Padres' projected payroll for 2009 remains $5 million over desired target

To meet the $40 million payroll mandated by club chairman John Moores, the Padres apparently need to trade a high-salaried player either before or during the season. Whether Jake Peavy is that player still could hinge on whether prospective Cubs ownership approves a larger payroll for 2010, when Peavy is due $15 million.
Padres CEO Sandy Alderson, who has said Peavy likely will remain with the club until Opening Day, recently confirmed that San Diego's payroll projects about $5 million above budget.
"Right now, what we have projected is between $44 million and $45 million,” Alderson said Friday. Asked if that number is about $5 million above budget, Alderson said, “Right now, it would be."

PADRES: Moorad could own the club soon

On Wednesday, SI.com's Jon Heyman reported that sources behind the scenes said the deal is all but finished. A local radio station reported Friday that Moorad was looking at San Diego-area schools for his kids to attend.

Last month, Moorad said on a conference call that he hoped to have a deal in place by the end of the first quarter. Some industry sources thought that to be impossible because baseball tends to move at a "glacial pace." However, Moorad, a co-owner of the Diamondbacks since 2004, has made a strong name for himself among baseball's owners. Arizona was $353 million in debt when Moorad and several others took over the club, which is now turning a profit.

This can not happen soon enough.

Moorad reaches deal to buy Padres from Moores

    Bill Center (Contact)
    Tuesday, February 3, 2009

    The Padres have been sold.
A California-based group led by Jeff Moorad has reached an agreement to buy the Padres from John Moores, the club announced this afternoon.
Under the terms of the agreement, the club said the sale is expected to close by Opening Day, with Moorad to assume the role of CEO of the Padres, a job currently held by Sandy Alderson.
Moorad and his group will initially purchase about one-third of the franchise, ultimately acquiring 100 percent ownership over a period of up to five years, subject to approval by Major League Baseball.
“Jeff Moorad will not only bring to the Padres his unique experience, passion for the game, and proven leadership, but an unparalleled commitment to the City of San Diego and its dedicated fans,” Moores said.

Thank goodness, now show Sandy Alderson the door.

Cliff Floyd signed a one-year contract with the Padres on Thursday – and took Matt Bush's spot on the 40-man roster.
Bush was designated for assignment as the Padres agreed to give Floyd $750,000 to serve the Padres as a left-handed pinch-hitter, spare outfielder and designated hitter for interleague games in American League ballparks.
“I doubt Cliff will play a lot of outfield for us,” Padres General Manager Kevin Towers said. “But he gives us a solid left-handed bat and brings some intangibles to the clubhouse that we need down there. He's a great guy with leadership qualities.

Bush in hot water again, Padres cut him loose

Matt Bush's days as a Padre are over.
And they ended in much the same way they began – with a controversial incident that involves the police.
The Padres designated Bush for assignment Thursday, just as El Cajon police were looking for him to investigate allegations he took part in a drunken assault Wednesday involving boys lacrosse players on the Granite Hills High campus.
It marks the third time since the Padres selected him No. 1 overall in the 2004 amateur draft that the former Mission Bay High standout has faced accusations stemming from an altercation.
El Cajon police Lt. Steve Shakowski on Thursday confirmed an investigation involving Bush and allegations of assaultive behavior and public intoxication.

There is a waste of a first round draft pick, just because the Padres didn't want to pay a high signing bonus.

    http://www3.signonsandiego.com/stor...sor-maddux-return-padres-spring/?zIndex=53922

Being smarter than their opponents would be a good idea, since the Padres probably aren't going to be as talented – and Monday the club gained some baseball IQ points when it announced that Greg Maddux will join the team this week as a spring training instructor.
Maddux, known as “the professor,” pitched for the Padres in 2007 and until he was traded to the Dodgers last August. A 355-game winner, four-time Cy Young Award winner and future Hall of Famer, Maddux announced his retirement in December. The Cubs and Braves also were interested in hiring him as a part-time coach, manager Bud Black said.

This is the best news, besides Peavy starting the season with the Padres. I think Peavy will be moved to a contender during the season.

Was just discussing the possibility of Maddux returning to the Dodgers in a coaching role with a friend of mine.

But we'll take Peavy as a consolation prize. :tongue2:

In this situation I'd be much happier with Bruce Bochy at the helm then Bud Black, we will be terribly young this year and Bochy had been there before, not so much with Bud B.

I rather have Bud bro. Bruce could never move runners, or play small ball, plus he usually left his pitchers in way too long. Bud has been dealt a real tough hand, along with Kevin Towers has had the hand cuffs put on him as well.:wink2:

Wow, thought for sure he would decline any trade to AL team....Wonder what the chances are that he declines and uses his no-trade clause to say thanks but no thanks.

Interesting turn of events. Hats off to CHW and their FO (Ken Williams)....will wait to see what they give up, but adding Peavy to the top of that Staff is a short term improvement for sure.

The balls in Peavy's court...he could leave them standing at the alter for sure.

The Padres are waving the white flag...in May...sheesh..

It wouldn't surprise me if Bell the closer was also moved as well, next year he is a Free Agent and SD isn't or cannot pay him.

Man, as much as I'd love to see Peavy leave the NL West, I hope he nixes the trade (and maybe sets up the dark horse scenario where Padres really have to deal with the only team that matches Peavy's non-AL and Cali demands, the Dodgers).

Actually if they get rid of Peavy's long term contract they can pay him. peavy is due between 12 and 15M every year from now and 2012 and has I believe a 22M option in 2013. By freeing up that money they may be able to afford both A-Gone and Bell. :wink2:

Gonzo is I know that. Seems like he's their only offense. Peavy, IMO, should go for a hitter and young pitcher.

Two young pitchers Regan, good young hitters are hard to acquire with a contract the Padres can afford, developing pitchers is better long term.

Gwynn Jr is doing well tonight...so far..

Maybe. But in this league you need Offense to succeed. Pitching can only carry you so far. Granted, you absolutely should develop pitchers but developing or even acquiring hitters give you so much more. Pretty much the reason Dodgers went for Manny. Trust me, I got tired of 1-0, 2-1, 2-0 losses past few years.

Brother I went to Thursday nights game behind home plate. Giles is done. Eckstein may not be hitting the world on fire, but he is doing an awful lot of other things for this team, which I would label priceless.

i am glad Peavy is still here even if it for just a little longer. Some national league team will be getting a awesome pitcher who is a real down to earth person. The Padres need to ensure they get some real good players for the future, and not just for the sake of just trimmimg payroll either.:wink2: There are a lot of fans here looking for the new owner Jeff to make more changes in the organization from Top to bottom.

To be quite honest with all that has been going on in my life I have finally had the time to start watching the Padres again. Going to Thursday night game was good for me. I got to see the Padres scratch there way back into the game, and see Tony Gwynn Jr. play, which was great. I went with my brother in law. If I had the money I would be back down there this weekend with the Cubbies in town.

I think we need another bat in the line up, and we could be competing better. I like the way Hariston, Gwynn, and Gonzalez have been hitting. I wish Macias could of stayed up rather then bringing Floyd off the DL. We will see how long they give Brian Giles to get going. He is doing better but still under .200

    Padres go after Tate.

Tate was recommended by Padres scout Ash Lawson. He hit .525 with 10 home runs for Cartersville High this season The right-handed-hitting center fielder slugged 1.000 with a .788 on-base percentage, drawing 29 walks with just eight strikeouts.
Tate hit 32 home runs in his high-school career and was named an Aflac All-American in 2008.
