Some interesting stuff, nothing we don't really know but it's a slow week til Thursday.

    http://miamiherald.typepad.com/umiami/2009/09/shannon-j-harris-talk-georgia-tech.html

So apparently we practice getting off cut blocks. That is encouraging.

Shannon needs to teach them how to disengage off of blockers.

Also, Adewale Ojomo could be back this year but I highly doubt it. He's lost 30 pounds since getting his jaw broken in two places.

Shannon is a terrible teacher; as a DC and LB Coach he had several players underachieve at the U and then hit the pros as starters their rookie seasons...that tells me he wasn't getting the most from his talented players.

Let's hope he has the right coaches on D now to teach these talented youngsters.

The thing with Ojomo is borderline tragic; did we ever find out who sucker-punched him? That ****er should be charged with assault; I hope at least he was thrown off the team.

Driven to be great, UM receivers make impression on Duper, college football world

Good read on our WR's. I know RS has a lot of haters on this board as well as others and I've been one of them at times but if this group plays to their potential and develop into something special - he HAS to be given credit for selling these kids on coming to the U at a time when our offense was well offensive to watch.

I said in another thread I don't understand the Shannon hate. He is bad with time outs. I understand that. It's hard to watch sometimes.

One thing we need to realize is that he pretty much rebuilt this team from the ground up. We've gotten better every year under him, and yes I think we are much better this season. A lot of these "underacheivers" he isn't getting the most out of aren't his recruits. So far his guys have been great.

I've been critical of him at times but never been guilty of spewing the hate some still do. Your point about him rebuilding the program is one that is often missed and it baffles me. When a program has to be built from the ground up as he had to do it takes 3-5 years. With college rules the way they are - it is the upper classmen who play a huge role during the off season and keep the incoming kids in check. To stay on top of their diets and workouts so they can make improvements and get on the field in the fall. We have not had that. This program was broken and he's done a great job of rebuilding it.

Gotta tell you, I expect better than to be tossed in the pile with the "haters" who contribute nothing but "he sux" posts and possibly some degree of racial prejudice against Shannon.

I always present an argument for what I believe; you can ignore it if that's what you want to do in order to minimize my criticism of Randy Shannon, but that doesn't invalidate why I believe what I believe.

I'm not a "hater;" I will, however, point out what I believe to be fatal flaws in Shannon's coaching and his management style, while at the same time point out that recruiting under him has been closer to what we had under Erickson and Davis, which resulted in three national championships - regardless of those two coach's flaws.

Patience bro, patience. When I mentioned the haters, I can honestly tell you that you were not at the forefront of that group. There are others and my point for mentioning it was not to single anyone out. If we were to have this conversation with you face to face - I'm sure it'd be a constructive one. In the end, we'd probably agree to disagree and that's aways fine by me.

I feel compelled to defend Randy a lot of the time because a LOT of his criticism is just so ridiculous its not even worth mentioning. Yes you do present some valid points but you are the exception and not the norm. Gotta understand that I live in South Florida so I hear this crap everyday. It's why - I'll always say that while I love the school and the program - I hate 95% of it's supporters. You, my friend, are not in that 95%.

I'll stand by the fact that Randy's success at this stage cannot and should not be measured solely by wins and losses. Yes - his performance as a coach at times leaves a lot to be desired. He's growing into the position and there have been pains. It's those that call for his firing that get under my skin the most and I don't recall you ever going that far. No one could have done what Randy has been able to do given the state the program was in. I'll stand by that.

Sometimes I have the feeling that Shannon is making it up as he goes along, meaning that attention to details that Coaches have (or hire people to have) just is not there sometimes.

And I do not think he should be fired, I do think he is coaching for his contract though, the 'Canes have a ton of talented players, the same players that Larry Coker never would have landed, now Shannon has to take that next step past "okay" coach to "capable of winning every week" coach.

And I've watched the Canes since Turner Gill had his two point conversion pass tipped and Miami won their first national title.

I can't call for his firing in good conscience because one, as I mentioned his recruiting has been head and shoulders above Coker's; and two, there really isn't anyone out there, nor has there been in the last couple years, who I see as an improvement.

And no, I don't measure his success in wins or losses - yet. I measure him more on how the team plays under him, how he develops the young men in his charge, and how he manages his coaches.

Thanks for not throwing me in with the "rabble." :wink2:

I believe that Shannon was miscast as a position coach and a DC; he is a guy who needs to delegate to a very high degree. He is far more executive than manager.

In that sense, his staff hires this offseason were good ones, since they are X's and O's guys who complement him well.

The thing is a head coach doesn't have to be an X and O guy. In fact I'd rather he isn't. What happens in the NFL when a young headcoach who is great with X's and O's gets a job? He usually tries to do too much.

I'm not saying Shannon is a great coach, but I don't think it's fair to judge him after just a couple seasons where we have seen progress. If the progress stalls though yes.

Also I didn't mean hate as in....you hate him. I just meant negativity.

Tonight just can't and won't come quick enough. I feel like I've been waiting for this game about seven years now. Last Monday seems so insanely long ago it isn't even funny. I'm going crazy.

Georgia Tech has said that they plan on really pressuring Harris. It should be interesting to see how their pressure goes with his calmness and if he's affected by the hits he takes, which I'm sure will be quite a bit.

I hope they try that. We may not have a so called "stud" receiver, but I'd love to see them blitz all day and leave their suspect corners on the proverbial "island" all game long. We have athletes that can take advantage of 1-1 matchups.

    Bring it.

And Jacory can run well, they may try to pressure the Oline and try to create clean opportunities with stuff like twists and stunts.

I agree to a point. I would hope u guys take advTage of some slants and drag routes. The area where u could kill them is screens. Wr and RB screens could get big yards or even big scores. I would not wanna put too much on Jacory to start. Not That he cant handle it but he is still young and has much better chance if he can get nice start first.

I think if we establish a run game, this game is going to be a winner. It'll draw Morgan Burnett and he'll bite on the PA.

Also, we don't have stud receivers, as you note, but I'll take any of their defensive backs against LaRon Byrd. I don't see them playing the ball in the air as well as Byrd does. Not to mention, his vertical and height advantage would come into play. Travis Benjamin should be very interesting for us. I'd say they would look to get him more involved than last week, just so they can stretch the defense and keep them on their toes. I don't want to be overconfident here but I would be a bit disappointed if Benjamin doesn't have a couple of 20+ yard plays.

Last, one thing that I found very interesting was Jacory Harris' post game comments after the win at Florida State. He stated that Mark Whipple left out a lot of the offense in the FSU game and he basically implied (or at least that's the impression that I got) that the game plan that they put together against FSU was vanilla.

Opening up the offense more vs pressure defense by GT. Should be interesting.

All Jacory has to do is walk onto the field sporting his WAMW face and GTech will be afraid to go after him.

Everything is good Marty. No worries about tonight. I watched GTech against Clemson and was not overly impressed. Our DL has to be very disciplined and I think we will be fine.

Me too. I've read that Cooper had a 2nd-3rd round grade coming into this season. If he continues to show up on kickoffs and runs the ball well like he did against FSU, he could be an early second. He looks different this year IMO. Running with less thinking and more instinct. Last year it was like he thought about what he was going to do prior to every run.
