Data is a robotic comic relief in many situations trying to wrestle with the duality of human emotion and robotic logic.

Going to have to go with Star Trek Here. it's a easy one too, star wars was too Kidish.

Plus star wars has what 6 movie, and a handful of crappy Cartoon Network short series. and look the the 3 newest movies, entertaining yes. awesome? No. Ever the worst Trek Movie (The Finale Frontier) was still better than 1, 2, or 3

Star Trek has 6 series (Including TAS) and 11 Movies, Spanning over 40 years.

No he's not. I have no idea where you got that from. He may have been comic relief in the first couple of seasons, but his character (along with the other characters in the series) become more deep and complicated than that.

Our opinions differ. Even as they developed his character he still had those impish child like "aw he's so cute for not understanding emotion" moments.

No, but having Data do it was just painful to watch. It was a cheesy make the robot cry attempt. bleh.

naw when you really think about it, its a great way to analyze what makes humans, humans, something star trek has always done in contrasting them with vulcans, and other aliens. some of it was for cheesey comic relief, some of it was serious as well though. data ran alot deeper then r2d2 and c3po.

    data >>>> r2d2 + c3pO

    Don't forget:

The "Evil Twins" of Data, Spock, Kirk etc etc...

What a tired *** series that was...sheesh, at least with Star Wars, one watches the films, then it's over, there is not the endless plot recycling that happens in Star Trek, my goodness how can anyone take it?

Yes, I'll give you that he had some deeper moments by virtue of the story arc involving emotion. That being said I thought he was a cheesy character and added almost no value to the show for my watching. Where I thought C3PO & R2D2 added a substantial amount to Star Wars in both form, function and humor without trying to make them anymore than robots.

Well when you beat the same dead horse for so long with the same basic premise you get some redundancy. Where Star Wars was one long story arc not recycling the same thing over and over and over and over (you get it) again.

    "Jordy, reconfigure the warp core"

    "Scotty reconfigure the transporters"

"Chief, open a quantum singularity inside the wormhole..."

"7 of 9, work on the space time continuim and don't sneeze or your tremendous rack will be exposed*..."

Over and over and over again...I'd rather :jump: then watch anymore of it.

    Made that last one up...

BTW, IMO Babylon 5 was a much much better TV series then pretty much every Star Trek series was, I "liked" Voyager but it was just a rehash space time blah blah blah..

give me Membari v Narns or Shadows v Kosh any day of the week, that was one series that just never got old for me partially because it was on hiatus for so long.

STI: Enterprise stops an old space probe mutated into a badass entity
STII: Khan gets some badass revenge
STIII: Enterprise crew gets Spock resurrected
    STIV: Save the whales
STV: Enterprise deals with crazy Vulcan looking for God
STVI: Intrigue as Klingon hardliner tries to derail peace talks through murder
First Contact: The Borg travel back in time to prevent the warp engine's success
Generations: Enterprise crews meet at a time nexus which can trap you in a fantasy land
Insurrection: Uh-oh ... somebody's messing with an alien race
Nemesis: Romulan Picard clone goes crazy

I didn't say all the movies were good, mind you. But I did that in about three minutes from memory.

C-3P0 is just a Robby the Robot knockoff

    ***

I'm much more of a Star Trek fan, but a big reason for that is I prefer science fiction to fantasy, and Star Wars, despite the fact it involves space travel, has much more of the trappings of fantasy.

Also, Star Wars was developed as an homage to matinee movies of old, and therefore was destined to be more action-oriented than the often-cerebral Star Trek.

In short, the comparison is really apples and oranges. Both have different things to offer their fans.

    Absolutely ridiculous statement.

Data kicked *** when it was called for. C3PO ran and hid while fussing like Dr. Smith on "Lost In Space".

    Data = badass
3PO = that other name for kitty cat.

They're both great franchises, and to me here's the best analogy ever:

Star Wars = The Munsters: More slapstick, more action. Not alot of thinking to do. Just sit back and laugh/watch.

Star Trek = The Addams Family: Still offered laughs, but was more highbrow. Required more thought.

    :D

Damn man you are the king of the phins Trekkers

Ok my man you can have your flesh covered C3PO if that makes you happy. It isn't a matter of fighting or not fighting it's a matter of what they were built for and they were not built the same tasks.

I just want to see a Brent Spiner -v- Anthony Daniels cage match.

You bring up a good point, and it makes the "Who's better?" discussion an easy one. C-3P0 was a protocol droid, which means he was basivally designed to schmooze and translate. Data was a freakin' Starfleet officer.

Data was built that way, there is no achievement in being built that way. It would be like awarding C3PO a prize for translating wookie - that's the way he was programmed.

Data wasn't built to be a Starfleet officer, you ultramaroon ...

He was discovered alone on a planet by Starfleet and had the initiative to go through the Starfleet course of study himself.

Remember the data emotion chip? weepy, mad, hating drinks data?

I knew you would show up one day, the one that would expose my Star Trek ignorance to Data's origin. That being said they are still fundamentally different.

I've never said C3PO was better than Data I just said that Data was Star Trek's equivalent.

You do get points for using ultramaroon.

Star Wars for me, though only espisodes I,II & III (I refuse to call them iv,v,vi because the prequels were sh*t! Completely ruined Star Wars for me, however the books continuing the series 30-40 years after the ROTJ rock!

The only Star Trek series I've liked is the Next Generation, Patrick Stewart was a fantastic captain - just shame they made him French but I suppose cap'n Barry just doesn't have the same ring to it!

PS; I personally hate the LOT(F)R

Data is cooler than C3PO because (but not limited to) he at least somewhat looks human (to go along with his speech/mannerisms) and he can walk around without looking like a ******.

And I voted for Star Wars.

Star Trek had a vision that all the races of the world would one day join together and hate people from other from other worlds instead of each other. Star Wars was a fun roller coaster ride with lots of crazy lights and cool noises. Loved 'em Both, but the edge goes to Trek.

You forget Star Wars also has a lot of religion and philosophy. It might have more action than Star Trek, however I think people are really dismissing intellectual side of Star Wars.*

I went with Star Wars, although without Star Trek I doubt it ever gets made.

Star Trek does seem to be more philosophical, while I always thought Star Wars was more politically based (Empire vs. Republic).

I have a Jewish friend who SWEARS George Lucas modeled the story as Jews (Jedi) vs. Nazis (Sith)
