A friend of Ricky Williams said he has never seen the running back more determined and that Williams speaks of wanting to be one of the NFL's three to five best backs. Bill Parcells, who told Williams he believes in him, has pushed the right buttons, and Williams knows he needs money for his family.

I think Ricky will do fine this year, especially with a much better line then our decent one we had last season.

His problem is not diminishment of skills but recovery time between work, fortunately it was a pectoral muscle he tore last year, not a knee, so he should be in great shape for the opening of TC.

The thing I don't like about it is Ronnie will be second fiddle..again..he was beginning to blossom last year, now we are back to a two back/split carries approach and Ronnie takes a few carries to warm up.

I'd like to hear Ronnie and Ricky's take on who we should draft this year.

Anyone know the status of Ronnie's torn ACL? I could look it up, but I'm lazy like that. But Ricky may be just what Ronnie needs. He will allievate some of the carries, esp early on so Ronnie can heal, and working with Ricky may just help "push Ronnie's buttons" and motivate him to be even better....

We don't even know if Ronnie will be 100% healthy at the beginning of this season. The more determined and focused Ricky is the better off we are going to be now that Chatman is gone!

It didn't take that long for a weed joke to surface.

Anyway, I hope Ricky can take full advantage of this opportunity. He will be in great shape with a full training camp and no suspensions. We all saw what can happen back in 2005 with Ronnie and Ricky. I don't think he can be a top 3-5 running back like he says he thinks he can be, but top 15-20 is acceptable.

I agree, I f we look at it, he was a first round pick, a Hiesman trophy winner and back to back 1300 yd per year rusher... He wull be very good this year when we do well with the line. Look @ what Parcells did with broken down OJ Anderson with the Giants, he was a rejest from the cards... the cards of all teams. Billy made him a 1000 yard rusher and I believe a SB MVP. So Ricky's get's proper motivationa nd likes what he sees, I believe he will truely be successful. It is really the first time in a long time I can be ahppy for our Fins.

A thread maybe a week ago said that Ronnie was running now, but not at full speed from what I could gather.

Ricky is a deluxe back up, he may make Ronnie the back up though.

Either way, we come out better for having him.

I doubt Ronnie will be playing second fiddle. If anything the fiddle will be shared, or Ricky will be playing second.

Not with the knee, the first year back supposedly athletic ability is reduced 33% on average according to the American Journal of Sports medicine.

With that in mind, it is a little disconcerting to think we head into 2008 with Ricky Williams as "The Guy" for at least half the season.

From what I have heard Ronnie is already running and should be okay pretty early on. Obviously he won't be 100% but even so from what I've heard he is pretty far ahead of pace compared to other players with similar injuries.

Then again what I've heard could all be false.

Yeah we all have been burned by the "far ahead on the road to recovery" stuff, C-Pepe last season being a prime example of that happening.

For my .02, until Ronnie is out there trying to cut and taking hits on the knee, we really can't say one way or another...leaving..Ricky as the only healthy ready to start and produce Rb we have.

To start the season I agree. As the season goes on though I believe Ronnie will get back to form, even if not at 100%.

My two cents, Rickys best days are behind him. Maybe he can come in and be an average back for us, but that to me seems like the best case scenario.

I'd agree about RW being only average if he was a typical 31 yr old NFL rb, his case is a bit different, he has stayed in shape, arguably he is in better condition now then he was when Wanny was running him into the dirt, and he never has had a major knee problem.

Most Rb have very little cartilage left when they hit 30 yrs old, RW has not had a knee injury in his career, I can't recall him even having a knee clean up.

What makes that a key about him is Curtis Martin was playing strong and leading the AFC (I think) in rushing when he was 33, the next season his career was over due to a bone on bone knee condition, he just couldn't take the pounding anymore.

Ricky is a stud running back, if he can only stay off the weed. But we all knew that already.

I think the key here is that Ricky will be featured early and often in the season...but most importantly to other teams for trade the following year. Ronnie will get to ease into the season slowly and LBook will get plenty of snaps as a third down back.

That's the optimistic view. Of course pot, injury or further injury could throw it all off track again.

I don't think Ricky will sacrifice his family (the money he needs to make for them) by smoking and getting banned from the league. I guess it's possible but Ricky does strike me as a family orientated guy and I cant really see him smoking when he knows he'd be putting his family out on the street if he does.

just shy from being banned from the league... he has made that sacrifice several times already and put his weed habit first. his situation hasnt changed, hes only playing football now IMO just to support his family, not because he wants to.

but... that being said, i still believe he can be a good asset to us. Ronnie back healthy, and ricky in there we should see a great running game this year.

I really hope he has his head on straight this time and doesnt screw up this chance, because it's probably his last.

I share the same feeling as you here. I really hope Ronnie comes back completely healthy but in reality these things take time. Ronnie and the team have to give this knee time to fully recover. A setback of any sort could be a complete disaster.

Having Ricky being the only healthy rb ready to start and produce scares the hell out of me. I will feel more secure if we grab a running back somewhere in the middle of the draft as an insurance policy and a guy who can solidify a solid running back tandem for the future.

His situation certainly has changed. He's gone from having one strike and having the money to walk away whenever he wanted to, to being on his last possible chance in the league and desperate for his paycheck. BIG CHANGE.

I really hope he turns into the Ricky of old form. If he doesn't well it's not like we are paying him millions of dollars. It's a low risk high reward for us just as long as we don't rely on him alone.

I guess if you look at it that way. But the reality of it is he still had the family to support, just as he does now. Either way, point taken

So who is willing to bet the first 8-10 games and Ricky staying in the NFL's graces on Ricky Williams being at least good for us?

Surprisingly, I am, IMO his back is up against the wall and he knows it so there won't be any trips to india or other claptrap.

Ricky needs to understand that this is probably the last chance, to prove that he can stay out of truble and be a dedicated football player. Ricky and Ronnie in the same backfield can be awesome for us.

    Indeed...

Not to mention the whole league is watching and seeing if, under the watchful eye of Parcells, he can clean up his act.

    Isn't this his contract year?

He should know that if he wants to get paid, even if its just minimum, he needs to show he's got something left in the tank beyond this season.

Good maybe Ricky Williams can get his act together more and become the back he was and with Ronnie Brown and Ricky Williams we should be un stopable in the running game

At this time of year how many stories are there about players being unfit and unmotivated? Everybody is coming back from injurites well with no lingering problems and everybody is motivated to show that they will be productive this year/

Until Ricky shows up on the field at full speed I'll treat this one sceptically.

Yeah really, as if he hasn't screwed over his family, his 20 different baby mama's and 40 children, etc.

I guess we will have him as our backup, but I am not in for taking any carries away from Ronnie Brown. Ronnie Brown is much better than Ricky at this stage, and hell, he's much more talented than Ricky was and more versatile.

Ricky Williams can be our Jesse Chatman [very limited touches], after Cameron finally woke up and gave Ronnie the rock.

I'll just say this. The rest of the league better pray Ricky Williams is not motivated and is over the hill. If he's not............Watch out!

Like KB said though, he's unreliable.

Well, Onestache's offense helped unmotivate Ricky. I think that Ricky can be a great back for us. I'm glad that we have him, with Ronnie having to rehab. Should be nice if Ronnie doesn't have to hurry back

Nice info, good read. Thanks for posting it. Resisting the temptation to dive in on the usual pro-Anti-Ricky banter. Will chime in with one thought: Ricky has had a year to mature and grow up, without much wear or tear on his legs, both are positive signs for us, but we never know with this kid.
