I know we've got a lot of Dog lovers and the like here. I just came across this in the Palm Beach Post, and wanted to share. In general I find this breed to be nothing but a joy. They're very loveable, yet fierce competitors and vicious defenders of their home and the people inside. They have great personalities, my two guys are completely different, each neurotic in his own way, and a blast when they are together. Most times when you someone with a Dachshund, they have two of them, not because one isn't enough of a dog, but because the first one was such a great experience and so much fun that you want to double it up. I'd have 20 of them if I could, and hopefully, one day I can have a home with a yard big enough to accommodate more. In any case, most of these pics are of older dogs, which generally make great companions. You don't have to worry about them chewing, or housebreaking and the like. http://www.palmbeachpost.com/accent/content/accent/slideshows/2009/04/0402shelter_pets/ Special care is needed for the breed, especially regarding their backs. Picking them up and holding them requires two hands to be safe, keeping the spine as straight as possible, and I recommend dog steps if they are going to be allowed on the furniture.
Oh they can be bad, don't doubt that, especially for the first 10-20 years of their lives, but they're highly intelligent, and, if trained, make great friends. My boys think they own the neighborhood, and everything from lizards and ducks to small children and the elderly run in fear when they are out on their walk. My wife left town last night to visit her daughter in Texas for two weeks. They usually go to sleep at about 10:00 pm when my wife goes to bed. I usually stay up a while longer to game or watch a movie. Not last night, they can't read a clock (I hope) but at 10:15 they got off the couch and went for their walk. When that was over they ran upstairs to go to bed. I let them in the room and they went to sleep. Almost. 10 minutes passed and I looked up and saw them staring at me from the landing, as soon as we made eye contact they started barking at me and harassing me to go upstairs, they didn't want to sleep alone. I put them back in the bed, and went back down, but they did it again and I gave up and went to bed.
That's what people say when they meet them on the street. Then the barking begins, followed by the running and screaming. I took this one at the beginning of the week.
That's what they are bred for. They can be be vicious, if needed, and they love to burrow, I play a game with them where I hide a pig's ear or other treat under a blanket and they go hunting for it.
my neighbor has like 4 of them real good looking dogs. I like them when they don't mess with my dogs.
What have you got? My former Doxies (the ex-wife has them ) used to torment my neighbor's Rottweiler, it got to the point where when he'd go for a walk the dog would poke his head out of the front door and look at my house, to make sure they weren't out. These guys go to the dog park and spend a lot of time at the fence that separates the big dogs from the little ones, talking crap.
Ive got mutts. Ones part australian cattle dog / and whatever the other is part choclate lab/ whatever. Both are pretty scrappy dogs though so it would be a good fight probably. Plus my dogs are stoooooooooopid. I saw them both try to take on two pits one time.
15 days muchaco! They'd probably fare better against two pits than four Doxies. One fighting technique of the Doxie is to roll on it's back to it can attack the stomach and genitalia of a larger dog. Ouch. You'll appreciate the name of the brown one: Chorizo. Aw geez, let the rumors begin.
Thats actually what the lab tried to do to one of the pits was roll over and attack its throat and it did it fast. Was crazy.
Bro, you don't miss a beat.....only been here about...ohhhhh 2-1/2 months Have to let me know if you ever venture this way......The Irony? I was probably 200 miles closer to El Paso when I was in Tucson
How do you like it there? My wife wants to *sigh* move there due to her daughter and grand daughter living there. I'm trying to convince her to drop that idea and stay in South Florida, it's been working so far, but I'm afraid this trip will renew her enthusiasm.
I noticed awhile ago I just kept forgetting to pm and ask you...... Yeah man I'll be going there alot now I think since my dad moved there. For sure we'll get some beers.............
I can't speak for all of Texas (Pretty big State), but the area North of Dallas is really really nice. I miss my mountains, but it is actually really beautiful here, and it is almost surreal-stereotypical how genuinely nice people are. There are definitely worse places to live than North Texas....and now that "One" bad cop has been run out of town too...
Back on topic; We have a Weiner-Chili dog...I kid you not. 1/2 doxy, half chihuahua...100% ankle biter.
My neighbor has one, Toby is his name. Good little dog! Max was a full blood Blue Heeler Pudy was a mix of Blue Heeler and ??? Spook is also a mix of Blue Heeler and ??? I got Spook from the Boulder Humane Society, he was transfered in from Utah. He was about 4 months when he came to Colorado. I named him Spook because he has this evil look to him.
They are the greatest dogs ever. I had one with my ex-his name is Sam, he is a dapple, and is the best dog I ever had. She got to keep him when we split (she has an 11 year old son who is his best buddy so I didn't argue), but when I get settled into my new house in Orlando (yay!), I am getting one, maybe two. A friend of mine does Pekinese rescue, and is hooking me up with a doxie rescue couple. Yours look like they could kick up some trouble, Op. Bet they're a lot of fun.
They went swimming at my Aunt's house on Sunday. Let's just say they're not built for that. They were good sports about it, but I'd be afraid to have them if I had a pool they could access without supervision.
Thanks Jimmy. You're such a "pet"manitarian. I wish I had a place big enough for, like 20, of Bean. She's the best companion ever while my family's away during the day.
What excellent timing for a thread Opie , as just yesterday, Mom and I decided that it was time to get a new dog. We will never forget Jasper, but its now time to get a new little fella to love and take care of.
Seeing the recent losses, like you Kev and Steve from Colorado, just made me think about the 'unwanted' pets out there, and if there's one breed I know, it's these little buggers.
I just think when we take on the responsibility of owning a pet, many of us take it too lightly and the ones who end up suffering are the pets. Down in my neck of the woods (beach) we have a growing problem with Iguanas that people thought would be cool pets, until they get big and somewhat difficult to handle, then they just simply let them go into the wild. Now they're a nuisance that destroys plants and competes with indigenous creatures for food and habitat.
That's just irresponsible pet ownership IMO. Pets are almost as big a responsibility as children and you need to make a commitment to adopt because you want them to be a part of your family and a companion, not just because they're cute. Bean has rewarded me in spades because I take proper care of her.
i had a pet dauchshung when i was 5, we sold it because it was evil. the people we sold it to went on vacation and it suffocated in a sleeping bag while they were gone. i have no idea why they came back and told us what happened.
Congrats Kev! I know you miss Jasper - you probably always will - but a new "friend" will help you heal more quickly.
It's a commitment of a good decade or two. A lot of people don't think about that, and if you're buying a parrot or Macaw the bird may be crying at your burial one day. Bean seems like she's in great hands, even if she's verboten to be on the internet anymore. That's a real shame. My dogs sleep undercover all the time, no problems at all. The bag must have been pretty tight.
Yeah - I don't know why Chris said don't post anymore pics of her. I was showing him them one day and he just said "do me a favor and don't post anymore pics of her." Yeah - Bean goes outside once a day to take care of her business. Then she comes back in takes up residence on the couch. And, boy, can she snore! Sorry about your dog Gish.
Mary never have truer words been spoken. I never looked at Jasper as a "pet" he was Jasper, a member of the family just like mom or my brother. A lot of people just do look at them as "the dog" Its going to be difficult for me too, because of the restrictions I have due to my panic disorder. I am going to find a way and soon enough I'll be a proud new papa !
Man I wish once a day. My guys have a special diet due to Chorizo's diabetes and it makes them poop at least four times a day. Thank God it's good solid stuff, I live in a development where poop-nazis are watching, and never leave the house without the infamous Dog-I-Pot bags.
What a strange story bro.....why would someone make an effort to just come back and say something like that ? Weird Here is a doggie I have just seen at a local shelter website that I may want to look into adopting, that is, if he'll have us His name is Chester, and he is 4 years old and was adopted previously by a shelter worker who has since passed on.
He's adorable Kev. I'm sure he'll have you. Bean's 4 too and just getting over a left eye infection. What a trooper though - took her drops like a man, err, I mean lady. But you truly realize how dedicated you are when you take out your wallet to pay the vet.
True again Mary ! I am hoping he'll have us......I just showed his pictures to Mom and she just about fell in love with him. I will spend the rest of this afternoon trying to find a way to get him adopted by us.
Looks like a great dog, good luck if you two become family. Tell me about it. Diagnosing Chorizo cost about $500, his insulin runs about $70 for approx 3 months and the needles are about 16 cents a piece. Put that with his special food at $25 a bag (10 lb) and he's an expensive little bugger.
