Team's will struggle to defend the next phase of the Wildcat

Pat White is going to be the centerpiece of the next phase of the Wildcat in Miami.

    [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X0YPDFmcp5Y"]YouTube - Pat White Highlights[/ame]

The Dolphins Front Office made the comment that they wouldn't be drafting anyone specifically for the Wildcat offense this year, but you can now officially label that comment as "smokescreen" because with the 44th overall selection of the draft, the Miami Dolphins made a firm committment to not only running the Wildcat again this year, but to also move into the next phase of the scheme by drafting all world Wildcat specialist QB / WR Pat White. It's obvious by the high selection that the Dolphins were not going to take any chances of someone else reaching up and grabbing their future Wildcat star because they clearly have some very big plans for Pat White in Miami. They also have big plans for the Wildcat.

The selection doesn't mean an end to the future of the Chad's (Pennington and Henne) in Miami. The Dolphins will continue to run a base offense led by one of the Chad's, and in most games that base will be most of what you will see, but the Wildcat, which appeared in most games for a series or two, is clearly going to expand in the future. Pat White will be a very big part of that process.

For those not familiar with Pat White's accomplishments, be sure to look over the Highlight video linked in this article. You will recognize some of his plays from college belonging to our very own Wildcat Offense. The key to White's college success is based on great angles, great decisions, and an unbelieveable tempo once the ball is snapped. His NCAA record of over 4,000 yards rushing for a QB and "big play" passing game have groomed him perfectly for what is ahead of him in Miami. Sometimes a players success of failure can have alot to do with timing, and timing in Miami with it's emphasis on the new Wildcat is perfect for Pat White. His impact could be huge Dolfans.

Pat White isn't a proud guy. He'll be fine with whatever role the Dolphins offer him, be that as the Wildcat QB or in the slot at WR when the Chad's are at QB. When asked what he thought about breaking the NCAA QB rushing record he simply said, “When I’m done, I’ll sit down and think about it, reflect on it,” White said. “Right now I’m just thinking about the next two games.”

White will make everyone around him better. It may be hard to believe, but teams will no longer key Ronnie Brown in the Wildcat. The top dog in this next phase of the scheme will be Pat White. Ronnie Brown will be the 2nd or third option, much like Ricky Williams was last year while White becomes the leader of the Wildcat most the time. White may line up at times as a WR in the new Wildcat, but unlike Pennington he'll now be a threat on the pass, end around, or reverse. The scheme is about to make life for the defense a major problem.

    THE NEXT PHASE:
The Dolphins surprised some people with the Wildcat last year, but ultimately the teams that had success shutting down the Wildcat went to a 9 in the box scheme that dared the Dolphins to pass the ball. Yes, we saw Ronnie Brown throw a TD to Fasano in it's debut vs the Patriots, but on Browns other few pass attempts, his throws were off and even looked dangerous to attempt. I started to get the vibe that we should be throwing out of the Wildcat more than we were based on what I saw defense's doing to defend us in Wildcat, but as time went on I thought we were'nt passing with Ronnie because we couldn't, not because it was just being neglected in the playcalling. On one play in particular, I remember Ronnie missing a simple throw for an easy touchdown or huge gain on a simple seam pass. The throw was horribly off mark and at that point I started thinking - Better we not pass at all rather than let them see more of that, because at least if we keep running it they will have to wonder if we can pass or not. Any more of that type of pass action and we'll see 11 in the box instead of 9.

Pat White will change all that. Pat White will direct the Wildcat the way it is supposed to be ran Dolfans. We'll be able to throw well enough now that we won't even see 9 in the box anymore. The Wildcat with Pat White at the helm will see 7-8 in the box, and we'll see some very big pickups on the ground and in the air. Teams defending us will now have to choose their poison. Stop the run or stop the pass, but either way your are going to be in trouble. Last season the ONLY answer that defense's had to the Wildcat was 9 in the box pressure. That's it. With the new playmaker in Miami, NFL defenses are going to be scramling to find a new scheme that works vs the Pat White led Wildcat. We will see some huge holes, huge seams to run through and wide open field in front of the ball carrier.

It's a totally different animal than the Ronnie Brown led Wildcat. White will be able to rush for 100 and pass for a 100 in the same game. Teams will be faced with a run pass option now and not just the inside / outside option that we had last year. Now on any play we can run inside, / run outside / or pass the ball long or short. So many variables on what we can do with the ball that it is going to hurt all those defensive rules that the Pro's try to live by in terms of defending and reading a play. That's why the Patriots and others looked so out of position when we had Wildcat success last year. It's going to appear to be a much bigger field this year, and teams will have a week to prepare for a system that is completely different than anything they have seen on their schedule. Sure other teams will try to run their version of the Wildcat, but watch the timing - tempo of the other teams running it. Much slower, worse angles, not the real deal. Sparano and David Lee have strong backgrounds in running the Spread offense, which evolved into the Wildcat. These guys know what they are doing and have the PERFECT players to run it. Now with Pat White leading the Wildcat, we have an experienced playmaker sparking this exciting scheme. Our fakes will be lightning fast and our reverse will be deadly. End arounds (A sweep from the extreme outside usually to a WR) will also be dangerous and compliment what we do. The big difference though Dolfans will be the passing game of Pat White.

Again, watch that highlight of him running his college version of the Wildcat. You will have no doubts or questions about what he is about to do in Miami. Early on, look for Miami to create some high scores in our games vs the Falcons, Colts, and Chargers as teams try to figure out our new phase of the Wildcat. If Pat White isn't NFL Player of the Week at least once in September I'll be surprised. I'll even take things a step further - If Miami isn't in the top 5scoring offenses in September, despite our schedule difficulty, I'll be surprised.

The old answer to dending us is no longer the answer Dolfans.

White ran for 4,325 yards and 47 touchdowns and passed for 5,576 yards and 52 touchdowns with the Mountaineers.
    That means:
    99 Touchdowns
    9,901 Total Yards
    Career QB Rating: 147.37.
This is calculated differently for NFL and NCAA
If one calculates his QB rating with the NFL formula it is 99.83

Whats not to like about that...with the upgrade on our offensive line and White this sure is going to be a exciting football season "like no other" great report,LOOKING FORWARD TO AN INCREDIBLY EXCITING SEASON

On a side note the offensive lines in the video were blocking 30-40 yards down field and never stopping...the also blew me away with there speed and athleticism

Pat White is the missing link to the Wildcat offense...

WR, RB, QB...he can do them all. But as soon as teams start rolling 9 or 10 into the box, that is when Pat White makes them pay with a money pass.

Mayock loves the kid and I think he is the best talent scout out there within the networks. I think Pat White will be stiff comp for Henne in a season for the starting gig. What a great problem to have...

Henne has all the tools to be a very good QB. We could be the next team to have 2 very good QB's. But first both have to prove they can play the position. I have faith in them both.

...also great post, really enjoyed the spotlight on Pat White. I am so excited about his running ability in the Wildcat, that alone will open up the pass from the Wildcat. I hope they pass on the first Wildcat of the season. They need to make plays early in the game with the Wildcat pass. That would setup the Wildcat run for the LONG GAINS...or even LONG TD RUNS!!!

    LOVE THE DRAFT!!!

I didn't like the pick at first, not because of the player but because we took him so high. The more I read up on him and watch him the more it seems he will be a great player and I can't wait to watch him either.

I wonder if the front office is worried about Henne's development/potential?

Those that disagree with the Pat White are either looking at it from the stand point of using a 2nd rounder with no true position or have not seen him play college ball for the last 4 years.

Pat White is a QB for the Dolphins... end of story..... He will run the new phase of the Wildcat and it will account for more of our offense than last season....

Why did we take him in the second round when many expected him to go in the 3rd? Because if we don't take him at #44 then the Pats WOULD have taken him before #56.....

The Pats picked Edelman later in the draft and he ran the same style of Offense in College. This further solidifies for me that they would have taken Pat White if we fiddle farted around and tried to let him slide and also the Pats are nervous about preparing for the Wildcat... hence the Edelman pick to help them prepare before they play us......

BTW... for everyone who is upset about the Corners and Wide Receivers we took instead of using a pick or two on pass rushing OLB, ILB or backup NT..........

You only have to look at the positional strengths of next years draft to understand a major reason behind it........ Next years draft is much deeper overall and deep at OLB, DT, NT, and QB....... I consider the CB class to be decent, but does not have the big and physical CBs we prefer which we took this draft..........

Parcells and Ireland know they can not just look at this year, they have to keep looking ahead as well....

It sure is hard to imagine how teams will defend the wildcat with White.

I also don't believe that the Patriots would have taken White. I mean how would they have used him other than moving him to wide receiver? If I were them I would never take the ball out of Brady's hands.

    Pretty encouraging highlight reel. Thanks.
I still have some questions/concerns that you could probably answer for me.
My impression of our wildcat was that in order for it to succeed we needed the element of surprise. We lined up in our base then shifted pre-snap so as to catch the defense off guard. What I'm reading into your post is that we won't need that element of surprise. Is that what you're saying? Or not?
If we still need the element of surprise then White will have to be on the field at least some of the time when we run plays out of our base offense. If this is the case, will (and if so how much) we be limiting our options when he is lined up at those times and we don't use the wildcat option?
Another thing I noticed is White seems to not have great arm strength. His short to mid passes look real nice, but those longer passes not so much. In your opinion how does his arm compare to Pennington's? Will his longer passes be a problem for us against NFL defenses?
One thing I'll say now coach is the guy looks fast and has great shiftiness.
No doubt he's an exciting player to watch.

I think that the surprise this year will be run vs pass from the Wildcat...not necessarily the Wildcat itself, as it was last year. This year, we can come out in the Wildcat, with Pat White back there, and teams can't just stack 9 in the box, like they did last year. If they put 8 or 9 in the box, then White throws the bomb on them. If they don't stack, White can hand it off to Ronnie, or he could *gasp* run the option. I think that teams wouldn't be so surprised by seeing the Wildcat this year, but the surprise factor comes from not knowing how to defend the Wildcat with White taking the snap.

I'm certainly excited about the possibilities but I'm disappointed that we are committing ourselves to becoming a gimmick offense. I believe smash-mouth football teams become dynasties. Perhaps that it still the aim with Pat White as the game-breaking wildcard but it seems the pick is one an already championship calibur team makes.

Pat White was a definite target for the Pats for his play making skills, open field running, passing and ability to return kicks.....

The Pats coaching staff would have come up with all kinds of plays to use his skills.... Flea flickers, reverses, outlet passes, end a rounds......

There is no way no how would I have wanted White on that team with the difficulties we have containing their pass happy attack as it is.....

With Pat running the Wildcat now I can honestly say I see some of the Offensive momentum swinging back in our direction...

I'm not crazy about picking White where he was picked. I would have waited one more round to see if he lasted but I do like Pat White the player.

I know everyone keeps saying Wr, Wr, Wr but I think they will line him up at Rb along side Ronnie Brown as well. I actually think he would make a pretty good Rb but forget that for a minute. Lining him up with Ronnie sets up a whole new aspect of the Wildcat as well. One play they run base offense and run the ball with either of the Rb's. Right after the handoff Chad heads to the sidelines and his replacement waits, ready to come right in as soon as the play is over. By doing this they have two extra playmakers instantly added to the wildcat. Plus our opponents will have to worry about making replacements to this as well...

White will make an excellent option leading the wildcat because he can flat out run and has GREAT Vision to make big plays running. This will cause havok with the Safties as soon as he runs a few then fakes to run and passes out of it.

Pat White has the ability to contribute GREATLY as a Running Back alone. The Wildcat is added bonus to me. I don't want them running it 20 times a game either and I doubt they will so we should see plenty of smashmouth football. If the lineman can stay healthy they are set up to be a pretty solid unit that is perfect for the smash in the mouth runs...

nothing gimmicky about making their blocks at the point of attack.. nothing gimmicky at all about this set. More than half the time we ran right at them.. nothing gimmicky about that either.. your definition of gimmick must be different than mine.

Sometimes something that some consider a gimmick at first later on becomes a staple. Who knows how much this Wildcat will be a part of the NFL 10 years from now. Will we be known for it as the 9ers are often associated with the West Coast Offense?

Surprise is not a factor in the success of the Wildcat. It's all about excecution and tempo. The Defense can't use all the normal traditional defensive reads when facing the Wildcat. It breaks all the rules. Remember, most the time a QB is not considered in the running game, but in the Wildcat he's the featured runner. That alone creates problems. Add the misdirection and veer aspects and a passing game and it's a nightmare.

How about this for a Wildcat play.

QB Pat White takes the shotgun snap, fakes or gives a dive to Ronnie Brown behind Jake Long then gives or fakes the sweep to Ted Ginn Jr, then runs a QB keep or fake opposite side of Ginn. Now imagine that at 1,000 miles per hour and you have the NEW Wildcat.

The defense on that one simple play had to defend all three parts of the field (left hash to sideline, Middle of the hashes, right hash to sideline) with blazing open field runners Ginn and White while Ronnie pounds the middle.

Now go back and watch the video. The dive back could be Ronnie or Ricky, the sweep back Cobbs, Ginn, or Ronnie, and White doing his thing at QB. Don't think White can be the sweep guy too though, I'm sure thats coming as well.

People are unsure about the Pat White pick but to me he seems to be out of the same mold as Michael Vick without the character issues. His arm may not be as strong as Vick but he looks to be more accurate by far. I could see him being a better QB than a lot of people think he can be. He is a really good athlete and is a smart player and has excelled at every level he has played at.

It's a pretty safe bet that the Wildcat scheme is going to get bigger, not smaller in the NFL. I see it lasting about as long as the "Run and Shoot" did.

there are a million things that can be done out of the Single Wing or Wildcat formation:
one of which is unbalance the line to the right, making it the weak side & the left the strong side
that can be done easily & would throw another wrinkle into the opposing defense's preparation
the system is primarily a strong running system but must use the pass to keep the defense honest (Ravens)with a genuine QB in the Backfield who can run or throw, the system acquires an entirely new dimension.

shift right or left then run or throw:yes:

Coach Sparano openly declared (in an interview open to the general press):
they would search the draft for the right pieces to compliment the WildCat

Here's a thought, provided all goes as planned our team and coaching staff is going to long be remembered for introducing this to the NFL
Much the same way Walsh and his 49ers are remembered for the WC style offense; Tom Landry and the Shotgun and (was it) Marv Levy or was it Jerry Glanville and the run and shoot.

I'm not the best to describe it but....
It's a kind of spread offense 4 WR - 2 are slot, 1 RB, lots of pre - snap motion.

What I think is getting a bit lost in this is that he doesn't necessarily have to take snaps out of the wildcat. Just by putting him in at times in basic packages, whether at WR, QB or even RB, you give the opposition pause to think. And if you have Ginn on the field at the same time, it opens up a lot of things.

If you watched Warren Moon play for the Oilers then you saw the Run and Shoot. Mouse Davis was one of its primary users. University of Houston ran alot of it back in the day too. It evolved into the Spread Offense. The Lions ran it some too.

    I love this thread

The only thing that concerns me is Pat White running up the middle. That was obviously a huge part of the formation last year, but White won't be as good at it as Ronnie was. With Pennington out of the game most likely though, we have one more player to work with, meaning we can still keep Ronnie in the backfield and still have basically the same formation. Ronnie will then be able to take draws. The double-barreled shotgun is what another poster called it in their thread.

But what about when Ronnie isn't lined up behind center, how do we threaten the middle?

Another thing to consider is that Ronnie and White are both lefties, which may help us a little bit with our misdirections. How? I'm not sure, but I feel like it should

Maybe starting from the right hash we could run an option to the left, White pitches to Ronnie and then Ronnie throws it to the TE. Something like that, I'm not creative enough.

NFL NETWORK just had a top 5 prospects discussion and guess who made the list? Dolphins Rookie QB Pat White. All of them - including Mayock, Charles Davis, Lombardi, and Casserly think White was a great selection and think he will compete with Henne at QB. They expect him to contribute immediately in the Wildcat.

Wasn't sure if I should be happy or not. It was so off the radar, I don't recall anyone thinking we would pick a QB, not that early anyway.

I agree with "our coach", that Pat now being involved with the WC will give us way more ways to twist and turn this thing to our advantage. Hey Pat could be under center, Brown can come in motion across as if we were going to hand off to him...then Chad lined up at WR on the other side can come across the back field, after the snap, in the opposite direction that the defense may be shifting to stop Ronnie. He gets a pitch back from White and hits Ginn streaking down that opposite side line. Of course he could hand off to Ronnie or could run himself or hit Ginn going down the sideline.

Whatever we do, they are going to have to carefully work him in, just like with any rookie QB, he has to adjust to the speed at this level. So I suspect we may see him handing the ball off more often then passing to start. But even that would criss cross a defense because HE CAN PASS. Unlike Ronnie!

Going to a very exciting offense to watch.

Now, since we didn't draft an OLB, re-sign JT and lets finally see the havoc they can wreak on opposing QBs when properly used as a tandem in our 3-4 defense.

D-Mike, I have a theory I'd like to run by you.

We intended on taking Harvin and White, once Harvin was gone, we had to take White to make the WC work effectively, but we did not have another WC Qb, that would have been Harvin as the back up Qb, lacking Harvin, we took Hartline to take that backup role.

Would Hartline be suitable to be the 2nd Wc Qb? He played some Qb in HS and he is ultra quick.
