I read many post here and there on dolfins forum and internet and I don't understand why many doubt about roth ability. Imo is guy is a non stop motor, solid tackler and last year he recorded 5 sack (our second est sack player)......so I don't understand. could anybody explain me why doubt him . thanks !
It's not his run support that has many fans on edge about him. If I recall correctly it's the coverage and whatever pass rush he may be asked to do. As of right now he is listed as the unofficial starter opposite Joey Porter so the coaches must know something a lot of fans don't
Ok can't play coverage, but against the run and he's very correct in sack department, so JMO but he's solid OLB in this system......we need therefore a solid ILB with pass rush ability in the future (not ayodele and crowder primary ability) but this is JMO.
Part of that is Roth is still mostly remembered for being a so-so De, the other part is his lack of quickness makes him hard to see as a either a good pass rusher or coverage player.
Well, for myself I don't think he is "slow" as much as he just is not very quick, he's a bit like a Fullback and he doesn't have many pass rushing moves that work.
I dont get where the coverage stuff comes in. He was better than expected in coverage for a 280 something pound last minute conversion. They were comfortable enough that Roth got basically all the coverage responsibility in order to free Porter up
I'm a Roth doubter for sure. He's excellent in run defense, and thoroughly average everywhere else. He's got a "non-stop motor"? Oh please. That's just code for a slow, white guy who tries really hard. I'm sorry, I had to say it.
I think we need to remain objective Roth. He was playing a completely new position last year, in a completely different scheme from anything he had seen. All things considered, I think he held his own pretty well Without his strong run support and ability to take on blockers so well, I don't think Joey has nesrly as many sacks.
Link, please. Even if his 40 numbers are great, it is obvious from watching the game that the guy does not have the speed to get to the QB.
Roth gets disrespected by fans because of his unbalanced abilities. He is superb against the run. He has struggled in the pass rush department though in the NFL. Also he's not your best OLB in coverage. He holds his own in both regards but the ability there is clearly not equal to his talent against the run. You NEED players like this though. Not everyone on your team is a polished pro bowler. He's a TOP situational player IMO. 1st and 2nd downs/possible running situations you can do much worse than Roth. You just need a pass rush/coverage OLB specialist to offset his use in pass packages and 3rd and longs. I think Roth/Wake is going to be a GREAT tandem working together situationally. Not a tandem where one beats out the other altogether. Together they will make a complete player at the OLB spot for us.
non stop motor refers to someone who is horrificly slow and white huh? Wow, never knew that. Some black guys described as having "non stop motors" will be very shocked to learn their a caucasian. Way to bring race into the equation when it wasn't at all needed as well.
God forbid a caucasian said that about a black player...... On topic, Coral, I believe you hit the nail on the head. Roth has been great against the run, and really seals the edge. On third downs, and obvious passing downs, or maybe even 3rd and shorts, we will see Wake (hopefully) to act as the pass rush specialist. Maybe even Taylor. Either way, I think it is safe to assume that we'll see a healthy dose of Roth this year.
Agree with you there, I don't get where the coverage questions come in. He did well last year and I don't recall him losing many battles in pass coverage.
http://insider.espn.go.com/nfldraft/draft05/tracker/player?id=8211 Multiple sites have English rated as running a 4.85. It's also worth mentioning that Roth stated about mid season last year he was playing about 285. The guy was not only a first year linebacker, he spent most of the off season playing as a DE/DT, and wasn't able to lose most of the weight he would have for that positions.
Myself I think it is more perception than reality. In reality Roth was a very solid outside linebacker for Miami. No one has actually proved that he is bad in coverage. His pass rushing isn't the best, still he gets pressures. I do feel more comfortable myself with him coming out on passing downs for more of a speed rusher. Still I think he is pretty good and the type of player the Dolphins can use.
You mean like Aaron Maybin? ....."Has a non-stop motor".... http://www.draftcountdown.com/scoutingreports/de/Aaron-Maybin.php You may be a "Roth doubter", but there was no need to turn this into a race type of thing. As average as Roth was in pass pro, he was certainly an upgrade last year over everyone on the roster not named Joey Porter. And this considering he wasn't even usually on the field on passing downs. Our pass rush specialists were and they apparently weren't able to do the job Roth was able to do.
What's impressive is that Roth suffered a groin injury in 2007 that carried into 2008. He played the entire season with it. Coverage would be one area affected, as your ability to change direction is impacted by that injury. Remember how much 'worse' Crowder looked in Week 17 playing with that bad groin? It's tough. And Roth was carrying about 40 more pounds. But Roth really wasn't 'exposed' out there in coverage like we expected. He did a pretty good job. Roth has since had surgery and should be good to go come August.
Thank you! He wasn't exactly a coverage demon. Still, the guy did fine in coverage. There wasn't a lot of shifty backs that just continually killed the Dolphins out of the back field.
I just don't think that's an accurate definition. 'Non-stop motor' suited Matt Roth coming out of college, and it suits him now. Just a high energy guy that plays to the whistle (and beyond) and keeps coming every play. Kevin Carter described him as a 'tornado' after his rookie year. John Randle is the epitome of a guy with a non-stop motor.
