    So here's the issue,

The background to this question is this, 1) my wife and I are from the northeast and would like to live there or Florida, and 2) finding jobs for my line of work is very very difficult, it takes a lot of time and stress.

I was very fortunate to receive two job offers this July for jobs that start in August.

Job A is at a small place out West in the middle of nowhere. It's not perfect for me, but it is a permanent position. We don't see ourselves there forever. I have verbally committed to this one, but they have been very slow to get me the work contract to make it all official or answer my questions.

Job B is a small place in upstate New York, closer to one of the larger cities, pays better, and in a wonderful area that my wife and I could happily live in forever. Awesome job.
But it is a one year temporary job. They are currently trying to 'steal' me away from Job A by telling me that it should become permanent after the first year, but they can't guarantee that.

    So the question is:
play it safe with the permanent job and ride out the recession?
Or gamble for the perfect job, and risk unemployment after a year?

I am still reasonably young, but no savings and lots of student loan debt. The wife is leaning toward Job B.

I'm more of the "Job A" person, but just from what you are writing, I think you should just go with Job B.

Brother can your wife find work in job B area better then she could with Job A? The reason I ask is that may help with the decision. If she can get a good job there, so just in case after a year you don't have the job you could survive until you found another one. Also something else to think of, a lot of economists are saying we won't be out of this mess until the end of next year, so things could begin to pick back up when your contract is over.

If this was me, and I was young I would take job A, the reason being security, if it was me at my age of 45 I would take job b because my family happiness means the most to me right now.

I wish you the very best in your decision.:wink2:

I would take A only because I look at it this way. I would rather have a job as long as I need them rather than a job that is only good as long as they need me.

Brother you bring up a good point, but here is another I learned for sure the last year, that corporate america cares only about money, not employees or there survival.:wink2:

There is no doubt about that. We as a workforce are a disposable commodity to be used and discarded as needed.

    Live from the Internet.
    Job B.
From what I understand that even though you commited, I feel like you are leaning toward B. One year IMO is enough time to A) collect some money if the job pays better and B) if its closer to bigger cities, you can meet few people in your field and may help you out with the long term job.

She's is a social worker, so she can find decent (but never great) paying work wherever she goes. Literally within hours of moving to a new town she has interviews lined up. It hasn't been any different for her in this recession, she already has people out west asking her if she can start next week.

We're hoping to have kids soon, but haven't begun trying. Job B is closer to friends and family, which would be monumentally important to her.

Part of what I wonder is if Job B is just telling me what I want to hear.

Bro then go for job B. Save some money along the year, and keep good contacts as well should the job only be for a year. Keep your resume up to date, and references, and possible send it out the second half of the year just to protect you and the family in the future. :wink2:

It'd put the decision in the wife's hands :)
