What I didn't fully understand was why our corners were playing a good 7-12 yards off the receivers when they were killing us with short passes all night. I understand the concept. You converge and tackle, forcing the offense to play doctor down the field with precision passes. However if it isnt working you HAVE to go to something else. With no pressure that scheme fails.

    And therein is the problem...

One thing that did concern me moving forward is Jones ran at will against us, playing GT next, that is not good, the DT's simply have to eat the fullback dive and force their option office to run outside only, if we give up yds up the middle we are in for a long day.

Hey Alen (and anyone else who wants to get involved) I want to pick your brain a little on this one. When you look at Jacory Harris do you see any NFL potential? Obviously he would need to bulk up a LOT way too skinny. But I'm more talking intangible things.

He has good poise, pocket presence, doesn't take off to run. He makes athletic plays WITHIN the pocket. Great accuracy down the field and decent arm strength (which could only improve upon adding muscle). What do you guys think?

Well he's only a sophomore but I think he's got potential, certainly more than our past quarterbacks. I think the biggest thing for him other than further developing his game is going to be him staying in one piece. As you note, he's got a small frame so he could very well be fragile when taking hits. If he goes high in an NFL draft, he's likely going behind a bad offensive line so he would take a plethora of hits. In terms of his skill, I think he's got potential for the NFL.

His pocket presence is very good in my opinion. He's so aware of his surrounding and even when he was coming out of the shotgun last night, he saw the blitz coming from the middle and took an extra couple steps back to make sure he had a clean delivery to his target. Then, later, he felt the FSU bookends closing in on him, stepped up and delivered the pass to Benjamin. He knows what he's doing out there. His accuracy is good but his arm strength is a question mark, as you note. We saw him through a couple bombs last night, one of 39 and one of 40 I believe, and they both looked good.

The biggest thing for me was his ability to handle pressure and put his mistakes behind him. He came into Florida State's stadium and was very comfortable. He was doing well and then he threw the interception. At that point, I wondered how he'd come back - the mental aspect of the game. He came back very well IMO. Made throws, stayed calm and won us the game by driving the offense down the field. I don't want to go overboard here but his calmness reminds me a bit of Matt Ryan. Ryan makes throws that are ridiculous but also throws INT's and to him, its like nothing happened. After he wins a big game, its like it was just another day for him. Last night, Harris was calm like that, after we won the game, he just jogged into the locker room.

Overall though, he's still learning and developing his game. I think if he continues to develop the way he has, which IMO is quickly, then he should be a pretty good looking prospect for 2011 or 2012.

I'll probably have more to say later, as I haven't gone through the tape.

Great breakdown as always. It's really hard to say since as you said, he is still just a sophmore starting for the first time.

What impresses me is that he is extremely athletic, yet he plays like a QB. He doesn't run at the first sight of trouble, keeps his eyes up field, and tries to deliver the ball with poise.

Two plays stood out to me last night more than any others. The first was the throwback to the tight end. He rolled across the field away from the play, waiting for the play to develop, set his feet and led the tight end so that he could catch it on the run and pick up some yards after the catch. That was a very nice play.

The other was obviously the throw to Benjamin down at the 3 yard line. That was an NFL throw. Perfectly thrown over the defenders, right over the receivers shoulder and hit him in full stride deep down the field. Not much you can say about that one except wow. To add on he stepped into the rush and took a hit on that throw too.

I also believe that playing in this Whipple offense can only help him. It's an offense that takes brains to run. Making the correct reads, throwing the ball with accuracy, and learning to take what the defense gives you. It's almost like Jacory is a totally different player from last season, you could tell he had control of this offense. I think that is in part due to the team knowing he is the man.

I bring it up because I saw someone post. "I cant wait to see this kid on Sundays" after an article.

Thanks for the kind comment. :)

Agreed on his athleticism. I think that's an important skill in a young quarterbacks career, especially one that is a dual threat like Harris is.

I believe that was a designed play. Epps was expected to chip the pass rusher and then develop into his drag route. It did have a nice touch on it though. The thing that I worry about Harris is that he has good touch but he floats an incredible amount of balls. Whether they are deep or short, he tends to float them like Pennington does sometimes and that gives the defensive backs the opportunity to get back into the play.

    Agreed.

Agreed. Whipple's had success everywhere he's went and helped develop Roethlisberger - I don't know how much one can take that in as some feel Roethlisberger is still sloppy - but he did help a QB win the Super Bowl.

Oh Alen that play was definitely designed, but he executed it to perfection. If he looks to that side of the field it allows the linebacker (or was it the safety?) who picked up the TE to read the play much quicker and possibly make the tackle for only a short gain. He kept his eyes trained on the right side of the field until he knew the play had developed long enough.

That is what impressed me about that specific play.

Okay so here I am watching last years GT game again, and it's making me sick to my stomach. I'm only watching our defense play here, and it's sickening how little disciplin we showed.

Take the first series of the game for instance.

The third play of their offensive series is a screen to the slot receiver. The flanker to that side thows a great block on the inside corner. This play features two defenders against one blocker. It is a play you NEED to make while allowing a minimal game. The outside corner does not read the screen properly and allows himself to be caught on the outside of the field, trapped behind the block unable to make the quick tackle. The slot receiver dashes inside for a gain of about twelve yards when it could easily have been a gain of three to five yards. The corner needs to get around the block in this situation, break down and make the tackle. Poor awareness.

After a clipping penalty on the fourth play of the game it looks like we might make the stop. It's first and twentyfive, yet somehow Georgia Tech converts on an option run. How does the defense allow this? The nickel corner comes down to the line of scrimmage as if he is going to blitz. This leaves him between his receiver and the tight end to that side. The quarterback gives the slightest of fakes to the left and the line bites, crashing towards that side of the play. Now back to the secondary. The nickel corner we just mentioned, gets blocked inside by his receiver. He was doomed from the start, this is an error in scheme against the option, you can't allow your players to get caught in poor position. At this point the back has one player to really beat for the first down, the corner covering the outside receiver. Sadly for us the corner is about fifteen yards down the field being completely man handled like a rag doll. No-one comes close to the back for a good twenty yards and they pick up the first down.

    What happens soon after?

Georgia Tech fakes that same option, and this time the receiver comes around on the reverse. The Miami defense crashes TOWARDS the option this time. The play looks like it will be stopped for a loss until the receiver takes the pitch with a full head of steam towards the left side. The left side defensive end has lost containment and is no-where to be found, allowing a gain on the reverse down to our own nine yard line.

Sure on that drive our defense did tighten up and allow only a field goal, but it really set the tone for the entire game. The Georgia Tech offense is based on trickery, if I could choose an old saying that fits it best the obvious choice is "Looks can be deceiving". It's so hard to depend because you have to NOT trust what you see with your eyes. The entire play looks like it is going left, and suddenly the ball is ten yards down the field to the right. You think its a fake dive because of motion, and the back has already broken through your defense five yards straight up the gut.

The one thing we did that entire game and can't afford to do again, is be overaggressive. Let them run the ball for four yards and a cloud of dust all day. That is fine, it eats up clock and keeps the game low scoring. What you can't do is allow them to pick up large chunks of yardage on the ground due to horrible gap containment and mental mistakes.

What really scares me about next week is that against FSU our ends didn't show good run vs pass recognition on many plays. We have to play SMART football on defense. It doesn't matter if we are more athletic than them if our entire defense is running in the wrong direction next week. In my very humble opinion, winning this game will depend on the play of our defensive ends. We need to be able to bracket the plays inside, not overpursue, and force them to march down the field slowly instead of in large chunks. If we can do that, we can win.

One big factor for our defense will be the offense. I think this year we will be able to control the ball better early on, attack the weakness of the Georgia Tech defense, and have good leadership in the huddle. On the plus side this game is at home, and not just at home but is also our home opener.

So everything I wrote pretty much boils down to this. In the end if I am Randy Shannon I preach two words to the defense all week.

    Gap Control

Thanks Alen but all the credit goes to VO. I just made a post saying "someone make me a Jacory Harris avatar" and he did all the work.

Anyway I'm more nervous for this GT game than I was for FSU. How many times in the last three years have we thought "We are on our way back" just to fall on our faces again? The hard part is that last season we got to #23....but that felt fake to me. This #20 ranking feels real, and I dont want to lose it.

Remember last season we won our first game against some nobody team, and one of our players said that since we beat them, he knew we had enough talent to stay with Florida. That was classic UM overconfidence there

VO is very talented he did a great job on that sigpic.

GT is a totally different challenge, you could see the 'Canes team speed against FSU, but against GT's triple option they have to be disciplined as well as fast and the Dline must play "bigger" than they did against FSU otherwise Dwyer and friends will have running lanes both inside and outside.

The U is not "back" yet, if they get some payback on GT then they will have taken their first step towards being back, they hung almost 500yds on the defense last season that should motivate them for this game.

What pass coverage by Morgan Burnett on that play. He's such a quality player. Today, I was just running through some sites, mock drafts and whatnot, and I came across one that had Burnett as a 4th to 5th rounder. I nearly fell out of my chair.

I was happy to see GT win because handing them a second loss in a row would be tough. GT seems to win on big plays. They don't sustain drives as much as they get a huge play for a TD. Hopefully, the Canes can handle them. They started out handling GT last year and then it just fell apart. If GT's big plays are limited I don't see any reason why :theu: won't be 2-0.

They can run for 4 yards and a cloud of dust against us all day and I will be happy. They can't sustain drives with their running game. There will be poor pitches, turnovers, and so forth if they are forced to drive the field against us.

Also that eats clock. We get the lead and limit their big plays....it's over.

You would be happy about giving up a 1st down on each and every 3rd play?

Not doing it, and not being able to do it are two different thing. They are certainly capable of sustaining drives with their running game.

There will be that only if they are forced to drive the field? I'll believe it when I see it. I'm sorry but the Miami D was not that impressive the other night.

That can be said about pretty much every college game.

Just because you average four yards does not mean you get a first down every three plays. When you can't pass the ball it is a recipe for low scoring by your offense. It doesnt mean you actually get four yards every carry.

Second, I'm saying they can't do it.

Three: The FSU and GT offense are completely different. FSU had three good runs all night. Take those away and they were completely stuffed. That's like saying if you Didn't stop the Vikings (a running team) you can't stop the Colts (a passing team) when it requires two completely different things. Also you have to realize a couple secondary players did not play, DVD was injured five minutes in, a WR played corner the entire game for the first time in his life, and neither of our starting ends were in.

I think our read and react skills are going to be vital against Georgia Tech. If we struggle with that, we're going to not only lose but get embarrassed while we're at it. They're clearly going to be using Allen and Dwyer in more option packages because of their success last night and what we have to do is make sure that we don't all collapse on Dwyer because if we do, we'll be like the Clemson defense in the first half. He was used as a decoy because GT knew that Clemson would focus on him. While we keep our eyes and hands on Dwyer, we've got to show discipline in the gaps/lanes. We saw us get undisciplined against FSU a couple times when their small running back came in and ran a couple times for about twelve yards a carry. There were massive hole openings on those plays because while we showed our lateral speed, we overpursued.

Also, I think we're going to have to do a better job of getting off of blockers, if we want to win this game. Our linebackers could not disengage off of FSU's linemen, specifically Sean Spence. It seems like the off-season program hasn't done much for Spence, as he looks still to be at best 210 dripping wet. What I think we should do is stack the box with eight, play three deep and take our chances with Brandon Harris on Demaryius Thomas. Harris played like a veteran cornerback against FSU and showed his ability to play the ball in the air. Thomas is a rather large wide receiver but Harris showed against FSU that he knew how to play big wideouts.

Alen did you see the article about how the team actually started preparing for this game pretty much right after our loss last year? It said they watched tape all through the offseason, because it motivated them so much. The coaches MADE them watch it repeatedly because it made the players so angry.

When I read it, I felt much better about this game. We may lose, but we will NOT be embarassed again.

I believe that if there is one single, all-important key to stopping GT's option it will be McCarthy's ability to stay unblocked and run down each play as it develops.

I think he'll be the spy and with discipline from the rest of the D and keeping blockers off of him, McCarthy can blow up their Offense.

Spence could do a similar job, but Colin McCarthy would be a better choice.

I just got in from watching Lake Howell High School here in Central Florida. For those who don't know, Lake Howell High has produced players like Brandon Marshall, Kawika Mitchell and Trevor Pryce. Tonight, I watched a guy who may be in the same breath as those one day. His name is Christian Jones, son of Willie Jones. He's 6'4 1/2" , 220 lbs and he's a senior linebacker who is considering Miami, FSU, USC, LSU, Alabama, and Florida as well as a plethora of other schools. Jones is likely to follow in his father and brothers footsteps and go to FSU but he hasn't made a firm decision yet so I'm posting this in here in the case of him going to UM.

On to the game, I ended up taking notes on my cell phone (I know, real nerdy lol) because I was so interested in his game and I tried to catch every play of his. It was really difficult to catch all the plays because of several different angles but I did get some statistics down that I counted. I managed to catch the first seven snaps of his. The first six snaps were on defense and one was on special teams. I, personally, counted six tackles on the first six snaps on defense and then a blocked punt (and recovered) by him on the seventh play. On those first six snaps on defense, he was used at the MLB spot. When I first saw him, my head nearly exploded because of his skillset. His defensive line is poor, they struggle to clog the middle and allow several big plays, as I'll note later. He single-handed took my high school's offense off the field. He showed great pursuit as well as read and react skills. When I say great, I mean off the charts. Outstanding.

Later, about the second quarter, they moved him to play strong side linebacker. My high school put an extra tight end to block on that side and he blew up the play by dipping his shoulder and beating the blocks with a quick first step. Then they used a tight end, the original blocker and a half back in to block. He beat tight end with a quick first step, the half back tried to chip him so he ran through that block and ended up applying pressure on the quarterback. He didn't get a sack but he knocked the quarterback on his ***.

In the third quarter, they moved him to weak side linebacker so he played against my schools most athletic offensive lineman, the left tackle. Not much changed. He blew by the LOT with a quick first step and forced the quarterback out of the pocket on more than one occasion. Since he was disrupting the pocket with pass rushing prowess, my school decided to start running the ball but away from Jones on just about every play. They did so successfully, as they ran the ball some up the gut which led to huge gains due to the lack of talent and overall poor play by the defensive line. Jones couldn't do anything about it because we were double teaming him and at some points, as noted earlier, they triple teamed him. We ended up kicking three field goals and we ran the ball well, all because Christian Jones wasn't manning the MIKE spot. I don't know what the coach was thinking, possibly wanted to apply pressure and felt that his interior defensive line could do the job but that clearly wasn't the case. He paid for it by giving the Rams (my and Keith Rivers former high school) successful drives up the middle.

It was 9-0 in the middle of the third quarter when the Lake Howell coach decided that he needed a spark on offense and he put Christian Jones in at quarterback. Now Jones doesn't have much passing skills but that's not needed much because they run a option offense, exactly like Georgia Tech from what I noticed. Jones took direct snaps, did no pitching, and took it upon himself to try to get his team back in the game. He ended up driving about 60 yards down field and taking a direct snap to the left sideline and scoring, to make it 9-6 but the play was called back because of holding. I left after they punted and it ended up being 24-0 when I was leaving.

I was very impressed with Jones, clearly, as you can see with my post above. He's 6'4 1/2, 220 and runs in the 4.6 - 4.7 range. He played strong safety last year and played it very well. Now he was moved to the MIKE spot as well as the outside linebacker spots and he did well there. He impressed as a tailback but I don't see that in his future. I see it at linebacker, any of the three spots, and I think he'll do well. Further, as I stated earlier, I took notes in my phone and some of the stuff I wrote above was included in those notes. The rest of my notes read the following:

"25 snaps seen, 7 tackles, blocked punt and recovery, fluid hips, great pursuit, always around the ball, lined up at all LB spots, collapsed pocket consistently, came close to blocking a FG which he missed by so little, and a quick first step."

Note that out of the twenty-five snaps, he was around the ball on roughly 20-23 of those snaps. I just didn't credit him with the tackle because it wasn't solo. The seven ones recorded are all solos. One could say he assisted on about 12 other snaps, so total, about 19 tackles in 25 snaps.

Last, there is very little bad things to say about Jones. From everything that I know, he's a very classy guy, everybody loves him and his character because he does not have an ego and he's an extremely hard worker. To put that in perspective, he also plays basketball and averaged 15 points per game last year as the starting Center at Lake Howell. Before football practices, he comes in the open gym to work on his jumpshot for an hour or two and then right after that, he goes straight to football practice. On the football field, in terms of evaluating him, the only flaws that I noticed were that he will sometimes over-pursue and that he's a raw pass rusher but that's not his natural position. He's a MIKE linebacker IMO. Also, I want to note that tonight, he played with a cast on his right hand. It was a rather large cast, went from the midpoint of the forearm to the the knuckles. He re-injured his hand about two minutes into the fourth quarter and left the field.

Well, that is a part of it, to me the larger factor in beating GT boils down to Randy Shannon's ability to impart Discipline in the team and make certain they are prepped for the game.

GT ran a gadget play on FG try, it went for a TD, the GT Wr was out there for all to see and not a single Tiger went out to cover him. GT pressures a team like that all the time.

That was not an easy play for anyone to cover. I count that more to great coaching by GT rather than bad coaching by Clemson.

Teams better be disiplined when they play GT. GT makes it to where everyone must play well not just 1 or 2 people.

I don't understand why teams rush everyone trying to block kicks. Your chances are extremely low to begin with, and you need someone back there in case of a fake. I'd always have at least two guys playing centerfield watching for receivers.

Can someone wake me up on Thursday? Or well tomorrow too cause we get the first Dolphins game.

Hey Alen do you know anything about that cornerback from Wisconsin? Brinkley I think his name is? I watched the Fresno State vs Wisconsin game today and came away pretty impressed with his overall game. He reads routes well, was running stride for stride down the field with receivers and always playing the ball.

He was pretty impressive, but then again it was against Fresno State so it's hard to see how athletic a kid is against somewhat subpar competition.

No, I missed the game. Actually only caught parts of the fourth and over time. I don't have him on my draft eligible and underclassmen list so he's new to me. I'll write him down now, thanks for the name. Niles Brinkley?

The player that impressed me with Wisconsin is their left tackle. Gabe Camiri. He's a good player.

    Yep that's him.

I'm not saying he's neccessarily someone to keep a close eye on, but based upon that one game he was very impressive. Jumped a slant route where the WR kind of got picked by the other defender for an INT. Even though the WR was taken out it was still impressive how he read the route, circled around the pick the offense tried to set and jumped in front.

The was another play a good 40 yards down the field where he ran stride for stride with the receiver and swatted the ball down on the run. It was a well thrown pass too.

He definitely has the football instinct, I just wonder if he has the physical talent since I'd never even heard of him before.

If he makes plays, he could be a sleeper. Most starters in college should be watched IMO because they could be sleepers.

Thanks for bringing him up though, I think there may be a re-run tonight of the game around one or two AM so I might try to catch it and watch him.

EDIT: There's no re-run of Wisconsin tonight. Only UCLA/Tennessee, which is a good one to watch.

Just wanted to pass along that Christian Jones, the high school star I wrote about on Friday, is strongly considering UM right now. The UM coaches are pushing to get him, they really like him and he really likes it there. Many still believe he will be an FSU player but UM will not go away easily.
