go to combat, I might get killed"

No not really the hits where players dive at the knees are almost career enders. By dive I mean the hits that Pollard and Allen put on Brady and Schuab.

Got you, but I still believe that in the football way of life, any hit can take you out. Granted some have a higher risk factor, but come on, when is it going to end?

Every year a new rule comes out to take away target points for a would be tackler. Some are good (helmet to helmet) some are just plain dumb - like the latest one that is made to protect the NFL's golden boy. Like I said in another post: defenders work hard to get to the QB. They have to battle these linemen and force their way through a wall to get to the guy. They sometimes (a lot actually) get tripped up and taken to the ground on their way into the backfield - sometime blatantly tackled (held - but no call). Why the hell can't they grab a QB's legs from the ground? That's just stupid. The NFL is asking these men who weigh between 280- 330 lbs to get their asses up and THEN make the sack? Ummm...please. By that time, all the work they just put in to get through was all for naught. The QB will have gotten rid of the ball at this point, or an offensive lineman can simply reset, wait for the D-linemen to start to stand, then shove his *** down again. You think the defensive linemen are going to want to bust their asses all game for that? This is BS. I hope Brady takes it to the other knee. Maybe a D-lineman will knock Brady's center into him a take out his other golden leg. To hell with the NFL. This IS the Brady rule. Why don't they just invite all the QBs to the league meetings and let them decide what the rules should be concerning them. Maybe next year there will be a 5 count rush. I can see it now: 1 one thousand, 2 one thousand, 3 one thousand...

I could say the same about tackling. Is it time for two hand touch football? This was clearly done to ensure that nothing bad happens to Roger Goodell's beloved Patriots again. If that had happened to Chad Pennington or any other QB week one we wouldn't be having this discussion. When men are running at each other full speed sometimes things bend the wrong way and people get hurt. You can't eliminate that without eliminating tackling. But the league is going to do everything it can to make sure that nothing ever happens to posterboy Tom Brady again.

**** the Patriots. This is garbage, Kraft goes running to the commish to protect his quarterback because of a legal hit on him? Total BS. The league NEVER would have done a thing if this had happened to a Chad Pennington but since its glamor boy Brady they invent a needless rule to protect him? Kraft has way too much power in the league, his mark on the league will be garbage rules to protect his players and a cheating scandal. Hope he remembers to include both in his bought and paid for Hall of Fame induction which Im sure is forthcoming. **** you Kraft.

This rule alone should be flagged for a non-football rule! This is nonsense! So if i'm understanding this rule correctly, if a defensive player gets knocked, blocked into or is airborn and can't wrap up the qb below the knee. So he will have to wait to land on the ground and swipe at his feet in hope of tripping him up? Tell me I have this all wrong!

He can still wrap up, just cannot lunge into a QBs knees, seems to me leading with a shoulder or helmet. This one is a tossup for me. Its easy for a QB in a vulnerable state to take a shot like Brady did that can really mess your knee up.
On the other hand, it does seem particularly limiting to a defensive player.

so we have the this, the tuck rule...

any other brady-inspired rules the nfl has made since his first year?

Heres a nice quote from Kraft:

"I think all the quarterbacks in this league are critical to what the game is about," said Patriots owner Robert Kraft. "It's like if Peyton Manning were gone for a season, I think the whole NFL suffers, the same way the NFL suffered with Tommy out. So whatever we can do to protect quarterbacks and to minimize the opportunity of them being taken out with a year-ending injury I would support. "It's not good for the league. What makes it special is special players. It's like going to see a great movie and the star isn't in the movie. It's the same principle."

I still think defensive players are going to "lunge" at QB's legs and knees....if you are a defensive player chasing a QB and you get knocked off balance, you are still going to try and grab the QB. It is hard for these guys to stop as they are making the tackle and say, "Oh there is a Tom Brady Rule so I am just going to avoid hitting him in the knees." You might as well just take the penalty and nail the QB. As long as there is not a big fine and you get a shot at a QB, you are going to take it.
