What would you guys rather have a great Defense and a okay offense or a ok defense and a great Offense. It has been proven that you can have one of thoughs and stil win a superbowl. For example them 2000 Raven a great Defense and an ok offense. The 2007 Colts are an example of a ok defense and a great offense. So which one would you rather have?
Great D, Defense wins championships. We have had the great O and average D in the past and it got us nowhere.
Yea that is how I feel I think Defense wins championships. The 2000 Ravens offense did not score for the first 7 weeks in the season. Look at the first loss. Thanks. No I've been a member since the site was set up when FinHeaven went down. But you're right, I haven't posted much.
I want a terrifying D like the Ravens had a few years ago. They crushed people 9-3. Maybe a little more offense though.
But, we've also had a great defense and IT got us nowhere! At the time we had an adequate offense, just not a good one. One and done is just as bad as not winning enough to get in the play-offs to me!
IMO using the Colts' 06-07 defense as an example might not be fair. Although the Colts' defense was ranked something like 23rd throughout the season, they inexplicably caught fire once the playoffs started. See below. So it still could be said that the age old adage of "defense wins championships" still applied. Our defenses of a few seasons back still contributed to some of our losses. I can remember quite a few games when I would watch our defense hold up and keep us in the game; only to surrender a big play towards the end. You give up the big plays and you lose the game. So give me a top 5 defense. But give me an efficient offense. The offense doesn't have to be made in the likeness of the Colts. All I ask is that it holds onto the ball (no turnovers, win the time of possession battle) and when opportunity knocks put the ball in the endzone. For years our offense hasn't taken advantage of red zone opportunities. How many times have we watched the Fins drive within the opp 20 and stall out or turn it over? I dont really care as long as we ultimately win more games with whichever option we choose. Though, an intimidating defense is a fun thing to watch.
A cheeseburger would be nice, however i would like to see a very dominant defense combined with an effcient offense.
I like mine with lettuce and tomato, Heinz 57, and french fried potato, big kosher pickle and cool draft beer well good god almighty which way do I steer?
I agree on the great D. Our great O never did have a running game. If we would have got the running game going it might have been a different story.
On defense there are less variables. Offenses depends highly on variables such as weather and field conditions, field position, time left in the game, timing, sun in the eyes, sweaty hands, the other defense, etc, etc... This makes a great defense much more consistent than a great offense. I'll take the D and hope to catch some offensive breaks rather than the great O and praying for some offensive breaks.
If New England had won the superbowl I would say great offense. But the Giants did with a dominating defense, so I guess the old adage holds up. But I will say, it's becoming impossible to win in the NFL with an bad offense. Just look at the Ravens. So as long as the offense is good, I would say great defense.
It is very true that you have to have a very good defense to win the Super Bowl but it is rare that you can win without at least a top 10 offense also. For several years we've had a pretty darn good defense. Until it emploded in 2007, always in the top 10 and several times in the top 5 but the Offense left alot to be desired. Points wise we've only been above 18/19 points per in 2005 if I remember correctly because of Scott L. I sure would like to see Parland at least do more than just give lip service to the O-line this year. That is why I would love to see Jake Long with the first pick. Will be happy with C. Long but we need to use at least two of these first three picks on the o-line, in my opinion.
Totally agree. On defense, being really good at basic fundamentals can make up for a lot. You don't have to be flashy on defense...just dig yer hands in the dirt and hit somebody.
The statistics for the last 20 years seem to indicate the answer is “you’d better have both.” The average defensive scoring rank of the champ in that period is 5.15; the average offensive scoring rank is 5.8. Likewise, the average defensive yardage rank of the champ in that period is 6.9; the average offensive yardage rank is 8.3. A closer look seems to indicate a dominant defense is a bit more preferable. On five occasions in the period studied (or 25% of the time), the Super Bowl champion did not have a top 10 scoring offense. On only two occasions (10%) did the champ have a scoring defense not in the top 10. (Interestingly, it was the last two years: the 2007 Giants scoring defense was ranked 17th, and the 2006 Colts scoring D was 23rd.) Similarly, on seven occasions the Super Bowl champion did not have a top 10 yardage offense. On only three occasions did the champ have a scoring defense not in the top 10. Again, though, balance is key. 14 out of the last 20 years have seen the champ have both a top 10 scoring offense and defense (70% of the time). In yardage, the top 10 standing in both offense and defense has occurred 11 out of 20 times (55%). I have the full chart of rankings if anyone’s interested.
only thing- we had a great defense in the 90's and look what we got............ oh, you said ok offense- not 0 offense I'll take the great D then please
I think a good defense is one that creates opporutnities for your average offense. That is I think it is about the number of chances an offense gets to score that matters....of course, the adverse is that an opportunistic defense cuts the amount of times the opposing offense has
That's a good point. Scoring and yardage defense is important, but a defense with a high number of takeaways is bound to improve a team's overall fortunes.
Well, we look to be building one hell of a Special Teams Unit, and I think that it can pay big dividends for the offensive and defensive units this year. I look for that to be the biggest difference in last year and this year. The offense and defense will show some improvement but I still really expect them to struggle some, and we are looking to Special Teams to swing a few of those 3 point losses into wins this year.
I just want to win.................even if it involves BP lacing up and TS blocking for us..... file:///C:/Documents%20and%20Settings/Compaq_Owner/My%20Documents/My%20Pictures/24e3434.bmp
Well said, Doc. One of the best examples was the 99 Rams. They get a lot of credit (and rightly so) for the "Greatest Show on Turf", yet that defense was actually the 4th ranked D in the NFL, if I recall. For the short term, a great defense is the better goal, because a great defense is easier to build than a great offense, and you can go from a bad team to a good team a lot faster by taking that route. And indeed, I believe that's what Parcells and Co. intend to do.
